TIRELESS DISCIPLESHIP The stories we ve been hearing these weeks come from the very first chapter of Mark, and they show us the public ministry of Jesus in its infancy. Today s account shows some of the strain or adjustment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and possessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. Simon Peter and the others don t just look for him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited. With the selfsacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, he is also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world. Televisions were black and white, cars were the size of small airplanes, and computers were just beginning. However, nothing has changed as much as our religious practices. The entire social climate of that period was quite different than it is today. Religion was a major part of everyday life for the majority of the people in this country. Sunday was a day of rest, a day to worship God. Except for restaurants, most businesses were closed and workers had the day off. Before Vatican II, the Mass was a quiet affair, with the priest turned away from the congregation and murmuring the prayers in Latin. The result was a sense of mystery and a feeling of the sacred. It was also a time for wandering minds since there was nothing to occupy them. At the Mass each Sunday, the only readings were a Gospel and an Epistle. The rest of the week, that same Gospel (but not the epistle) was read every day. The readings were the same year after year, so the knowledge of the Bible was limited to just those readings for most Catholics since the discouraged private reading of the Bible. (As a result, Catholics learned less than 15% of the New Testament and almost nothing of the Old Testament.) On Saturday afternoon, four or five priests would be hearing confessions for two hours and there were a dozen people outside each confessional for the entire time. The next morning another priest would hear confessions before each Mass all the way up until the Consecration. In spite of this, many of the people did not receive communion. The reason for not receiving may have been for not getting to confession, but it was just as likely to be that they had taken a drink of water that morning. The rule was that you had to fast from midnight in order to receive the sacred host, and the fasting included even water. In the late morning Masses, there were often people who passed out due to lack of food and water. Masses were only on Sundays, with no evening Masses on Saturday. Every Friday was a day of abstinence from meat, and Fisherman s Wharf was packed for Friday dinners. During Lent, fasting for those over 20 was also required every day of the week except Sundays. Fasting meant that only one full meal was allowed, with a bowl of cereal or a piece of toast at breakfast or lunch. In addition, there was the Index, a list of forbidden books, and the Legion of Decency, a rating of all movies according to Catholic morality. A rating of A meant that the movie was unobjectionable, B was objectionable in part, and C was totally objectionable. Catholics were to pledge adherence to these standards each year, and the system was so successful that Hollywood rarely made movies that violated it. The simple reality is that the churches of that period were so full that there were Masses at which you had to stand on the stairs in front of the church because there was not adequate room to go inside, with as many as forty or fifty standing on the steps out front. During the summer, resort areas often had outdoor masses because well over 100 people were unable to fit in the church for a Sunday mass. Needless to say, times have changed. Between sporting events, television, the internet and cell phones, Sundays are not longer the day of rest and religion is often lost in the shuffle. What will happen in the next 60 years? ~DN
