INFANT BAPTISM: To schedule a Baptism, please contact the Parish Office. Parents are expected to attend a Pre-Baptismal session. The celebration and registration for the Sacrament of Baptism will still be at the individual parishes. MARRIAGE: Dates for Marriages are scheduled only through the priest and only after an initial meeting with the couple. Church law requires a minimum of six months notice before a wedding can be celebrated. In light of the many arrangements for a wedding, the couple should contact the priest as soon as possible after the engagement is announced. INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC: Those wishing to share in the sacramental life of the Catholic Church are invited to contact the Parish Office. This specifically applies to those wishing to be baptized, who have not previously shared in the Eucharist, who have not sought to share the sacrament of Confirmation, or those raised in another faith but now choosing to share our Catholic faith. HOSPITALIZED OR HOMEBOUND: If a parishioner is in the hospital or sick at home, please call the Social Ministry Office to arrange for a pastoral visit. Each hospital has a chaplain for emergencies. PRAYERS FOR THE SICK: Please call the Main Office or Social Ministry Office to request your loved one to be on the Prayer List. Due to HIPPA Regulations, only an immediate family member can make this request. SPONSOR LETTERS: Only active and registered members will be issued a Sponsor Letter. The Sponsor should contact the Parish Office at least one week prior to the date needed. DIOCESAN VICTIM ABUSE HOTLINE: For anyone who has been abused by church personnel, please call (412)456-3060 or 1-888-808-1235.

Pastor s Perspective Fr. John R. Rushofsky Pastor jrushofsky@saintsebastianparish.org Evil Anywhere Affects Us All The mass shooting that took place at the Tree of Life Congregation in Squirrel Hill last weekend, when 11 people were killed and others, including police officers, were wounded, was a devastating demonstration of both hatred and cowardice. As Christians, we are called to extend our prayers and comfort and whatever else we can offer to our Jewish brothers and sisters. This tragedy hits us locally in a very personal way: Richard Gottfried, husband of Saint Athanasius Parish member Peg Durachko, was among those who lost their lives while gathered in a house of worship. We extend to them and their family our deepest condolences and a pledge of our prayers and support. Let me add that this is the kind of potential disaster that gives us pastors nightmares, because we all like to think our congregations are safe in our churches. But the sad truth is that there is no place on this planet in which we are completely safe, and anyone can walk into any of our churches and gun us down. We do not have security entrances in our churches because we want everyone to feel welcome. So let s hope we don t have to go that route, but let us remain always vigilant. Grant them eternal rest, O Lord. May they rest in peace. IN OTHER NEWS: If you didn t get to the Craft Fair at Holy Cross Academy on October 20, you missed lots of excitement, fun people, many wonderful crafts, and good food. Here s hoping it becomes an annual event.daylight Savings Time ends this weekend and we gain back the hour we lost last spring as we return to Eastern Standard Time.stay tuned for more news. In fact many people don t know this practice has been in use for a while. If you write a check, please be sure make it out to your parish and to still use your envelope. Adoration at Incarnation of the Lord Church Every Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy and the Rosary start at 3:00. Christmas Discernment Retreat Where do you search for consolation? College and post-college men come to The Word Was Made Flesh: A Christmas Discernment Retreat, held December 14-16 at St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center. This retreat will speak to the call God has placed in your life; and allow you to learn more about discerning your vocation. The weekend will include Mass, Adoration, conferences, the opportunity for Confession, and solid brotherhood. No cost. Must be 18 or older. Visit PGHPriest.com by December 7th to register. Amen to Action On the day after Thanksgiving, thousands are expected at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center to sing, pray, celebrate, and pack over one million meals for the hungry. This is the second annual Amen to Action event which inspired over 3,000 volunteers in November 2017 to pack 1,014,366 meals for their Pittsburgh community. Meals were packed using a system developed by the Meals of Hope organization and then delivered to those in need through the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The event sold out and broke records for packing the most meals in one day in a single location. Amen to Action was founded by a group of Pittsburgh clergy and lay leaders with the shared vision: to connect people of all faiths, creating a platform of harmony, and amassing spiritual capital more potent than all the coal in the hills and steel in the mills - and in so doing, lead Pittsburgh to become a spiritual power plant for the rest of the world. The Amen to Action team invites the community of Pittsburgh to register and/or donate to the second annual Amen to Action event taking place on Friday, November 23rd at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. For more details visit https://www.amentoaction.org.

We kindly ask you to please clip Box Tops for Education coupons and help make a difference at our school. Please clip your Box Tops, which are located on hundreds of products, and place them in the designated container found in the church narthex. They quickly add up to earn real cash for our school. We appreciate your support! GOD S LAWS God s laws are not intended to burden or torment us. Instead they are guideposts that point us in the direction of good living. Accordingly, good living requires loving God and loving one another. We should not follow God s laws out of fear of what might happen if we don t, but rather view them as a foundation for building relationships and trust with one another and with God. The Shema prayer of Orthodox Jews is based on the reading from Deuteronomy today, Hear, O Israel. Every morning people recite the prayer as a profession of their love for God and pledge their obedience to God throughout the day. They pass on their love of God to their children, from one generation to the next. Copyright J.S. Paluch Co., Inc. MUSIC MINISTRY NEWS LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR We hear the same words today in the first reading and the Gospel, so we know that they must be important. In Deuteronomy, the words are put in the mouth of Moses: Love God with your entire being. In Mark, Jesus repeats these words in answering the faithful scribe. But then he goes further, quoting Leviticus: Love your neighbor as yourself. What an appropriate time to reflect on these words as we come together with our neighbors through On Mission! NEW GATHER HYMNALS You ve probably noticed by now that all four churches have new Gather hymnals. It was necessary to get all four churches into the same common hymnal for use at liturgies. Plus, two of our churches were using Ritual Song hymnals that pre-dated the Roman Missal revision and still contained the old language. Gather is the newest hymnal edition available since the Roman Missal revision. You will soon have opportunities to memorialize these hymnals at all four buildings. Permanent bookplates will be installed inside the front cover with hymnal dedications. You will be able to personally dedicate hymnals in memory of someone who has passed, in honor of someone who is living, in celebration of a particular milestone event, or in thanksgiving for an answered prayer request. There will be several options available. This is such an appropriate time since November is traditionally set aside by the Church as the month of remembrance of our beloved dead. Stay tuned for more information.
