LHS School Newsletter, Issue #5 December 19, 2017 Lutheran High School Infinity White and Brandon Charles portray Mary and Joseph in the LHS Nativity Play This week our students are taking their 1st semester exams. Our Christmas holidays begin after exams at noon on Wednesday, December 20th. Leading up to this week, we have enjoyed many fun and rewarding activities with our LHS students, parents, and grandparents. We welcomed grandparents and other family members to campus on Grandparents Day on December 5th. Grandparents enjoyed breakfast with their student(s), toured the school, and then attended Chapel service with the faculty and students. Thank you to all who visited with us on Grandparents Day! On December 8th, we hosted a school wide Christmas Celebration. Thank you to many students, grandparents, and family members who sent food, volunteered, and helped out with this wonderful Christmas tradition. The Student Council hosted a wonderful lunch which featured the culinary talents of our many LHS families. The Service Club sponsored prize drawings and treat bags for all of the students. The Theatre Class and the Choir Class presented the Nativity Story, and the LHS Cheerleaders performed a special Christmas cheer routine. We even experienced some NOLA sneaux! We also wish to thank Pastor C.J., and the members of the First English Church for the use of the building and for the delicioius desserts! During this season of Advent, we are preparing to celebrate the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. During this busy time of the year, it is our prayer that we keep the joys and blessings of Christmas in our hearts. Please be safe during the holidays while traveling and shopping. We look forward to welcoming back our students on Thursday, January 4, 2018. The school office will be closed from December 21 - January 3rd. As always we appreciate all of the many ways our students and LHS families share their talents and gifts of time with us. Chapel News This year s Chapel Theme is All Things New! The theme is rooted in Revelation 21: 5 and 2 Corinthians 5: 17, focusing on the regeneration, freedom and justification we receive though the work of Christ. We are in the season of Advent, a time of looking ahead to the miracle of Christmas in the Incarnation of God in the person of Christ, as well as looking ahead to his second coming, when Jesus will MAKE ALL THINGS NEW. Thank you Ms. Loughmiller and Pastor Manning for sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ being born and living among us for our salvation with the students of LHS this Advent season. This year's Chapel theme is: This month we also had many of our grandparents join us on Grandparents Day, but you do not have to wait for a special event to join us. The entire Gryphon community is welcomed to worship with us. Chapel services are from 9:25-10:00 A.M. on Tuesday mornings. All Things New Love: Our loving God no longer sees us in our sin, but instead the Righteousness of CHRIST ALONE. Honor: The status of honor is restored to us in CHRIST ALONE. Serve: CHRIST ALONE is the perfect servant and our example. LHS Welcomes Grandparents! Grandparents fill our hearts with love! Faculty and staff welcomed grandparents and special family guests to Grandparents Day. Our VIP guests enjoyed breakfast with their grandchildren, received a small gift, toured the school, and attended our school-wide Chapel service.

Mr. Dauss Medieval Feast! Students in Mr. Dauss history classes enjoyed a Medieval Feast complete with smoked turkey, smoked ribs, fruit, bread, and fruits. Students learned about the hiearchy of social positions, music, and different forms of medieval entertainment. Thanks to the LHS alums and parents who volunteered to help! Service Hour Reminder Holiday breaks are a great time to earn service hours! Second Harvest is always looking for additional volunteers around Christmas (www.no-hunger.org). Other community groups may also be in need of holiday help. We would encourage you to look for opportunities in your neighborhoods. Senior parents you need to remember that Service Hours are a graduation requirement. Seniors who are still in need of more than 40 hours, and juniors who are in need of more than 80 hours, must secure volunteer sites other than LHS sponsored activities. Service Hour Summaries will be updated again at the end of the semester and mailed with report cards. Blank Service Hour forms may be picked up in the office or hours may be submitted on the organization s letterhead. Hours turned in by January 4th will be added to the summaries to be mailed with report cards.

Counselor s Corner Hello students and parents! As a reminder, I am available for counseling sessions during first 5 periods of the day, from 8:45am 12:00pm). Students can come to me for academic, college/career, and personal issues. I hope that each and every student can feel comfortable talking and coming to me! JUNIORS AND SENIORS: As always, stop by the Counseling Office to speak with Mrs. Robin about college and career opportunities that are right for you! REMEMBER: ACT test dates are happening throughout the year, as listed in this newsletter. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Robin or Mrs. Loughmiller. COUNSELOR S DIRECT LINE 504-779-1726 ACT PREP & ACT TESTING AT LUTHERAN Please remember that Saturday ACT Prep is ongoing throughout the year at Lutheran. Students may sign up on the sheet outside of Ms. Jackson s room here at school. The ACT is being given AT LUTHERAN for the December and February tests (December 9th and February 10th). Visit www.act.org to register or ask Mrs. Robin for assistance in signing up! Please be aware of the registration deadlines to avoid late fees! ATTENTION JUNIORS AND SENIORS: ACT INFORMATION The Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance (LOFSA) is the office responsible for TOPS awards and other state-based financial aid for college. The LOFSA office has an easier job of distributing TOPS awards when your ACT scores are sent directly to the LOFSA office. In order to make this process easier, when you sign up for the ACT on act. org, you may select the LOFSA ACT code when asked which colleges or institutions you want your ACT sent to. The LOFSA ACT code is 1595. For more questions, see Mrs. Robin in the Counseling Office! FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA) INFORMATION Attention Seniors!!! If you have not heard, completing a FAFSA application is now part of the graduation requirements for the Class of 2018 across the state of Louisiana. The FAFSA application opens on October 1, and parents can use their 2015 OR 2016 tax information to apply. This application is how students can access loans, grants, and scholarship money for college, technical college, and more! Filling out the FAFSA is how you become eligible for TOPS!! Without it, you will not receive TOPS! For tutorials on how to apply and complete the FAFSA, visit https://www.louisianabelieves.com/courses/financialaid. PSAT SCORES RECEIVED Student scores on the PSAT 8/9 and PSAT/NMSQT were released to our school. The administration will go over the results and discuss them with teachers. In a timely fashion, we will release these results to parents and students, and Mrs. Robin will be discussing their importance and how the scores will be used during the remainder of students high school careers. She will teach students how to effectively read and interpret the scores, and discuss their meaning!

A Lutheran High School Christmas Celebration On Friday, December 8th, Lutheran High School held a school-wide Christmas Celebration! The festivities began with the Student Council sponsored pot luck holiday luncheon. Mother Nature was even feeling celebratory and gave us some NOLA Sneaux! Students then enjoyed a special Nativity performance presented by the LHS Choir and Theatre classes. Afterwards, the Service Club awarded prizes to students, and contestants in the Ugly Sweater contest modeled their creative holiday attire. The LHS Cheerleaders closed out the performances with some Gryphon Spirit and then led students in a round of Christmas Carols. The day ended with a visit from Santa and some competitive classroom door decorating. Many thanks to Pastor C.J. and the members of the First English Church, the Student Council, the Service Club, our student performers, our dedicated faculty, and our wonderful parents, and LHS families!

Keeping Up with Lil Louie: Our Junior Mascot, Lil Louie (our Senior Mascot is Louie). Lil Louie is very interested in sharing with everyone what it means to be a Gryphon! Here s some of what he s been up to lately: You can follow Lil Louie and his quest to spread the LHS Gryphon spirit on Instagram @lutheranhighnola, on Twitter @ LHSgryphons, or follow us on Facebook at Lutheran High School NOLA. Amazon has a program called AmazonSmile which will automatically donate 0.5% of your purchases to the charity you select. It costs you (and us) nothing, and it's just like shopping on Amazon normally, but you get to do a world of good. To sign up, go to www.smile.amazon.com, and search for Lutheran High School of Greater New Orleans. Once you add us as your chosen charity, Amazon will do the rest! The only real catch is that you have to start your shopping at smile.amazon.com (which means that you have to update your bookmark). Everything else is the exact same Amazon shopping experience.

ATHLETIC NEWS: Our winter sports seasons of Girls and Boys Basketball, Cheerleading, and Soccer are underway. Please work with your child to help her/him prioritize academics while fulfilling her/his team obligation. Practices are important for conditioning and developing team chemistry. Basketball and soccer practices are held daily. Our coaches willingly give of their time and assume responsibility for your child after school. Please make sure that your child and/or you are communicating with the coach. Missed practices should be the exception and not the rule. You may always call the school office to leave a message for the coach or athletic director. Basketball/Cheerleading Parents: Mount Olive Lutheran Church generously allows us to use their gymnasium as our home court. This act is truly a blessing! Our obligation to Mount Olive is to make sure that we leave the gym as we found it so that they may hold their pre-school classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This effort takes some time storing bleachers, sweeping the floor, re-setting play equipment and tables, clearing dressing rooms, etc. We need our athletes to help with this effort! Extra hands are always welcome! Find a coach and we will let you know how you may assist! CHEERLEADING PERFORMANCES: On Saturday, December 16th the Cheerleaders performed in the Harahan Christmas Parade. Many thanks to everyone who came out to support our LHS cheerleaders!

LHS: Love Honor Serve Christ perfectly loved, honored and served God. At Lutheran High School, we are imitators of Christ. We believe LHS means to: Love: Because Christ first loved us, Gryphons love and follow Him and His teachings. Honor: Because Christ perfectly honored the Father, Gryphons Honor God in all we do and say. Serve: Because Christ served perfectly, even to his sacrifice on the cross, Gryphons serve Christ, our families, and our community. Love, Honor, and Serve...this is what it means to be a LHS Gryphon Parent Teacher League (PTL) We love parent volunteers! We appreciate all of our Lutheran High School students and families! If you would like to sign up to participate in LHS school events, please contact Jennifer Williams via e-mail at jenmarie535@yahoo.com.
