That is not to say we will not be slammed by one last blizzard or two. With Spring comes the opportunity to visit family graves at the cemetery or at the local mausoleum. I encourage you to make a pilgrimage to a loved ones grave this Spring, as soon as the weather allows. Sometimes in my life it strikes me as to how long it has been since I visited my own dad s grave and I will then make a special pilgrimage to the site. I find it comforting to read the different Christian epitaphs that are written by other families on the various tombstones spread throughout the cemetery. There is a consolation that others have suffered to and have kept going. I find solace also in the many persons who were laid to rest in final hope of a day that would never end and in a final place where tears and sorrow would be finally and fully healed. Cemeteries are sobering and yet comforting places. If it has been awhile since you have visited, and you are able, take some time to go. Allow yourself to be confronted with the Good News of Christ s death and resurrection which we celebrate at Easter. How we are buried is an important topic. Some of our loved ones may have been cremated. Cremation is an acceptable practice in the Church. It was forbidden by the Church for a long time because cremation was used as a statement of denial of the Resurrection. This was a problem in the days of the anti- Church French Revolution. Not so much today. It is true that families often times find it more comforting to have a body present at funerals and that the Church prefers having a body present, but it is not required. One of the challenges with loved one s ashes is that they at times are not buried in the ideal Christian manner or even not buried at all. The body is sacred and will rise again, and ashes are sacred too. The Church calls for ashes to be buried in either the blessed ground of a cemetery or in a mausoleum. For one, this avoids desecration and secondly, it provides an often needed place for loved ones to go and pray. The ability to see a person s name, date, and know that something of them is truly there is of great help to persons this side of heaven. The scattering of ashes in forests or on beaches, though understandable, is not an approved practice. Many of us did not know this and we completely understand. If you still have your loved one s ashes, you should probably begin thinking about burying them. Sr. Caroline or I would be very open to helping you pray this over. Not an easy decision to make, but a good one. Contact us at any time or just pull us aside to start the conversation. Continued thanks to all who have prayed over how they may be able to help with our Bishop s Appeal goal. Whether through prayer or financial gift, your support is very appreciated. I have found it helpful to have my own pledge spread out over the year. This makes it easier to budget and to fit in with other expenses. Whatever you prayerfully decide is the best way to support the Bishop s Appeal know that we are grateful. Thank you for helping St. Bernard advance! Fr. Mark Vander Steeg
