DIOCESAN SYNOD SATURDAY 9 MARCH 2019 DIOCESAN SYNOD 01/19 WELCOMES & OPENING PRAYER 1

Hearts on Fire prayer Stay with us Lord, open our eyes and set our hearts on fire, as you open your word, as you break your bread, as we live your life. Enrich us with your grace, empower us by your Spirit, enfold us in your love, as we walk the journey of faith with you. Amen DIOCESAN SYNOD 02/19 ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICES 2

DIOCESAN SYNOD 04/19 SOUTHWARK VISION EVENTS All are welcome, so please bring a group from your parish and hear local people tell some of the exciting stories of life and growth in the Deaneries. 4

We will also discuss the Diocesan Vision and some of the strategic seeds that have been and are being planted. So do come, whether to share your vision, to listen to others stories, to ask your questions or give thanks to God. Archdeacon John Kiddle: We want to come together locally to celebrate the growth that God is giving and the generous investment of love, prayer, time, imagination and money, which has made this possible. 5

The venues in each Archdeaconry, dates and times are listed on the Diocesan website. If you are not able to attend your local meeting you are very welcome at any of the other meetings 6

Southwark Vision A culmination of objectives into A Fruitful Future Being realised through: Walking with Jesus and getting to know Jesus better as we journey on Welcoming all, embracing our diversity and seeking new ways of being church Growing in numbers, generosity, faith and discipleship as we grow God's Kingdom 10

The Mission Action Planning process is a key means for ensuring that the Diocese as a whole is working towards our vision and mission Strategic Objectives for Growth to grow our average weekly attendance by 5% by 2025 partly through having each church develop a high-quality Mission Action Plan (MAP) which includes a course for evangelism and discipleship. 11

How are we Doing? In our parishes: 66% of parishes have MAPs. 21% are known to be up to date. 34% of parishes don t currently have a MAP. 12

Finding the greater Yes through MAP The Healthy Churches Handbook, by Robert Warren, this list identifies common characteristics of healthy churches. 7. Does a few things and do them well Growth in spiritual depth Growth in number Growth in Community impact, including care for creation 13

Mission Action Planning focused upon The Five Marks of mission. 14

Have a look at the leaflet: How is your parish engaging in the Marks of Mission? What could it do? Here to help/ learn with your parish/ community. Members of the Mission and Evangelism Team Area Mission Enablers Members of the JPIC Team 15

Next Steps Does your parish have a MAP? Does it guide the parishes thinking on mission priorities & is it referred to when the PCC meets? Does it need reviewing/ creating? What can the Mission Team do to That the world may taste and see the the LORD is good! offer help in working with you? Next Steps Let us know about your MAP through email & a simple online return. Let JPIC & the Mission Team support and accompany you as you fulfil God s mission and bring in His Kingdom. That the world may taste and see the the LORD is good! 16

DIOCESAN SYNOD 04/19 DEANERY LEADERSHIP TEAMS Breathing new life into Deaneries How to implement Southwark vision in Deaneries? Local freedom. Not one size fits all. 17

Focus on mission. Go where Spirit is working. Support the Area Deans/ Lay Chairs Deanery Leadership Teams First wave of seven deanery teams are going to be commissioned. Guinea Pigs, represent whole Diocese 18

And next. Next wave of up to 5 deaneries in September 30 people on team building days already Background progress Area Dean handbook nearly complete Lay Chair handbook to follow 19

Support of hierarchy Archdeacons to commission Teams. Bishops looking at form of words. Other support Support for admin costs for Area Deans/Lay chairs and other officers. Training and resourcing for critical friends to accompany the Deaneries on their journeys. 20

Blessing Bishop Christopher has made it clear that mission activities in Deaneries should not be constrained by synodical structures and processes, but rather that we should all look to create space for the Holy Spirit to stir us with imagination and creativity towards the task of mission in our areas. DIOCESAN SYNOD 04/19 FRESH EXPRESSIONS 21

What is a fresh expression? A fresh expression is a form of church for our changing culture established primarily for the benefit of people who are not yet members of any church. 15 Church from the valley baptism education marriage festivals Sunday sickness crisis bereavement death The mission task: From door, to font or baptistery, to communion table or altar, out to the world 11 22

DIOCESAN SYNOD 05/19 REPORT FROM THE GENERAL SYNOD DIOCESAN SYNOD 06/19 REIGATE DEANERY SYNOD MOTION KNIFE CRIME 33

1. This Synod encourages each church therefore: a. to support those who have been bereaved and those who are emotionally vulnerable as a result of gun and knife crime. b. to recognise that our response to violent crime in our communities is a public health issue and that children involved, as perpetrators and victims, require a safeguarding and trauma informed response. Trauma affects the whole community and demands a whole community response. We look to churches to build relationships with external as well as other church organisations to offer this response. c. to work with the police and others in providing pastoral care for those targeted as vulnerable through County Lines, through strategic intervention work across our parochial networks. 2. 2. This Synod therefore calls upon Southwark Diocese to develop strategies to facilitate, resource and implement such engagement: a. through support for our schools, especially within urban environments. We recognise the issue of excluded young people being at higher risk of involvement in serious youth violence, and we seek to support the reduction of exclusions in our schools. In addition, we recognise the role that church youth workers and other ministers play, we seek to prioritise services which support children and young people at risk. b. by ensuring that The Diocesan website contains information concerning the occurrence of violent crime in the Diocese; online signposting for support and counselling for those affected; pointers as to how to respond if such violent crime takes place within the parish or deanery worked in conjunction with the police; c. through providing training for clergy and lay leaders on understanding risk factors and identifying signs of vulnerability to county lines involvement including safeguarding responses within parishes. 34

The amendment proposed to clause 2 is as follows: Replace Southwark Diocese to develop strategies to facilitate, resource and implement such engagement: with all Dioceses, working with the Mission and Public Affairs Council, to develop strategies to facilitate engagement and resources: 1. 35
