Good News Messenger Vol. 11 No. 4 First Southern Baptist Church Mattoon, Illinois April 3, 2013 From Our Pastor So, what s happening in April? That s right, our REVIVAL. People have been asking me when the REVIVAL is. It is April 14-17 th. Dr. Roger Marshall will be our evangelist. He is the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Effingham, IL. He is also the son of Rev. Frank Marshall. I have heard Dr. Marshall speak before, and I was impressed. Needless to say, we should be praying for the Lord to move in our midst and be ready for how He is going to move. We have a sign-up sheet for anyone who would like to commit to pray for this revival. We have made it for a 24 hour period, so whenever it is convenient for you to pray, then that will be a great time to do so. Praying specifically is good prayer to offer. You may want to pray that God will lead people to church here who are ready and need to hear the life-saving message that comes through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. You may want to pray for people who you know who are not in church and they need to get back in church. You may want to pray for people to take a good look at their spiritual lives and need to get serious about living for the Lord. I also ask you to pray for Dr. Marshall. Please pray that the Lord is already in the midst of preparing him to present the messages that the Lord wants us to hear in a way that we will be receptive to hear. All in all, let s pray for REVIVAL! May God, in Christ, richly bless you! Thank you, Lord Jesus, for a wonderful service on Palm Sunday. It is such a joy to work with the amazing people that are in our choir. It is so much more than musical ability, it is people who love Jesus and want to use their God given gifts to praise Him. A special thanks to Rhonda & Terry who set up the sanctuary and worked with the DVD & computer. Soloists all did a beautiful job. Also, great job to our speakers. When they all came Sunday morning with their parts memorized, I was in awe! Great Job! Great Job! Also, a special thanks to Marilyn, who faithfully serves us with playing the piano, and the praise band who also faithfully serve week after week. Thank you. Looking forward to seeing what God is planning on doing in our future. As Adoniram Judson says, The future is as bright as the promises of God. Julie Calio Interim Music Director. Lynn Shaffer Children s Department Director Deacons Corner Easter is past and spring is coming. This reminds us of new life in the physical world but most importantly for man because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Each of us is the personal specific creation of God and we bear his distinctive sacred image even though it is marred by the fall into sin. We are created by God and we must reverence each human life. To repeat a quote God never created a nobody. Everybody is somebody to God. We live in a world that is upside-down, downward moving, immoral and searching. We must not shut out the lost but mirror and exalt Jesus Christ in loving them as He loved us. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repents, more than over
the ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Luke15:7 Each and every one of us is significant to our Heavenly Father. Us means all people homosexuals, atheists, unwed mothers, couples living together outside of marriage, and people who abuse their bodies in drugs, alcohol or prostitution. Each of us is born into a dark world, but thanks to God s love, Jesus has given us a way to live in the light. Do we have the same urgency and joy of heaven when we reach others for eternity? The church is a place of rescue for the lost, a place that rejects sin but not the sinner. God never calls us for which He does not supply resources and power through the Holy Spirit. Let us not try to be a Christian without the power of the Holy Spirit. To do so is moralism or self-effort. The world could know how much Christ loves them if our I wish passion to reach the world became I will compassion. God s richest blessing on you, The Deacons VBS We had two attend the VBS kick-off at Marshall Missionary Baptist Church. We now have every main teacher position filled; we just need a lot of helpers still in almost every classroom. After Easter we will work on getting our t- shirts and seeing what materials each teacher needs We are having VBS the first full week of June 2-7 th from 5:45-8:15 p.m. One goal this year is to spread the word in our community by taking fliers throughout Mattoon. Working more in the school district this year, I m keenly aware of the children in our community that are not raised in Christian homes. One boy I met did not know what a Bible was. We who know have a responsibility of getting the message out to those who do not know. VBS is the best tool for that. Please be praying on how we can reach Mattoon with the gospel of Christ. Thanks. Julie Calio VBS Director Did You Know? The last word in the Bible is AMEN. About 50 Bibles are sold every minute. The Bible was written in three languages: Hebrew, Aramaic, and Koine Greek. The Bible, the world's best-selling book, is also the world's most shoplifted book. The word "Christian" appears only three times in the Bible: Acts 11:26; 26:28; 1 Peter 4:16.

Our goal this year was $2,000.00 and we far exceeded that. Total giving at the end of March was $2,510.00. Every year during Easter month we take a special offering for North American missions. The offering is named after Annie Walker Armstrong (1850-1938), a Woman s Missionary Union (WMU) leader in Baltimore, Maryland. Every penny that we give to the Annie Armstrong Easter offering is used for missionaries working in North America to spread the Word of Christ to the lost. "What are the ribbons for?" he inquired. The little old lady said: "If I pull the left ribbon, he sings 'Clementine', and if I pull the right ribbon, he sings 'We'll Meet Again'." "And what happens if you pull both ribbons at the same time?" asked the pastor. "I fall off the perch!" said the parrot
