ANNOUNCEMENTS (Contact Andrea with questions or to help out.) Vigil Mass Little Disciples (5:00pm on Saturdays) ON HOLD Parents, please volunteer once a month to teach with Andrea. The Next Date For: First Communion Preparation: Monday, March 12 Disciples Club: Wednesday, March 14, Youth Group: Wednesday, March 14 RCIA adapted for children & teens: Saturday, March 17 Little Disciples: Saturday March 17 (Vigil Mass) & Sunday, March 18 (10:00 am) Confirmation Preparation: Monday, March 12 Baptism Preparation for Parents & Godparents: Saturday, April 14 OLD TESTAMENT JOSHUA SAYS GOODBYE Joshua chapters 23 & 24 Joshua was chosen by God to replace Moses who had led the people out of Israel. At the end of his life, Joshua reminded the people of their sacred Covenant. A Covenant is an agreement between a very powerful person and the people he rules. The Covenant between God and the Israelites promised blessings and peace if they would follow the Law summed up in the Ten Commandments. The Israelites had settled in a land close to the Jordan River, dividing the land among 12 tribes who descended from the sons of Jacob. Joshua reminded them of God s blessings and they promised to be faithful. Joshua set up a large stone near an oak tree and called on the stone (that was the custom) to be a witness to these promises. NEW TESTAMENT LEVI (MATTHEW) STARTS A NEW LIFE Mark 2: 1-12 Tax collectors were not popular during Bible times. They collected a tax that belonged to the occupying country Rome. Many tax collectors (Zacchaeus is a good example) after they sent the required amount to Rome, kept far more than they should have for themselves. The people knew that tax collectors were getting rich by selfishly over-charging everyone. Levi, or Matthew, was one of these tax collectors, until one day he changed his way of life. Jesus walked by the tax collector s post and said to him, Follow me. At once Levi left everything to follow Jesus. Many times Jesus ate at Levi s house. He ate with sinners who were in need of God s love, as we all are. Tradition tells us that Matthew carried the Gospel to Ethiopia in Africa. LEARNING ABOUT OUR FAITH Freedom and Conscience Remember Jiminy Cricket? He was told by Geppetto the old puppet maker to follow Pinocchio the little wooden puppet wherever he went to help him know right from wrong. At first Pinocchio wouldn t listen to him and got into all kinds of trouble. We each have a conscience, a little voice from God that says yes or no to the things we want to do. We are free to listen or not listen. Let s choose to listen! Kids Alphabet Soup B is for Bartholomew, one of Jesus 12 disciples. B is for Baal, one of the Canaanite gods. Prophets told the Israelites to stay away from Baal worship and come back to the One True God. PAGE 4

UPDATE FROM FR. ROGER O BRIEN You ve been kindly praying for my health. Thank you very much. I want you to know that blood tests were taken Feb. 27 at Swedish Hospital in Edmonds. I m pleased with the results for the CRP test, which registers presence of e coli in my pelvic bone. The rating had been at 8 and now (three weeks into a six-week daily treatment of antibiotic infusions) the rating is 0.57, the standard range being 0.00-0.50. It s moving in the right direction. Please join me in prayers of thanksgiving. This makes the daily trips to the hospital worthwhile. It means for the first time since my July 2017 major surgery, a treatment appears to be working. If it holds, it also means we can proceed with my much needed left hip replacement. (cautiously break out the champagne!) ST. BRENDAN CATHOLIC SCHOOL PAGE 6

BULLETIN DEADLINE 12 Noon Monday (Friday 4:30 pm when Monday is a Holiday) Lenten Stewardship Prayer God of mercy, You have given us this special time to reflect on our lives, embrace the Good News and draw closer to You. During this season of Lent, help us use this time to fast and pray, be more generous and show others how to live in Christ. Let us see each day of this season as a new opportunity to renew our lives and gain a deeper appreciation of Your active presence in our hearts and our community of faith. Give us the grace to see Your face in others, especially the poor and those who suffer. And through your Spirit, enkindle in us the fire of Your love so that we may be better stewards of Your redeeming work in the Archdiocese of Seattle, St. Brendan Church, and throughout the world. We ask this through Jesus, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen PAGE 7
