Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany John Chrysostom Window January 29, 2017 8:15 and 10:50 a.m. PRE-SERVICE MUSIC....................................................Carla Barrows WORDS OF WELCOME...................................................... Kim Davis PROCESSIONAL HYMN... Songs of Thankfulness and Praise....LSB 394 Songs of thankfulness and praise, Jesus, Lord, to Thee we raise, Manifested by the star To the sages from afar, Branch of royal David s stem In Thy birth at Bethlehem: Anthems be to Thee addressed, God in man made manifest. Manifest at Jordan s stream, Prophet, Priest, and King supreme; And at Cana wedding guest In Thy God-head manifest; Manifest in pow r divine, Changing water into wine; Anthems be to Thee addressed, God in man made manifest. Manifest in making whole Palsied limbs and fainting soul; Manifest in valiant fight, Quelling all the devil s might; Manifest in gracious will, Ever bringing good from ill; Anthems be to Thee addressed, God in man made manifest. Sun and moon shall darkened be, Stars shall fall, the heav ns shall flee; Christ will then like lightning shine, All will see His glorious sign; All will then the trumpet hear, All will see the Judge appear; Thou by all wilt be confessed, God in man made manifest. Grant us grace to see Thee, Lord, Present in Thy holy Word Grace to imitate Thee now And be pure, as pure art Thou; That we might become like Thee At Thy great epiphany And may praise Thee, ever blest, God in man made manifest. Public Domain INVOCATION P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. CONFESSION P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. ABSOLUTION P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. HYMN OF PRAISE.... We Sing for All the Unsung Saints....LSB 678 We sing for all the unsung saints, That countless, nameless throng, Who kept the faith and passed it on With hope steadfast and strong Through all the daily griefs and joys No chronicles record, Forgetful of their lack of fame, But mindful of their Lord. Though uninscribed with date or place, With title, rank, or name, As living stones their stories join To form a hallowed frame Around the myst ry in their midst: The Lamb once sacrificed, The Love that wrested life from death, The wounded, risen Christ. So we take heart from unknown saints Bereft of earthly fame, Those faithful ones who have received A more enduring name: For they reveal true blessing comes When we our pride efface And offer back our lives to be The vessels of God s grace. COLLLECT OF THE DAY P Almighty God, You know we live in the midst of so many dangers that in our frailty we cannot stand upright. Grant strength and protection to support us in all dangers and carry us through all temptations; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
OLD TESTAMENT..................................................... Jeremiah 1:4-10 R The Old Testament Reading is from the 1 st Chapter of Jeremiah. R 4 Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. 6 Then I said, Ah, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth. 7 But the Lord said to me, Do not say, I am only a youth ; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the Lord. 9 Then the Lord put out His hand and touched my mouth. And the Lord said to me, Behold, I have put My words in your mouth. 10 See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to break down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant. R This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. EPISTLE..........................Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-13 R The Epistle Reading is from the 4 th Chapter of Ephesians. R 1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ s gift. 11 And He gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. R This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA AND VERSE....................................................... LSB 173 C Alleluia. Lord, for whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL........................................................ Luke 21:12-18 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 21 st Chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. P [Jesus said:] 12 But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for My name s sake. 13 This will be your opportunity to bear witness. 14 Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer, 15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. 16 You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. 17 You will be hated by all for My name s sake. 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ.
CONFESSION OF FAITH.................................................. Nicene Creed C I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen.
