St. Ann s Parish 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time January 14, 2018 One of the things as a pastor that I most dread doing is asking for money. I know that many people complain whenever I ask for money. I also know that many families are struggling financially and are doing the best they can to support our parish. But I also know that one of my responsibilities as your pastor is to take care of the temporal goods and needs of our parish, and if I never talk about it because it is difficult, our parish will fall into ruins, and future generations will fault me for not properly addressing the financial situation of the parish with you. The members of our Finance Committee meet with me and look over our finances to make sure our spending is appropriate to keep the expenses down, as does the Archdiocese. I have always rejoiced that the Archdiocese tells me there is no pork in our budget and that I am running the parish in a fiscally responsible manner. At the same time, we are still in debt and our support from parishioners does not meet our necessary expenses, which include such major bills as the heating of our buildings during the winter, air conditioning of the church in summer, plus the proper maintenance and supplies to keep us safe, including repairs that minimize the possibility of someone getting hurt and snow removal in the winter. You may have noticed in the bulletin that the weekly collection is seldom predictable. Some weeks are good, other aren t. Bad weather kills us. While some people are faithful and place both envelopes in the collection the next Sunday, other are not, and loose money in the collection is lost. In addition, not everyone comes to St. Ann s for Mass every weekend. Often our parishioners will attend other parishes while at work, visiting family, etc. All of this drains our finances and my ability to predict a steady income for the parish. For this reason, the Finance Committee has strongly urged me to encourage everyone to consider Automated Giving. Automated Giving allows you to set up once how much you wish to give each week or month, plus how much you wish to give to second collections, as gifts at Easter, Christmas, etc., and then never have to worry about it again! Your contribution will be automatically withdrawn from your bank account or charged to your credit card, whichever you prefer. Benefits for you are that you never have to worry about forgetting your envelopes or not having enough cash in your wallet to place in the envelope before you come to Mass. Benefits for me are that I can have a steady income for the parish, and if everyone were on board, we would not lose income due to snow or your being away. It also encourages everyone to see our parish offering as a necessary expense and not merely as a charity, which helps increase our understanding of stewardship proper support of our parish which is the responsibility of us all. Sign-up is simple: just visit the following link: https:// www.parishgiving.org/main.aspx. You can also find it as a link on our website: http://www.stannsyonkers.org. Next weekend after Mass, volunteers will be in Fr. Anthony Hall to answer any questions you may have and to help sign parishioners up for Automated Giving. All you need to bring is your checkbook or your credit card to set up your donation. Set it up once and you re set for life! Please consider using Automated Giving for your support of St. Ann s. The Archdiocese of New York is hosting a prayer vigil here in New York for all parishes of the Archdiocese to come together to commemorate the 45 th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade. St. Pope John Paul II has said that prayer is the most powerful force in human history! The prayer vigil will be at Saint Patrick s Cathedral on Sunday, January 21, 2018, beginning with Holy Mass at 5:30PM, followed by Adoration with music by the Sisters of Life. For those who could not be present at the March for Life in Washington D.C., this event offers a local pilgrimage for the building up of the culture of life in our nation. The event is open to all parishioners, families, parish groups, the young and the young at heart. The Catholic Widows and Widowers of Yonkers is a social, religious and bereavement organization which helps to meet the needs of its membership. We meet on the third Thursday of each month. The next meeting will be on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at 1:00PM in Fr. Anthony Hall, 31 College Place, Yonkers, NY 10704. New members are welcome. For more information, call: 914-423-5331. Adoption - Children in China need homes. More boys available than girls. Older parents and single women welcome. For more information please call Barbara Salvesen at 845-623-5277. Page 7 482
