From Father Justin Lopina, Associate Pastor Wow. So here we are: the inal weekend before The Big Associate Pastor Changeover. The weekend of inal goodbyes. Here s the funny thing: I ve never really believed in goodbyes. When in grade school, a family member once told me that friendships are meant to end, and that lifelong friendship isn t a realistic thing. I didn t buy it. To be sure, there are plenty of old colleagues and friends that are no longer part of my life. However, I still keep ties with some of my very oldest friends from those early years of life. I also have a standing policy with my friends that I will visit if I m one state or country away: I once crossed the border from the Dominican Republic to Haiti (all on my own, not smart) to pay a visit to someone I knew in Peace Corps. Those two days were a harrowing adventure of culture shock: it is not easy to get out of Haiti, not even for an American. There are other examples of goodbye refusal, of course. This is a lifelong pattern, after all. But after dwelling upon this aspect of my personality, a spiritual lesson came to the forefront of my thoughts and prayers. In some book or article I read many years ago, a theologian was explaining the wholeness of the human person. You see, it is the teaching of the Catholic Church that all people are self-contained wholes, and we should beware of ixating on one singular part of Readings for the Week of June 17, 2018 Sun: Mon: Tues: Ez 17:22-24/Ps 92:2-3, 13-14, 15-16 [cf. 2a]/ 2 Cor 5:6-10/Mk 4:26-34 1 Kgs 21:1-16/Ps 5:2-3ab, 4b-6a, 6b-7 [2b]/ Mt 5:38-42 1 Kgs 21:17-29/Ps 51:3-4, 5-6ab, 11 and 16 [3a]/ Mt 5:43-48 Wed: 2 Kgs 2:1, 6-14/Ps 31:20, 21, 24 [25]/Mt 6:1-6, 16-18 Thurs: Sir 48:1-14/Ps 97:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7 [12a]/Mt 6:7-15 Fri: 2 Kgs 11:1-4, 9-18, 20/Ps 132:11, 12, 13-14, 17-18 [13]/Mt 6:19-23 Sat: 2 Chr 24:17-25/Ps 89:4-5, 29-30, 31-32, 33-34 [29a]/Mt 6:24-34 Sun: Is 49:1-6/Ps 139:1-3, 13-14, 14-15 [14a]/ Acts 13:22-26/Lk 1:57-66, 80 being human. For instance, we are all biological beings. It is good to understand and respect the biological aspect of humanity: that includes brain science and body chemistry and basic nutrition. However, we are not merely biological: we are spiritual beings as well. What we think and feel are not the mere products of ired neurons or hormonal chemical reactions - those are parts of a greater whole. To fail to recognize that is to fail to see humanity for the unique creation that it is. Getting back to the topic of goodbyes, this same writer speci ically made mention of the fact that we are eternal beings paradoxically bound by time. That means that we grow old and change, because the clock is always ticking for us. Is not the difference between past, present, and future is perfectly clear? Such is the reality of time. However, just as we are not entirely de ined by biology, we are not entirely bound by time. We have, in fact, an eternal nature as well. We sense that element of eternity most especially when we say goodbye to loved ones - whether due to death or major life changes. We feel a tug, somewhere within us, that reminds us that inal goodbyes are as temporary and limited as sin itself. We know deep down that we re not meant to be apart for long. So know that if we do not meet again in the near future, we will meet again in the Kingdom of Heaven. The unity of faith and good will is what draws us together no matter the circumstances. And the grace of The Holy Spirit encourages nothing less of us all. (From page 2) So thank you for the last two years. There was much joy, learning, and growth throughout everything. I sincerely hope our paths cross sooner rather than later... but if they don t, we will see each other again. For as we hear in Eucharistic Prayer III, give kind admittance to your kingdom where we will enjoy for ever the fullness of your glory, when you will wipe away every tear from our eyes. For seeing you, our God, as you are, we shall be like you for all ages and praise you without end, through Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on the world all that is good. Farewell for now, everyone. Wherever we go and whatever we do, may God bless us all: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Human Concerns Saint Vincent de Paul Society In the Gospel, Jesus says: This is how it is with the reign of God. A man scatters seed on the ground. He goes to bed and gets up day after day. Through it all the seed sprouts and grows without his knowing how it happens. Through your almsgiving you are sowing seeds that grow far greater than you know. Your gift placed in the St. Vincent de Paul poor box brings Christ s love and compassion to the poor.
