Parashah Acharei Mot After the Death - Week 29 & Parashah Kedoshim Holy Week 30 TO BE HOLY The portion covers Leviticus 16:1-18:30; Ezekiel 22:1-16; Romans 3:19-28; 1 Corinthians 5:1-13; 1 Peter 1:13-21.! TO BE HOLY: THE COMMANDMENTS - A SET OF MINIMUM CRITERIA OR THE MAXIMUM LEVEL THAT WE ARE TO ACHIEVE? One of the problems with the interpretation of the WORD is that we have to decide on whether the Commandments are a target to be aimed at, or is it rather a case that this set of Commandments are merely the foundation of our relationship with GOD (YHVH), which we can either choose to do or not to do. The following three statements seem to define the space of the Covenant, and thereby also set the answer to our question in concrete. A) You shall keep My Commandments and live by them. Leviticus 18:5 You are to observe My Laws and rulings; if a person does them, he will have life through them; I am ADONAI. 2

This is probably the most difficult to understand. Somehow we are to be diligent in keeping the Commandments, BUT we are to do so with the express purpose/or desire of living. In other words, to NOT keep the Commandments means that we are in a process of dying. Critically, anything that is dead cannot be inside the Tabernacle, and consequently, cannot be intimate with GOD (YHVH). Every Commandment should be interpreted from the context of: how does this bring life!! Importantly, we gain life, NOT salvation. For this reason any thought to end life, to abort life, to cause depression and anxiety for anyone else, should be seen as the absolute opposite of GOD s WILL. 1) Sexual immodesty For this reason, a number of Commandments defined in terms of unacceptable sexual relations, fall into the category that reflect death - due to the obvious lack of meaningful intimacy that they describe. I do not think it necessary to list or discuss these individually, but you can read the full list in Leviticus 18:1-20. Importantly, these unacceptable deeds are NOT ONLY measured in their physical nature, but also in another very important attribute. Leviticus 18:1-5 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, I am the LORD your God. You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you lived, and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, to which I am bringing you. You shall not walk in their statutes. You shall follow My rules and keep My statutes and walk in them. I am the LORD your God. You shall therefore keep My statutes and My rules; if a person does them, he shall live by them: I am the LORD. We note that these actions are described as something which is the norm in both Egypt and Canaan and which are totally unacceptable to GOD (YHVH). It is vital to understand that these actions described bring about death in all forms of relationships. This death causes the loss of friends, ruins families, but also today causes the introduction of illnesses that have devastating consequences, with many orphan children suffering as a result. Firstly, purity in relationships is built on the basis of trust. Trust opens the door for shared intimacy, and long-term friendships. Secondly, impure sexual relations, not only break trust, but they destroy many other friendship, family relationships by building distrust, a lack of faith and general wounding. Short-term pleasure is being exchanged for death in long-term healthy relationships. 2) Man uses set- apart things for his own purposes Another reason why some of man s action (freedom of choice) can result in the loss of life/ blessing, is when we take something that has a unique /specific purpose as set aside by GOD (YHVH), and use it for our own benefit. I refer here to the Commandment of animal sacrifices - it had been set out and designed to be performed ONLY in specific circumstances, and in specific places. It was never GOD s intention that animals would be needlessly sacrificed to dead idols. 3

Leviticus 17:3-5 If any one of the house of Israel kills an ox or a lamb or a goat in the camp, or kills it outside the camp, and does not bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting to offer it as a gift to the LORD in front of the tabernacle of the LORD, bloodguilt shall be imputed to that man. He has shed blood, and that man shall be cut off from among his people. This is to the end that the people of Israel may bring their sacrifices that they sacrifice in the open field, that they may bring them to the LORD, to the priest at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and sacrifice them as sacrifices of peace offerings to the LORD. 3) Commandments must bring life However, when man turns Commandments into rituals, adds heavy fences and a critical eye with the sole intent to be on the lookout for an opportunity to bring judgment on fellowman, then WE ARE NO LONGER LIVING. Religious men (especially leadership) have made it their goal to define their own benchmarks that the ordinary man can never attain. The new standards are NEVER GOD s order, as can be seen in the many cases when Y shua engages in debates on the topic of the traditions of men. In all cases you will see that the actual intent has been radically altered. Here is one such example: Matthew 19:1-11 19 When Yeshua had finished talking about these things, he left the Galil and traveled down the east side of the Yarden River until he passed the border of Y hudah. 2 Great crowds followed him, and he healed them there. 3 Some P rushim came and tried to trap him by asking, Is it permitted for a man to divorce his wife on any ground whatever? 4 He replied, Haven t you read that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female,[a] 5 and that he said, For this reason a man should leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, and the two are to become one flesh?[b] 6 Thus they are no longer two, but one. So then, no one should split apart what God has joined together. 7 They said to him, Then why did Moshe give the commandment that a man should hand his wife a get and divorce her? [c] 8 He answered, Moshe allowed you to divorce your wives because your hearts are so hardened. But this is not how it was at the beginning. 9 Now what I say to you is that whoever divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery! 10 The talmidim said to him, If that is how things are between husband and wife, it would be better not to marry! 11 He said to them, Not everyone grasps this teaching, only those for whom it is meant. 4) Finally, it s some>mes hard for us to see the promise of Life in the Commandment. 4

Let s take for example the story of Abraham where he walks together with his son Isaac to the mountain, in order to make the sacrifice. When we are asked to do something, the solution is not always in sight. Often, you and I will need to keep these Commandments by FAITH, knowing that GOD (YHVH) will provide the ram that we need in our walk with Him. B) You shall be holy because I am Holy. Leviticus 19:2 Speak to the entire community of Isra el; tell them, You people are to be holy because I, ADONAI your God, am holy. The Scripture above is an opening statement given to a set-apart people that will define their purpose and potential. In fact, a statement that is non-negotiable. It is possible. And to make sure that we understand and see the opportunity, we are given the instructions on how to approach the Feast of Yom Kippur. Leviticus 16:29-34 It is to be a permanent regulation for you that on the tenth day of the seventh month you are to deny yourselves and not do any kind of work, both the citizen and the foreigner living with you. For on this day, atonement will be made for you to purify you; you will be clean before ADONAI from all your sins. It is a Shabbat of complete rest for you, and you are to deny yourselves. This is a permanent regulation. The cohen anointed and consecrated to be cohen in his father s place will make the atonement; he will put on the linen garments, the holy garments; he will make atonement for the Especially Holy Place; he will make atonement for the tent of meeting and the altar; and he will make atonement for the cohanim and for all the people of the community. This is a permanent regulation for you, to make atonement for the people of Isra el because of all their sins once a year. Moshe did as ADONAI had ordered him. We see that our sins can be forgiven!! Not by the blood of the sacrifice, but by a contrite heart, and by the gift of Life from a loving Father. This is a two-step process: The step of forgiveness - kappara meaning covering over AND The step of cleansing tahara meaning purification. What we see is the following There must be recognition of the sin. There must be remorse for the effects of the sinful actions. There must be a commitment to change. Have you ever considered the following? 1) All of the offers/sacrifices, peace offering, and so forth, are all made on the altar at the Tabernacle. 5

However, the SIN OFFERING was made outside of the camp. It is here where the red heifer is offered to cover this sin. Why is this so important? Because it is the opposite of man s own attempts. Mankind was offering goats to the kingdom of darkness, in a manmade attempt to appease the gods. Leviticus 17:7 No longer will they offer sacrifices to the goat-demons, before whom they prostitute themselves! This is a permanent regulation for them through all their generations. No sin can enter into the Tabernacle EVER!!! 2) The people gathered to watch the goat being led away into the wilderness. Why? We are people blessed with the gift of FREEDOM OF CHOICE. By watching the goat, we can look, think, AND decide exactly how we are going to live during the following year. **NUGGET!** No one that has watched the goat walk away can say: if only I had known where my thoughts/actions would lead me!!!!! And having seen that the way to return has been defined for us, and with the resurrection of the Messiah as guarantee for a better Priesthood, we can look at the sins for which no sacrifice was available under the Order of Levi. It s here that the decision to exercise our freedom of choice becomes a matter of life or death. These actions by man are equaled to death, and need the atonement for by the red heifer - atonement fulfilled by the death/resurrection of the Messiah. 1) Idolatry Leviticus 19:4 Do not turn to idols, and do not cast metal gods for yourselves; I am ADONAI your God. Leviticus 20:6 The person who turns to spirit-mediums and sorcerers to go fornicating after them I will set myself against him and cut him off from his people. 2) Murder Leviticus 18:21 You are not to let any of your children be sacrificed to Molekh, thereby profaning the Name of your God; I am ADONAI. Leviticus 20:1-5 ADONAI said to Moshe, Say to the people of Isra el, If someone from the people of Isra el or one of the foreigners living in Isra el sacrifices one of his children to Molekh, he must be put to death; the people of the land are to stone him to death. I too will set myself against him and cut him off from his people, because he has sacrificed his child to Molekh, defiling My sanctuary and profaning My Holy Name. If the people of the land look the other way when that man sacrifices his child to Molekh and fail to put him to death, then I will set myself against him, his family and everyone who follows him to go fornicating after Molekh, and cut them off from their people. 6

3) Sexual PERVERSION/immorality Leviticus 18:22-23 You are not to go to bed with a man as with a woman; it is an abomination. 23 You are not to have sexual relations with any kind of animal and thus become unclean with it; nor is any woman to present herself to an animal to have sexual relations with it; it is perversion. C) You shall do what is right and good Why is it so hard to accept that keeping the Commandments are not heavy, not law, not a burden, but is defined as good by GOD (YHVH)? Interestingly, a word used to describe the result of many of the days of creation. Deuteronomy 6:18 You are to do what is right and good in the sight of ADONAI, so that things will go well with you, and you will enter and possess the good land ADONAI swore to your ancestors. There are many people who try to argue that these Commandments are all a thing of the past. Those same people will often argue that we live in the dispensation of grace. What is so strange is that so many of these Commandments are ethical values that any decent human being would ascribe to So the question is why do we want to take away the responsibility? And so we try to motivate things this way and that way. AS LONG AS WE DO NOT HAVE TO DO ANYTHING!!! Unfortunately, Y shua comes with a simple Commandment that encompasses all of these moral/ethical principles. LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOUR!!! Paul tells us it s the old man that is trying hard to get these Commandments removed. Any attempt to do away with the Commandments is my own ego/old man. Note what Paul says The old man leads to death. Galatians 5:13-26 For, brothers, you were called to be free. Only do not let that freedom become an excuse for allowing your old nature to have its way. Instead, serve one another in love. For the whole of the Torah is summed up in this one sentence: Love your neighbor as yourself ; but if you go on snapping at each other and tearing each other to pieces, watch out, or you will be destroyed by each other! What I am saying is this: run your lives by the Spirit. Then you will not do what your old nature wants. For the old nature wants what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit wants what is contrary to the old nature. These oppose each other, so that you find yourselves unable to carry out your good intentions. But if you are led by the Spirit, then you are not in subjection to the system that results from perverting the Torah into legalism. And it is perfectly evident what the old nature does. It expresses itself in sexual immorality, impurity and indecency; idol-worship and misuse of drugs in connection with the occult; in feuding, fighting, becoming jealous and getting angry; in selfish ambition, factionalism, intrigue and envy; in drunkenness, orgies and things like these. I warn you now as I have warned you before: those who do such things will have no share in the Kingdom of God! 7

And if you think it is only Paul that saw through this game - what about the man and the story of the Good Samaritan?! Luke 10:29-30 29 But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Yeshua, And who is my neighbor? 30 Taking up the question, Yeshua said: A man was going down from Yerushalayim to Yericho when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him naked and beat him up, then went off, leaving him half dead. What we see here is the man tries very hard to define the neighbour to a small circle of people as he can. He is trying to keep the Commandment, BUT in his OWN way. Luke 1:31-37 31 Look! You will become pregnant, you will give birth to a Son, and you are to name Him Yeshua. 32 He will be great, He will be called Son of Ha Elyon. Adonai, God, will give Him the throne of His forefather David; 33 and He will rule the House of Ya akov forever there will be no end to His Kingdom. 34 How can this be, asked Miryam of the angel, since I am a virgin? 35 The angel answered her, The Ruach HaKodesh will come over you, the power of Ha Elyon will cover you. Therefore the Holy Child born to you will be called the Son of God. 36 You have a relative, Elisheva, who is an old woman; and everyone says she is barren. But she has conceived a son and is six months pregnant! 37 For with God, nothing is impossible. SO WHAT SHOULD WE DO? Read the Commandments with an open mind. Ask yourself how these would be applicable today. Be a Light to the world reveal GOD s character!!! Let s take two examples: 8

1) Leave something for the poor Leviticus 19:9 When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. Consider this You are not the owner of the land GOD (YHVH) gave you, i.e. talents and gifts. And the poor still have rights to the fruit of the Land (to your talents/gifts). You don t need to accumulate it all, and the poor should still work for what they are going to get 2) As children we are to (a) honor our parents and (b) we are to fear them. Leviticus 19:3 Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and you shall keep my Sabbaths: I am the LORD your God. CONSIDER THIS: You honour when you look after parents when they are old. And you obey your parents when they give Godly direction. CONCLUSION GOD (YHVH) is always interested in restoration. Those who choose to follow His ways will be reinstated. Amos 9:7-15 In that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen and repair its breaches, and raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old, that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations who are called by My Name, declares the LORD who does this. 13 Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when the plowman shall overtake the reaper and the treader of grapes him who sows the seed; the mountains shall drip sweet wine, and all the hills shall flow with it. 14 I will restore the fortunes of My people Israel, and they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine, and they shall make gardens and eat their fruit. 15 I will plant them on their land, and they shall never again be uprooted out of the land that I have given them, says the LORD your God. 9
