FIRST UNITED CHURCH OF OAK PARK 3 DECEMBER 2017 - ADVENT ONE An open community united in love and justice

PREPARING FOR WORSHIP Do not remember the former things or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:18-19 *Please stand in body or spirit. Please silence cell phones. GATHERING MUSIC It Came Upon A Midnight Clear arr. by Clark Tyler Hanging of the Greens Orchestra OUR LIFE TOGETHER Please sign and pass the connections pew pad. Lydia Mulkey As we prepare for worship, let us state why we gather as First United Church of Oak Park: We are moving from words to witness in our relationship with God, From individualism to intimate fellowship in our relationship with each other, From charity to changing structures of injustice in our relationship with the world. May we do so through our worship today. GATHERING AS GOD S PEOPLE PROCESSION OF THE POINSETTIAS Prepare the Way of the Lord Prepare the way of the Lord! Prepare the way of the Lord! Make a straight path for him, make a straight path. Prepare the way of the Lord! Preschool, Kinders, First Grade Come, thou long-expected Jesus, born to set thy people free. From our fears and sins release us; Let us find our rest in thee. THE ADVENT WREATH The Davis Porter Family Why have you come to this place and this time? We come to worship and to wait. What is it you want from your God? We come hoping for hope. Have you heard the words of the prophet Isaiah? We have heard the prophet say, "From ancient times, no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any god but you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for you!" We wait in hope. This is the light that is coming into the world. This is the light of hope.

The candle of hope is lit as we sing. HYMN One Candle Is Lit (verse one) CRADLE SONG CALL TO PRAYER Seventh Grader We are not perfect. We fall into fits of hopeless inaction. We resign ourselves to the world as it is, and to our lives as they are. In this time of confession, dare to hope for all that is good and right. Dare to believe it is possible in your own life and in our world. SUNG PRAYER FOR WHOLENESS O holy child of Bethlehem descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tiding tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel! SILENCE IS KEPT. SUNG ASSURANCE OF LOVE How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the glorious love of heaven. No one discerns God's coming, but in this world of sin, Where yearning souls long to be whole, the dear Christ enters in.

*PASSING THE PEACE The peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. Seventh Grader LISTENING FOR GOD S WORD TO US PREPARING THE STABLE Alicia Reese ANTHEM Dance and Sing, for the Lord Will Be With Us by Hal Hopson Dance and sing, for the Lord will be with us. Glory, hallelujah. Second through Fifth Grades Peace and justice soon will be with us. Glory, hallelujah. Clap your hands and sing: Glory, hallelujah. Joyful voices ring. Glory, hallelujah. Soon a Son shall come through Jesse. His delight shall be the Lord. He shall reign with truth and justice. Come, O Savior, come. Wolf and lamb shall rest together; Calf and lion shall join as friends. Peace shall come to all the nations. Come, O Savior, come. READING Mark 13:24-37 (NT p. 50) Seventh Grader SERMON The Hopefuls and The Melancholies Eighth Grade RESPONDING TO GOD S WORD PRAYER OF DEDICATION Jackson Hickok-Fletcher Offerings are a sacred act of worship. If you are hungry for something more, come and eat. If you are thirsty for meaning, come and drink. This is God's table. You do not need to be a member of this church or any church to feast at this table. God is the host, and we are all guests. GREAT THANKSGIVING God be with you. And also with you. Open your hearts.
