CONNECTIONS from your Pastor s Heart Epic Endurance: The Testimony of Camp Hughes A few weeks ago, I shouldered the sad responsibility of meeting with Todd, Amanda and Amelia Hughes to talk about the life and death of little Camp. Amanda beautifully summarized his nine years by saying, Camp oozed the love of Jesus. In January of 2008, Todd and Amanda joyfully discovered they were expecting a son, but the doctor gave a dark warning. He said there were significant abnormalities detected and he did not feel the baby would survive. So even in the womb, Camp our Champ, started fighting for his life. When Camp arrived on August 19, 2008, his first breath revealed pulmonary stenosis and his brave heart contained a murmur. He went straight to the NICU where he picked up spinal meningitis. Courageous Camp battled back and made his way home and into the hearts of his family and countless others. For the next four years, it was relatively smooth sailing as his mom observed: Camp had a sweet spirit, a feisty attitude, topped with a head full of curly brown hair and giant eyes. He was everyone s favorite. January of 2014 brought the dark diagnosis that Camp was battling a wicked cancer called neuroblastoma. During the next four and a half years, he would spend nearly 1,000 days at Children s Hospital fighting fierce battles. Camp developed epic endurance. With an attitude of trusting God, accompanied by his amazing family, he fought all the enemies. On June 4, 2018, the Lord called home our radiant and resilient young hero. I received the news in China and immediately pictured Jesus the Good Shepherd, tenderly holding His precious little lamb named Camp. His mission was accomplished and his days were fulfilled. Camp s medical team affirmed that he defied all the odds. His primary doctor said, I m a better physician and person because I ve known Camp. One of his nurses shared, I am heartbroken, but rejoicing because Camp is with our Savior. Camp was the sweetest, strongest, silliest little boy that I ve ever known. He is an enduring legend at Children s Hospital. Here s what Camp taught us. 1. Trust God and keep fighting. He personified courage, faith and love. Like Amanda said, he oozed the love of Jesus. 2. He taught us to pray. If prayer was water, a Niagara Falls has fallen over Camp and the Hughes Family. Praying for Camp has drawn us closer to the Lord and to each other. 3. Camp s nine years reminds us that life is a temporary gift. Your life is on loan from the Lord. Receive it with gratitude and use it to honor King Jesus and to serve His purpose. One day, I hope someone will add up my life and say Jay oozed the love of Jesus, and that will be enough!
