THE ANGLICAN PARISH OF ST STEPHEN AND ST MARY MOUNT WAVERLEY WELCOME Transfiguration 19 February 2012 The first step to finding God, who is Truth, is to discover the truth about myself: and if I have been in error, the first step to truth is the discovery of my error. Thomas Merton

At Worship Today Prayer of the Day: Almighty God, whose Son was revealed in majesty before he suffered death upon the cross: give us faith to perceive his glory, that being strengthened by his grace we may be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 7.45 am (BCP) Book of Common Prayer: Presiding and Preaching: Mtr Jane Hymn: 143 10.30am Contemporary Eucharist Presiding: The Vicar Preaching: Mtr Jane The Sanctuary bell will be rung 5 minutes before the service begins to observe a time of quiet 9.00 am A Prayer Book for Australia - page 119 Presiding at the Eucharist: The Vicar Musical Setting: Eucharist Michael Dudman Introit: Hymn 212 Sentence: It is the God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. First Reading: 2 Kings 2.1, 7-12 Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 4.3-12 Sequence: Hymn: 243 Gospel: Mark 9.2-9 Sermon: Mtr Jane Offertory: Hymn 243 Recessional: Hymn 622 Holy Baptism (CE) Today Penelope Batten By Water and the Holy Spirit People of all Christian Churches, who are communicants in their own church, are invited to share Holy Communion with us

First Reading: 2 Kings 2.1, 7-12. 1 Now when the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 7 Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. 8 Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground. 9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you. Elisha said, Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit. 10 He responded, You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not. 11 As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. 12 Elisha kept watching and crying out, Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen! But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 4.3-12 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus sake. 6 For it is the God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7 But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us.. 8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. 11 For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. 12 So death is at work in us, but life in you. Gospel: Mark 9.2-9 2 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5 Then Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. 6 He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him! 8 Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus. 9 As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 9 As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

World Day of Prayer On Friday 2nd March 2012, more than 3 million people in over 170 countries and islands will be taking part in a globe-circling Day of Prayer. The International World Day of Prayer Committee states... "The worship services on this day are always inspiring. Like a global Mexican wave of prayer, the first service will begin at sunrise in Tonga, and move around the world until the sun sets in neighbouring Western Samoa. By then, the Day will have been celebrated in over 170 countries, and throughout Australia over 1300 services will have been held." This year the Service has been prepared by the Christian women of Malaysia, following the 2012 theme of... Let Justice Prevail... as found in the words of Psalm 33 vs 5 & 20-22 The Service focuses on the women of Malaysia. They rejoice and praise God when Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Christians and followers of other traditional religions can be found living in the same family and community. They pray for a just and integral development for everyone, knowing that women of all races and classes face discrimination and violence at all levels of their society. The ICC are offering two study programs: 1) The theme is FAST, PRAY, GIVE AND RECEIVE. The Resource offers suggestions for 4 group sessions in Lent. Historically, Lent has been a time of preparation for the blessings of the Easter season. It is hoped that Christians from different backgrounds will be able to come together to reflect on how Lent can still be meaningful today. The first session focuses on the concept of Lent itself. The following three sessions are devoted to three spiritual disciplines which have been traditionally associated with Lent: fasting, prayer and almsgiving. Scriptural passages, wisdom from the past, contemporary insights and questions for reflection will be offered where appropriate. Prepared by Josephine Laffin with assistance from Peter Burke, Philip Gardner and Geraldine Hawkes for the South Australian Council of Churches. Source: www.sacc.asn.au, and then enter Ecumenical Resources 2) THE HOPE OF A NEW HEAVEN & NEW EARTH - A Study on Christian Hope. Led by Rev Max Champion, this 6 week series of discussions starting in Lent, is being held at St John s Uniting Church, 37 Virginia St Mt Waverley. Focusing on the significance of Christ's resurrection for understanding creation, death and the future, it features brief DVD conversations between four Uniting Church ministers on key themes. Sign up sheets for both programs are in the Parish Centre. For more information about venues and times please contact David Strudwick via the Parish Office Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays during Lent Please note that the musical Hallelujah program as first advertised, will not be going ahead this year.
