From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, My Silver Jubilee Celebration: Thank You is the uppermost feeling in my mind and heart for how beautifully this celebration went. The Archbishop celebrated the Thanksgiving Mass at which he preached an inspiring homily. After the Mass, he was kind enough to bless the Fountain and the Legacy Courtyard. Then the Archbishop joined and stayed for the entire reception in the Parish Center, which shows how much he values our parish. I m deeply grateful to him for being so generous with his time for us. It was a joy to have the concelebrating priests. Some of my friends were delighted with the quality of our liturgy and our parish life. At the reception, Gene Mullin spoke and presented a Certificate of Recognition from California State Assembly signed by Kevin Mullin, Assembly Member from our District 22. Rich Garbarino, Vice Mayor, spoke and presented a Proclamation from the City Council of SSF. He declared last Sunday Father Charles Puthota Day in South San Francisco! That s a first for me and probably the last in my life. Ron Derenzi also spoke. Archbishop made some appreciative comments. I owe my deep gratitude to these speakers. My sister Josephine and brother Abraham spoke from the family treasure trove of memories. Present were also my younger brother John whose wedding I blessed twenty-five years ago at my Ordination and my sister-in-law (Abraham s wife) Vimala. They showed an 8-minute video about me. Our principal Kathy Lucchesi made a heartwarming presentation through some school children and presented messages from all the classes of our school and a tile. I spoke at the end thanking everyone and expressing how much I love and treasure the Church---and the call of Christ and the mission given to me by God. I want to thank Karen Guglielmoni for doing an excellent job of organizing all the details of the Mass and reception. I m proud to have her working for our parish. Her flexibility, efficiency, great spirit, friendliness, helpful nature, and faith combined together make her a treasure in our parish office. I also express my deep gratitude to Joe and Carmella da San Martino and their dedicated hospitality committee for providing an excellent lunch to the guests. For all the assistance Patti Spiteri gave, I m grateful. Impressed! Everyone who attended the event, especially those who came from other parishes, and the Archbishop and priests, went away with a very good impression about our parish. I have been getting emails from some people praising our parish and the event last Sunday. I thank you all for keeping our parish flag flying high. 25 years of my priesthood have been good and filled with blessings. Please keep me in your prayers as I continue my priestly journey for service of God and people. Any leadership is hard, but a leadership at the heart of spiritual and pastoral ministry is much harder. I need your help so I can carry out God s work entrusted to me. Capital Campaign Update: As we continue Phase 2 of the repavement and beautification project and are about to bring it to a close soon, I am in awe of what we have been able to do so far. May I proudly continue to present to you the updates coming from Terri Ciardella: Congratulations to Father Charles on his 25 years as a priest! It was a wonderful celebration. At Father Charles' request, Archbishop Cordileone honored us all by blessing the Fountain, Cross & Legacy Courtyard... it was the perfect culmination of our community coming together and successfully achieving Phase 2 of the project. Lighting: We are in the process of reviewing all outdoor light sources and plan to have them synchronized on timers so that the parish and school grounds will be adequately lit when necessary. Fountain: The two legacy benches are in place with beautiful bible verses to be enjoyed for years to come. Planters have been ordered and will be added to enhance the courtyard area as well as serve as a deterrent for automobiles between the church and the fountain at that time, we will be able to remove the current barricades. Legacy Courtyard: The concrete is scheduled to be power washed and sealed in time for the Festival. EXCITING NEWS!!!!!: Did you or someone you know miss out on the opportunity to be in the legacy courtyard by purchasing a brick or tile? If so, you are in LUCK! We have a few blank bricks that we can remove and replace with personalized ones. And we have room on the granite tile wall to add a limited number of granite tiles. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD that we are going to take orders throughout the Festival Weekend. At that time, you will need to order, confirm and pay for your legacy item. Order forms will be available in the Pastoral Center office, School office, in the vestibule and on the St Veronica website. This will give you the opportunity to decide what size item you would like and what you would like engraved. Joke: A heavy snowstorm closed the schools in one town. When the children returned to school a few days later, one grade-school teacher asked her students whether they had used the time away from school constructively. I sure did, teacher, one girl replied. I just prayed for more snow. Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

Reflecting on the Word The story goes that as the ship Titanic sank into the North Sea, the ship s band played the hymn Nearer, My God, to Thee, the first verse of which is: Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!. Even though it be a cross that raiseth me, Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee. While some have questioned the truth of this account, the appeal of the story remains, because the bravery of the musicians who continued to play to lift the hearts of the passengers reminds us of how suffering and disaster, rather than beating us down and defeating us, can become the means by which we are lifted up to God. This feast is called the Exaltation of the Holy Cross because it celebrates the cross as the occasion of Jesus being lifted up to God to be a sign of the world s salvation. In some paradoxical way, it is in his humiliation that Jesus most clearly shows us the nature of divine love. In coming to know and believe in this love, we are healed and given eternal life. Just as the sight of the bronze serpent saved the Israelites from the venom of the seraph, so too our coming to see Jesus in faith heals us of the deadly poison of sin. What we see in Jesus we see also in our own lives. In a way that we cannot always understand, the crosses that we encounter in our lives lift us nearer to God, provided that we embrace them in the faith that Jesus has transformed the meaning of suffering. If in the midst of suffering and disaster we can look to the one who was raised up on the cross for our salvation, we will not perish but have eternal life. For Prayer and Discussion: When I look at an image of the crucified Jesus, how does it speak to me of God s love and healing? Are their experiences in my life when I have felt that distress or suffering have ultimately drawn me closer to God? - from Living the Word Registration forms are available from the Pastoral Center during regular office hours, or you may download a form from our website at www.stveronicassf.com.
