The Promise of Christmas Stephen Harris, Superintendent The birth of Jesus stands as the most pivotal moment in history. Emmanuel, God with us. The Savior of the world, come to earth in the form of a baby. Who doesn t ooo and ah over a newborn baby? A baby is promise for many reasons, but none more important than life itself. Babies are an extension of who we are. Our DNA, passed on. Baby Jesus came and was called, Emmanuel, God with us. God, our Heavenly Father, sent His Son to be born of a virgin. An extension of Himself to walk this earth and ultimately to give His life a ransom for our sins. It is unthinkable that any parent could do such a thing with their son or daughter, yet God gave His son so that we might know the promise of life, of redemption, of peace and joy. Heaven s arches rang when the angels sang, proclaiming Thy royal decree; But of lowly birth cam st Thou, Lord, on earth, and in great humility, Oh come to my heart, Lord Jesus! There is room in my heart for Thee. Hymn of Christmas by Emily Steele. I have asked the Holy Spirit to anoint to my heart the precious truth of Christmas. Make that your prayer as well. A personal revival in my own heart of the promise the Babe of the manger brought to us. Marjorie and I are humbled to serve you. Thank you for this rewarding privilege. We sincerely send our love to each one of you and pray for you a most blessed Christmas season. I am overcome with emotion and gratitude in my heart every Christmas season as the reality comes again of this most magnificent gift from Heaven. Thou didst leave Thy throne and Thy Kingly crown, when Thou camest to earth for me; But in Bethlehem s home there was found no room for Thy holy nativity: Oh come to my heart, Lord Jesus! There is room in my heart for Thee. 3

Season of Advent As we come into the season of Advent I m reminded of a story told by Paul Harvey. It s entitled: A Man and the Birds and reads, The man to whom I m going to introduce you was not a scrooge, he was a kind decent, mostly good man. Generous to his family, upright in his dealings with other men. But he just didn t believe all that incarnation stuff which the churches proclaim at Christmas Time. It just didn t make sense and he was too honest to pretend otherwise. He just couldn t swallow the Jesus Story, about God coming to Earth as a man. I m truly sorry to distress you, he told his wife, but I m not going with you to church this Christmas Eve. He said he d feel like a hypocrite. That he d much rather just stay at home, but that he would wait up for them. And so he stayed and they went to the midnight service. Shortly after the family drove away in the car, snow began to fall. He went to the window to watch the flurries getting heavier and heavier and then went back to his fireside chair and began to read his newspaper. Minutes later he was startled by a thudding sound Then another, and then another. Sort of a thump or a thud At first he thought someone must be throwing snowballs against his living room window. But when he went to the front door to investigate he found a flock of birds huddled miserably in the snow. They d been caught in the storm and, in a desperate search for shelter, had tried to fly through his large landscape window. Well, he couldn t let the poor creatures lie there and freeze, so he remembered the barn where his children stabled their pony. That would provide a warm shelter, if he could direct the birds to it. Quickly he put on a coat, galoshes, tramped through the deepening snow to the barn. He opened the doors wide and turned on a light, but the birds did not come in. He figured food would entice them in. So he hurried back to the house, fetched breadcrumbs, sprinkled them on the snow, making a trail to the yellow-lighted wide open doorway of the stable. But to his dismay, the birds ignored the breadcrumbs an continued to flap around helplessly in the snow. He tried catching them He tried shooing them into the barn by walking around them waving his arms. Instead, they scattered in every direction, except into the warm, lighted barn. And then, he realized that they were afraid of him. To them, he reasoned, I am a strange and terrifying creature. If only I could think of some way to let them know that they can trust me That I am not trying to hurt them, but to help them. But how? Because any move he made tended to frighten them and 5 confuse them. They just would not follow. They would not be led or shooed because they feared him. If only I could be a bird, he thought to himself, and mingle with them and speak their language. Then I could tell them not to be afraid. Then I could show them the way to safe, warm to the safe warm barn. But I would have to be one of them so they could see, and hear and understand. At that moment the church bells began to ring. The sound reached his ears above the sounds of the wind. And he stood there listening to the bells Adeste Fidelis listening to the bells pealing the glad tidings of Christmas. And he sank to his knees in the snow. The Man and the Birds by Paul Harvey Dearest Network family, every time I hear or read this story it reminds me of missions. So many in our world are like the lost birds who need shelter from the storm. She will give birth to a son, and you will call him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. Matthew 1:21 May we never grow weary of doing our best to bring the lost to Jesus. Sue and I want to thank our missionaries who are willing to go, our churches who are wiling to pray and our Pastors who are willing to give. When we all work together, then many throughout the world can invite the King of glory into their hearts and find the Prince of peace. We d also like to remind you especially this time of year to reach out to your missionary family and send them a card, email, care package or special offering. They are away from family and friends and would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Love and prayers, Ron & Sue Ron Rockwell Assistant Superintendent teamrockwell@aol.com

Ten40 Church We wanted to share the story of Ten40 Church with our network. This story shows the Lord s faithfulness! Join us in celebrating Ten40 church as they plan to move into a new building! In 2007 Pastor Dave Beach began sensing God preparing him for a transition into ministry. At the time, he was serving as Youth Pastor at a great church, with a great team of leaders, and an incredible congregation. Yet, the call to go persisted, and as soon the confirmation of transition materialized. He had a conversation with Pastor Harris - Would you consider planting a church in Tempe? - the very thing we were sensing God calling us to! the more we submitted to God s plan, the more His plan materialized, and the more we allowed God to have his way, the more of His way we were allowed to participate in. Our church planting experience has confirmed God s faithfulness and provision to that which he calls His people to do. We are certainly no exception, but only a small part of the great things God is doing in Arizona. Join us in celebrating this church plant and all that the Lord is doing in Tempe! Being blessed by their Pastor and church to go, the church planting process began. Ten40 started with small group meetings at a local bookstore which grew into a church service at a local arts school. During the first couple of years Pastor Dave and his wife Roxie did more ploughing and planting than harvesting which became quite discouraging. Upon seeking the Lord, though, they were reassured of their direction and simply instructed to trust Him. In response they surrendered their expectations and put the future in God s hands. They soon found themselves being asked to serve in various leadership positions in the community, they took the Acts 2 journey, which helped organize the vision and the people of the church, and we were able to lease an aged, yet suitable, church building for Sunday services. Eight months into their lease the owner sold them the property for no money down, carried the note, and adjusted their monthly mortgage payments to accommodate their income. Within one year of ownership, property values tripled allowing them to sell the dilapidated building and purchase new property in Tempe for cash. The new property is currently being developed with a move in date scheduled for fall 2019. Pastor Dave states that The real work, though, has been in the lives and hearts of the people in the church. Commitments to follow Jesus, Spirit baptisms, and a hunger to grow up into Christ characterizes them. What we ve learned in this church planting process is: 6 Leigh Metcalf Secretary-Treasurer, AZ Missions lmetcalf@

Note to self don t miss Christmas! Keep your hearts at attention, in adoration before Christ 1 Peter 3:15a (The Message) I may not go so far as to say I actually missed some Christmases through the years, but as many pastors may identify with, I certainly risked losing some of the personal joys of the season. It was easy to lose my personal celebration due to the demands of leading the season s corporate worship. I easily recall building sets and writing/directing productions when my girls were young (those 1990 s), and struggling to ensure our family celebration went as well as the church s! Like many things in a pastor s home life, Christmas can easily get squeezed by the church events that surround this most wonderful time of the year. And, what a great time it is to prepare a creative sermon series, engage in community outreach, and get the congregation to invite others to hear about Jesus! Yet, amidst it all, a pastor must not allow the public ministry to overwhelm their own personal worship experience surrounding Christ s incarnation. 7

So, let me recommend a few things you can do in your personal life: Intentionally prepare your mind and heart for Christmas in late November. Daily weave the classic incarnation texts into your private devotions December 1-25. Meditate on those texts even consider memorizing a few new incarnation verses. Get out the hymnal and sing the worshipful Christmas hymns in your devo time. Take Hark the Herald Angels Sing line by line and connect Scripture to each phrase. Determine to truly worship the Lord in every corporate opportunity the season brings. Stay healthy in ministry! Jeff Peterson Pastoral Care Director How to not miss Christmas!
