HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Fifth Sunday of Easter May 14, 2017 Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them. The needs of the early church were not different from those of our day. The text from the Acts of the Apostles informs us of the call by the apostles and the acceptance of the deacons to respond and serve at table. In many parts of our country men will be ordained to the diaconate and the priesthood as they are called to Holy Orders. The mission is the same, to serve and preach the word. The mandate is no different, but in the words of Pope Francis they are to go out to the marginalized and bring the word of Jesus to others. How many of us just accept our ordained ministers, but how few of us promote vocations to the service of the church. How many of us affirm those who are in ministry and how few consider the call of the Lord, whether in ordained or ministry of service. Jesus, the way, and the truth and the life calls us as His disciples to minister and serve. What is He asking me to do? CHURCH OF ST. DENIS Reverend William J. P. Lago, Pastor Rev. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION BLESSINGS To all our St. Denis children who received their Sacrament of First Holy Communion this Saturday, May 13 th, congratulations! What a truly Blessed day for the children & their families! As Jesus said on the night He gave us His precious Body & Blood: My Flesh is the true food, & My Blood is the true drink. If you eat my Flesh & drink my Blood, you are one with Me, & I am one with you. Just as the living Father sent Me & I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on Me will have life because of Me. John 6:55-57 The anticipation on the children s faces & the beautiful innocence in their outstretched hands to receive Jesus for the first time, could not help but touch the hearts of everyone present. A very special & heartfelt thank you to all their teachers & parents who helped them to prepare for this truly holy & sacred Sacrament. God Bless them all! I join with all your children as we pray: Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless all mothers, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen. May 15 th is the feast of St. Isidore the Farmer. Born in Madrid, Spain, about 1070, he worked in the fields when he was barely old enough to wield a hoe. St. Isidore was married, to St. Maria de la Cabeza, and had a deep prayer life; rising early in the morning to go to church and during his work day he prayed/communed with God. He is patron saint of farmers and rural communities. I ask his prayers as we embark on a new endeavor, a Community Garden. This week, I met with a few members of the local Ministerium churches to plant the seed of an ecumenical effort to grow vegetables for the St. Denis and Manasquan Presbyterian food pantries. Begun as an Eagle Scout project in honor of his grandmother, I suggested land to the east of the garages and behind the convent (it was the first thing I thought of for that land the first day I arrived at the parish!). We are in need of a few adults to help get things ready; come by the garden 5:30 pm on Monday the 15th (St. Isidore s Day!) or Saturday the 20 th at 9:30 am. Plan for a good hour or so of work alongside, and learn tips from, master Gardeners from our local churches. BYOS bring your own shovel (we do have a few too). VINCENT DE PAUL In the Gospel today, Jesus says whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. Through your almsgiving you are performing a good work; far greater than you think. The donations given to the St. Vincent de Paul Society bring Christ's love and compassion to the poor. The month of May is devoted to Mary, the Blessed Mother of Jesus. Also, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has a great devotion to Mary. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you. For Vincentians, authentic Marian spirituality must be nourished from a personal and genuine encounter with Mary in the Gospel, in the spirit of St. Vincent and Blessed Frederic. From the establishment of the first Confraternity of Charity at Chatillon-les- Dombes in 1617, Vincent de Paul proposed Mary as the patroness and protector of the work. Vincent suggested Mary as model : being obedient to the will of God, modest, discreet, without sin, humble, perfect, full of grace, poor, persevering, and servant of the Lord. Frederic insisted that the Society take Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception as its patroness. The first members of the Society chose December 8 th as their special Marian feast. To this day, Vincentians implore Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, their patroness, to intercede for their Councils and Conferences, and their lives and ministry. Our next general meeting will be Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 7:00 pm in Msgr. O'Connor Hall. The St. Denis Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has its general meetings at 7:00 pm, the first and third Tuesdays of every month. All are welcome to attend.
