PRESENTATION OF THE GRADUATE HOODING CEREMONY HOODING Bishop John R. Bryant, DMin Bro. Charles Craig, JD RESPONDING LITANY Stewards: Lord, we have heard your call as lay leaders to become a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. We have heard your call to be agents of justice, reconciliation, and compassion - caring for the sick, the downhearted, those in crisis or in need of a kind word. Like Jacob, we have wrestled with you as a stranger in the night, refusing to let go without a blessing. We have welcomed those whom You have ordained to preach to us and teach us so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Pastor (Graduate): Send me to the work of community organizing, educating and empowering others, while answering the Gospel s call to stand for the rights of the few in the face of great challenges. Send me to the work of congregational ministry, as God breathes new life into the Church, remembering the traditions of the past and embracing imminent reformation, always aware of the Holy Spirit s presence in our midst. Send me to futures unknown, certain only of your call on my life, trusting your voice to lead me, your Spirit to guide me, and your provision to keep me. Bishop (Mentor): I have walked with Pastor Williams for the past three years, and I am confident that the work he is doing will bring us all ever closer to God s beloved community. Pastor Williams has developed a deeper understanding of liberation theology, both preaching and praxis.
Community Leaders and Friends of Bethel: We come to show our appreciation for how Pastor Williams not only prays for us and our community, but also works tirelessly for the less fortunate among us. We join the voices to affirm his call and celebrate with him, we also say yes to the shared responsibility of continued encouragement and discernment, and we say yes to surrounding him always with our support and our prayers for Bethel and Spring Street Community Development Corp. Pastor s Family: We have watched from near and far over these three years, as our pastor, husband and father worked long days and late nights for the answers to life s hardest questions. We know full well what it means to support and encourage him. As we affirm his call and celebrate with him, we say yes to the shared responsibility of continued encouragement and discernment, and we say yes to surrounding him always with our love and our prayers no matter where ministry might take him. Context Associates: Holy God, having encountered you here, we trust that you are with us always. We add our YES to the YES you first put in each of our hearts, the YES that draws us near to you and calls each of us to lives of faith and ministry. Amen. PRAYERS OF THE CONGREGATION Rev. ABSTRACT DISCOVERING SACRED PATHWAYS FOR SPIRITUAL HEALING AND RENEWAL IN THE AMEC: A COMMUNAL MODEL FOR PASTORAL CARE IN THE 21ST CENTURY by Sidney S. Williams, Jr. DMIN, Payne Theological Seminary, 2018 BBA, Howard University, 1990 MBA, University Pennsylvania, 1994 MDiv., Wesley Theological Seminary, 2008 MENTORS John R. Bryant, DMin Raymond Hammond, MD This dissertation affirms the historical significance of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC), while exploring the ongoing tensions between ecclesiology and mission within local congregations. Using Bethel AMEC of Morristown, New Jersey (Bethel Morristown) as a case study, the author theorizes congregations that prioritize communal approaches to pastoral care in congregational life affirm the humanity and the spiritual gifts of every congregant. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am eternally grateful to the president of Payne Theological Seminary, the Reverend Dr. Michael Joseph Brown, the faculty and staff for such a life giving and transformative experience. I entered this program broken and uncertain about my future in the church, but every phase of this journey has been healing for my soul. Words cannot express my gratitude for the vice chair of the steward board, Marva Cole-Friday and my context associates at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Morristown, New Jersey (Bethel Morristown). Their insights were invaluable and truly helped to define the needs of the surrounding community and congregation. It is my sincere prayer that I will become a better pastor. To my mentors, the Right Reverend John R. Bryant, the 106th elected and consecrated bishop the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC), now retired, and the Reverend Dr. Raymond Hammond, an itinerant elder currently serving as pastor of Bethel AMEC in Boston, Massachusetts., thank you for the countless hours you have spent with me and many words of wisdom you have given me through this process. I will forever cherish our time together. To my cohort, thank you for the many shared meals and the rides to and from class. I will always hold dear the spiritual biographies we shared together. It is true that iron sharpens iron and I feel much sharper. I am especially appreciative of my home girl and peer associate, the Reverend A. Ayana Newtown for helping me get through my candidacy review and my final exam. To Dr. Arthur L. Pressley and Dr. Elias Ortega-Aponte, thank you for serving as my professional associates. The books you encouraged me to read and the words of encouragement you gave me throughout this process were invaluable. DEDICATION My beloved partner in life and love, Teresa E. Williams, thank you for your untiring love, support, and encouragement throughout this entire process. I am grateful for the space and time you have made available for me to pursue the calling on my life. I am so blessed to have such a phenomenal wife. In loving memory of my grandfather: Clarence John Williams, for giving me a model of manhood, marriage and ministry beyond the walls of the church. In loving remembrance of the first congregation that I pastored in Cape Town, South Africa, Agnes Hildebrand African Methodist Episcopal Church. Thank you for helping me to become the change I wanted to see. Lastly, to all of those who have entered the doors of our church hoping to discover sacred pathways for spiritual healing and renewal but did not find them: this work is for you. It is my sincere prayer that the church will become a place of healing for all those who dwell among us.
