September 2017 Newsletter A Call to Serve In this Issue This month we are committing ourselves to look at how we can serve Christ in the world by praying discerning the way we can use our time and talent. You would have received in the mail a brochure of the many ministries available to choose which way you can use your time and talent for the coming year. I decided to do time and talent separate from treasure because I wanted to emphasize the importance of service as a disciple of Christ. With all the things you are involved in your life, I hope you can start putting time and talent to use by being Christ to the world by your faith. Don t get me wrong, the other things you may be involved in besides the ministries here at St. Louis de Monfort can also be an extension of Christ s presence in the world by your faith. So, take some time to discern your involvement and call to serve Christ in the world in next couple of weeks. Before I sign off, I want to welcome our new Youth Minister, Dave Neeson and family to our parish family and pray they will grow in faith here with all of us. Say Hi to Dave and family. - Fr. 3 RESPECT LIFE MONTH Did you know Indiana's largest abortion facility is located less than 15 miles from St. Louis de Montfort? The Planned Parenthood at 86th and Georgetown Road is responsible for over half of the abortions performed in Indiana and more than 3000 babies died and their mom's lives changed forever there last year alone. Are you ready to stand up for life? How can you make a difference? The international 40 days for life campaign is peaceful, prayerful, and effective. We pray for mothers and their babies, as well as those who have been emotionally or physically harmed by previous abortions and those who are working at the facility. The 10th annual campaign will take place again this year at this Indianapolis Planned Parenthood, from September 27 through November 5, with Vigil hours from 7 AM to 7 PM each day. St. Louis de Montfort is responsible for covering the hours from 7 AM to 11 AM on Thursdays throughout the campaign. Individuals and families interested in participating may register online at www.40daysindy.org. The Kick-off rally will be Tuesday, Sept, 26 at 6:30 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist, Indianapolis. Father Rick Nagel is the keynote speaker who will inspire us as we begin anew! The Midway Point Day of Fasting will be held on Monday, Oct. 16th. Come celebrate lives saved and hearts changed at the Closing Ceremony, Sunday, Nov. 5th at 5pm at St. John the Evangelist. We welcome Emmy Award winner Ryan Bomberger, founder of The Radiance Foundation, an amazing and inspirational speaker. Here are some clips from a few of his previous talks: http://www.theradiancefoundation.org/portfolio-posts/ryan-bomberger-speaking-compilation/ If you have participated in the past, please invite a friend to join you at the vigil. The best way to spread the message of the hope and power of 40 Days is through a personal witness. Share your story of the power of prayer. If you have not participated before and are interested in going for the first time with an experienced person, please contact Rosie Zatkulak at 317-294-5553 or rzatkulak@sbcglobal.net. Fishers Life Chain - Life Chain event is scheduled for Sunday, Oct 1st from 2:30 3:30 pm across the USA - Park in the Farmers Bank parking lot on 116th just west of Allisonville Road - Hold provided POSITIVE signs in prayerful support for the sacredness of all life from womb to tomb - Wonderful event for the entire family - One hour of quality time together! - SLDM is the closest parish to the event - please come out to pray in thanksgiving for the gift of LIFE Chili Supper and Speaker Bring your family and friends to our annual event on Saturday, October 14 at 6 PM (following Mass) in the Youth Ministry Center. How many times have we thought that? We put on a face that says we're OK, but in reality we are a mess. What if life could be lived differently? This talk offers that hope. No one is perfect, and there is a God who sees that we are not OK and wants to be with us anyway. Break through the barriers, face your insecurities, and find true peace. Chris Padgett is a popular speaker, musician and author. He has been married to his high school sweetheart for over 20 years and has nine children. He has appeared on television and radio and has been a regular speaker and entertainer at Steubenville youth conferences. Chris is funny, engaging, and has a real life message to share. The event is free and open to all. Bring friends!

9 Prayer to St. Michael By Jeff Oelker A few people have asked me why we say the prayer to St. Michael at the end of Mass. The following is taken from the website entitled, Michael, for the triumph of the Immaculate. Exactly 33 years to the day prior to the great Miracle of the Sun in Fatima, that is, on October 13, 1884, Pope Leo XIII had a remarkable vision. When the aged Pontiff had finished celebrating Mass in his private Vatican Chapel, attended by a few Cardinals and members of the Vatican staff, he suddenly stopped at the foot of the altar. He stood there for about 10 minutes, as if in a trance, his face ashen white. Then, going immediately from the Chapel to his office, he composed the above prayer to St. Michael, with instructions it be said after all Low Masses everywhere. When asked what had happened, he explained that, as he was about to leave the foot of the altar, he suddenly heard voices - two voices, one kind and gentle, the other guttural and harsh. They seemed to come from near the tabernacle. As he listened, he heard the following conversation: The guttural voice, the voice of Satan in his pride, boasted to Our Lord: "I can destroy your Church." The gentle voice of Our Lord: "You can? Then go ahead and do so." Satan: "To do so, I need more time and more power." Our Lord: "How much time? How much power? Satan: "75 to 100 years, and a greater power over those who will give themselves over to my service." Our Lord: "You have the time, you will have the power. Do with them what you will." In 1886, Pope Leo XIII decreed that this prayer to St. Michael be said at the end of "low" Mass (not "high", or sung Masses) throughout the universal Church, along with the Salve Regina (Hail, Holy Queen); and the practice of the congregation praying these prayers at the end of Mass continued until about 1970, with the introduction of the new rite of the Mass. John Paul II and St. Michael However, at the end of his Angelus message given in St. Peter s Square, Sunday, April 24, 1994, Pope John Paul II urged Catholics to recite this prayer to Saint Michael once again: "The prayer can fortify us for that spiritual battle about which the Letter to the Ephesians speaks [of]: "Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power."(ephesians 6:10). And to this same battle that the Book of the Apocalypse refers [to], recalling in front of our eyes the image of St. Michael the Archangel (cf. Revelations 12:7). Surely, this scene was very present to Pope Leon XIII, when, at the end of the previous century, he introduced to the entire Church a special prayer to St. Michael: St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil "Even if today this prayer is no longer recited at the end of the Eucharistic celebration, I invite all to not forget it, but to recite it in order to obtain help in the battle against the forces of darkness and the spirit of this world." This year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the miracle of the sun at Fatima (October 13, 2017). It is a wonderful time to start praying the daily rosary as requested by our Blessed Mother at Fatima.

11 Prayers for the Priests and Seminarians in the Diocese The Serra Club in Lafayette manages a prayer list for all the priests and seminarians in the diocese. Recently, they decided to add the men in formation for the permanent diaconate. For each day of the month, one of our priests and a seminarian is listed. Prayers are requested for those listed, on those days. The thinking is that, of course, supporting these men in prayer is always good, and it also raises some awareness. We would like to give St. Louis de Montfort parishioners the opportunity to pray for the priests and seminarians, too. SEPTEMBER 2017 Month of the Holy Angels Gracious God, grant us holy ministers of Your altar, who are careful and fervent guardians of the Eucharist.
