AUGUST 14, 2016 ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH_ #481/PAGE 4 OUR LADY OF FATIMA STATUE I returned Saturday from a retreat at St. Benedict Abbey in Still River, MA. It was a beautiful and peaceful setting that lent itself to prayer and meditation. No TV, radio or newspapers. Only the heavenly sound of Gregorian Chant from the monks at Mass and the Divine Office permeated the air. I remembered all in our parish as I concelebrated the Ordinary Form Latin Mass. The Abbey is family friendly and offers an opportunity for families to draw closer together. The Monks also offer a Father/Son Retreat two times during the summer. Fathers may wish to consider that for next year. You can find information on the Abbey s website at Abbey.org. Next year is the 100th anniversary of the Blessed Mother s apparition to the 3 children at Fatima. At that time, Our Lady told the children to pray the Rosary daily and offer sacrifices for sinners. If her requests were fulfilled, the war would end and sinners would be converted. St. Columbanus Parish has a statue of the Pilgrim Virgin, Our Lady of Fatima. We hope you and your family will open your hearts and welcome the statue into your home to pray the Rosary with family and friends. To set up a date, or for more information, please call Bobbi at 914-737-1416, or Ann at 914-402- 4374. Monday is the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary. Although not a Holy Day this year, we will have an evening Mass at 7 pm at St. Columbanus and a 10 am Mass at the Martyrs Church, besides our regular weekday Masses so that we can honor our Lady. We continue with the seventh installment of the letter on the Mass by ROBERT CARDINAL SARAH, from Guinea, who is Prefect of the Congregation for the Divine Worship: In reality, an understanding of the rites is not achieved by human reason left to itself, as if it could grasp everything, understand everything, master everything. An understanding of the sacred rites is the fruit of the sensus fidei, which exercises living faith through symbol and understands more by affinity than by concept. Such understanding presupposes that one draws near to the mystery with humility. But will we have the courage to follow the Council all the way to this point? Yet it is only such a reading, illumined by faith, which constitutes the foundation for evangelization. Indeed, the liturgy shows forth the Church to those who are outside as a sign lifted up among the nations, under which the scattered children of God may be gathered together ( 2). In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Frank Samoylo RENEWING IN THE SPIRIT MINI-RETREAT Renewing in the Spirit mini-retreat will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2016, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the House of Prayer, 194 Gaylor Road, Scarsdale, NY 10583. It will be given by Fr. Anthony Omenihu, Parochial Vicar of St. Columbanus Catholic Church in Cortlandt Manor, NY. There will be praise/worship led by The Voice of Praise music ministry, a talk on the Church s Mission of Mercy, liturgy and conclude with a light lunch. There is NO CHARGE, but a love offering will be accepted. Being that space is limited at the House of Prayer, please RSVP 914-737-4286 no later than Wednesday, September 7th.
