Lesson 1 June 3, 2018 Primary Learner s Manual Jacob s Lies Jacob Lied, Esau Cried Genesis 27 Esau, my son, Isaac called. The blind old man could not see his older son. Here I am, Father, Esau said. I am old, Isaac said, and do not know when I may die. I want you to take your bow and go hunting. Get me a deer! Cook some of that delicious meat I love. Bring it to me to eat. I want to give you my blessing before I die. Esau left at once, but he was not the only one who heard Isaac s words. Rebekah, Esau s mother, overheard. She wanted her favorite son, Jacob, to get that special blessing. Before their birth, God had told Rebekah the younger twin, Jacob, would rule over the older one, Esau. She was afraid Isaac would veto God s plan. She decided to do something. Jacob, we have to act quickly, she might have said to him. Go, kill two young goats and dress them for me to cook for your father. You can take the meat to him and get the blessing before your brother returns from the hunt. She put the goat skins over Jacob s smooth neck and arms so Isaac would think it was the hairy skin of Esau in case he touched Jacob. She dressed Jacob in Esau s clothes so he smelled of the outdoors like Esau. Jacob took the meat and bread to Isaac and claimed to be Esau. Isaac was surprised that his son was back with deer meat so quickly. But when he touched the hairy skin, he thought it must be Esau after all. He ate the food and had his son come close so that he could kiss him. He could smell Esau s clothes that Jacob wore. Jacob convinced his father that he really was Esau. Isaac blessed Jacob and asked God to give him prosperity and make him a powerful ruler over his brother. Esau came in right after Jacob left. Isaac trembled all over when he realized he had blessed someone else. Your brother deceived me. He received your blessing, and I cannot take it back. Esau cried out bitterly for Isaac to bless him. He hated Jacob so much that he planned to kill him. Rebekah sent Jacob far away to live with her brother until Esau got over his anger. 3

Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men. 2 Corinthians 8:21 Trace the words with a marker or crayon. In the sight of the Lord... Honesty Checklist In the sight of men... I know that God knows everything. Psalm 139:1, 4, 23, 24 I confess my sins and ask His forgiveness rather than trying to hide them from Him. Proverbs 28:13; 1 John 1:9 I will keep my conscience clear by always being honest. Romans 2:15 I know Jesus is truth, and it pleases Him to see me honest. John 14:6; 17:3 I will honestly share with my parents when someone asks me to promise not to tell them something. 3 John 4 I know that dishonesty hurts the one who lies and others. Romans 12:17 I choose honesty as a character trait for my life. John 8:32 Exaggeration stretching the truth is a form of dishonesty. I will earn others trust by telling only the truth. Ephesians 4:25 Lesson 1 5

Speaking the truth in love. Ephesians 4:15 God s Word commands us to speak the truth in love. What is your motive for sharing the truth you hear? Love means that you care about the well-being of others. You feel more concern about how it affects others than in being able to share information that amounts to gossip. We should not repeat information that might hurt another even if the facts are true. It may not be appropriate for you to tell what or all you know. Combine love and mercy with truth. If there is a question about whether or not you should tell something, ask yourself: Would I want someone else telling this about me even if it is true? Connect the correct meaning to each of the wrong values promoted by Satan. to get something by tricking or acting dishonestly. representing as true what one knows to be false. a false statement or action with the intent to deceive. to take what belongs to another dishonestly or without permission. 6 Lesson 1
