News of Grave Interest HERITAGE SUNDAY MAY 19, 2013. MARK YOUR CALENDAR! You do not want to miss this. The Historians/Cemetery Committee is planning a special program to celebrate our churches early heritage. The program will focus on the Tabernacle community in the 1800 s. That was a period when transportation was limited, children walked to school and rural life was centered on the church and the schoolhouse. In the Methodist Church Heritage Sunday is celebrated on Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost is the day the Holy Spirit was given to the church. Just as we celebrate the birth of the church on this day, we will celebrate the birth of Tabernacle and the community. The program will include photographs of the old schoolhouse, old church buildings, the cemetery at Bethlehem Lutheran Evangelical Church, old deeds and plats, and much more. We are searching for old photographs and items. We hope you will go through your old belongings and share items with us. WE WILL RETURN ALL ITEMS. We will scan the pictures in your presence and give them back to you immediately. We plan to have a display of old items. The displayed items will be returned to you after the program. The children will have parts in the program. If any child would like to dress in vintage-type clothing (overhauls, straw hats, etc.) we encourage them to do so. The adults are invited to dress in vintagetype clothing too. Attire does not have to be from the 1800 s. Use your imagination. Old hats, shawls, dresses, pocketbooks, trousers, etc. I ve heard someone say he will carry the old hoe he used in his youth. His identity is a surprise. Be sure to look for him! We hope you will join in the fun. The program will be held during the regular worship hour. A covered dish dinner in the Social Hall will follow. If you would like to bring a vintage dish from the old days the Tabernacle Cookbooks with the red and green binders contain recipes from the early church years. If you plan to bring an old family recipe let us know and we will prepare a card to be placed with the dish. Bring a well-filled picnic basket and join in the fun. Invite your family, friends, and former church members. Let s fill the church. If you have items to share or questions, please contact one of us. Crime Watch Karen Flynn 285-8198 Maxie Riner 286-6311 Glenn Watts 285-0658 The area Crime Watch Group will meet at 7pm on Tuesday, April 23, at Tabernacle UMC. Freeman GOOD YEARS === Our March meeting of the Good Years group was held at Olive Garden in Monroe. We only had eight (8 yes, that s right) members there. But I m sure all of you realize that when Good Years members miss that meal, it s usually because of a Doctor s appointment. And at our age, those are not things we can avoid. Olive Garden is always a good choice and those of us who could not be there missed some good food. Spring is coming eventually, and with better weather perhaps our attendance will get back to normal. Our hostess for April is Lynda Deese. We will be going back to one of our favorite places which we have not visited in some time. Good Years will meet on April 11, at 11:30 am at the Brown Derby in Monroe. Come join us, bring a friend and enjoy a good meal. === Dear Tabernacle Church Family, Thank you all so much for your love and prayers. The food, the help with the boys, the phone calls and emails were all so appreciated. I cannot express how much you all mean to me and always have. I am truly blessed to be a part of this amazing church family. Love, Elizabeth & boys Special Gift Tabernacle has received a new communion table cover, given in honor of Mrs. Hellen Harbison- Estridge. This new cloth will be used during our Maundy Thursday service. UMW We had a wonderful First Quarter UMW meeting at the home of Suzan Courtney. There were eleven (11) ladies present, including Heather s mother, Jean Bridges. Jodie Plyler presented a wonderful program on the UMW Reading Program, of which I would like to give you some information. Every year, the Women s Division of the United Methodist Church recommends a wide range of books in various categories, levels of difficulty, for different age groups (Children s, Youth, Adult) and interests some light reading, some more serious. There are various Plans, which would get us recognition through the South Carolina Conference, the first starting at only 5 books a year. Jodie has already purchased one book; if a couple of us purchase other books, we will have a small Library to share. I know we have many readers at Tabernacle. Surely, we could read 5 books in the calendar year. If you want to know more, contact Jodie, Suzan or myself. If you can go online, go to http://gbgmumc.org/umw/programs/readingprograms/ for even more information. Do you remember when we used to have the Day Apart Service here for our UMW members? Those used to be really special programs for us. Partly because of our small attendance, we no longer have those services. However, on a District level, those programs continue to be held and enrich lives. This year, the meeting is at Wesley UMC York on April 20. While I don t expect any of you to commit to going, we can still take part. The program this year will center around the Wallace Family Life Center. We are asked to help by furnishing any of the following to help this wonderful ministry: postal stamps, cleaning supplies, softballs, hulahoops, or gift cards (like Wal-Mart). I d like to designate April 13 as our day to bring any of those kinds of things to the Social Hall. We can then make sure they get into the hands of people who will be attending the Day Apart Service and will feel we are still a contributing part of the South Carolina UMW. Thank you in advance ladies. You always make me proud.
Happy Easter, Tabernacle!! We hope this message finds you well or at least on the mend. On a personal note on the "mend" part, my family and I would like to thank all of you so much for your kindness and prayers since Mom's accident. In 2011, your love sustained us through all the losses we experienced, and through Mom's hospital stay, and long road of rehab we know is ahead, once again, Tabernacle's love has risen to the top to get us through a difficult time. Mom has spent her entire life giving of herself and putting others first, so as you can imagine, this is a tough time for her to be taken care of in turn, and while we can never, ever care for her as well as she cared for us, we are certainly trying to repay the countless acts of love she has shown us all. I mentioned to some that her broken shoulder had carried us, and provided a solid foundation to lean on through our whole lives, so it's fitting that now our "Woman of Steel" has a "Bionic Shoulder" that will make her as strong as ever. We ask for more prayers and positive thoughts be sent her way, and know she sends her love to you all, and misses her church and her "extended family" more than words can express. What a glorious time it will be to see her back at church, with that twinkle we've all come to know for generations. The kindness and cards from her "children" in our children's department gave her an extra "boost," and as true teachers do, she can't wait to be back teaching and being with her children! Now, as for our Men's Club, we of course have our annual Easter Sunrise Service Breakfast coming up this Sunday morning! Thanks again SO much to those who volunteered to donate food items, and we hope our entire membership will come inside and enjoy a full breakfast prepared by our men. We all know Tabernacle's women can cook as well as anyone, anywhere, but our men have proven to be able to whip up some great food as well, right??? Donations are greatly appreciated, as we always turn around and use money raised to help the needy in our community. The breakfast will take the place of any meetings in April, so our next meeting will be held Tuesday, May 14th at 7pm. Gary has agreed to provide the food for that night, so we appreciate his willingness to bring some much anticipated food to our Fellowship meeting. Last month, I mentioned how long we've had a charter at Tabernacle with our Men's Club, and how "once upon a time," every man in our church membership faithfully attended meetings. I want to issue that challenge again, as you now have until this Sunday morning when we cook breakfast, or at the most, until Tuesday, May 14th at 7pm to make room on your social calendar for us. We hope to see you Sunday morning, and if not, on Tuesday, May 14th, at 7pm!! Blest Be THE Tie That Binds... John Something greater As long as we live, our self-absorption and our insecurity will walk together, holding hands and swinging them back and forth like two little girls on their way to a pretend playground they can never find. Human nature dictates that most often we will be as insecure as we are self-absorbed. The best possible way to keep from getting sucked into the superficial narcissistic mentality that money, possessions and sensuality can satisfy and secure us is to deliberately give ourselves to something much greater... [Christ] showed us that giving, rather than getting, is the means to receiving.... To find yourself, your true self, you must lose yourself in something larger. EPWORTH CHILDREN S HOME Mother s Day Offering, May 12, 2013 WE MAKE THEM DIFFERENT Across the country, residential facilities like Epworth Children s Home are struggling to meet the needs of the children they serve. Others are closing their doors and changing their mission just to survive. A great deal has changed in our country in regards to child protection and Epworth is not immune to the changes. While Epworth feels the ever-changing tide rolling in, they have not had to falter from their mission to serve children, youth and families through a caring, accepting and safe Christian community, where hurts are healed; hope is nurtured; and faith in God, self and others in developed. The reason Epworth is able to stand strong, is because WE the United Methodist Church of SC stand with them. Through our support Epworth is able to welcome children regardless of the government s or the family s ability to pay for the child s care. The care they offer goes above and beyond the basics of food and shelter. Epworth offers tutoring, counseling, spiritual formation, quality health care and fun activities for the children. As Epworth answers the call to break the cycle of abuse, neglect and shame, they individualize the care they provide to each child to give him or her the best opportunity to succeed in their next life transition. On Sunday, May 12, 2013, our congregation will stand with Epworth to break the cycle of abuse, neglect and shame through our collection of the Annual Epworth Mother s Day Offering. We invite you to give generously to the children who call Epworth home. For more information, please visit Epworth on the web at www.epworthchildrenshome.org.
