God of mercy, whose presence sustains us in every circumstance, in the midst of unfolding violence and the aftermath of terror and loss, we seek the grounding power of your love and compassion. In these days of fearful danger and division, we need to believe somehow that your kingdom of peace in which all nations and tribes and languages dwell together in peace is still a possibility. Give us hope and courage that we may not yield our humanity to fear.., even in these endless days of dwelling in the valley of the shadow of death. We pray for neighbors in Paris, in Beirut, in Baghdad, who, in the midst of the grace of ordinary life--while at work, or at play, have been violently assaulted, their lives cut off without mercy. We also remember Burundi and South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo and Yemen and Syria and the Central African Republic and the United States and all places where violence recently occurred that did not make the news. We are hostages of fear, caught in an escalating cycle of violence whose end cannot be seen. We open our hearts in anger, sorrow and hope: that those who have been spared as well as those whose lives are changed forever may find solace, sustenance, and strength in the days of recovery and reflection that come. We give thanks for strangers who comfort the wounded and who welcome stranded strangers, for first responders who run toward the sound of gunfire and into the smoke and fire of bombing sites. Once again, Holy One, we cry, how long, O Lord? We seek forgiveness for the ways in which we have tolerated enmity and endured cultures of violence with weary resignation. We grieve the continued erosion of the fabric of our common life, the reality of fear that warps the common good. We pray in grief, remembering the lives that have been lost and maimed, in body or spirit. We ask for sustaining courage for those who are suffering; wisdom and diligence among global and national agencies and individuals assessing threat and directing relief efforts; and for our anger and sorrow to unite in service to the establishment of a reign of peace, where the lion and the lamb may dwell together, and terror will not hold sway over our common life. In these days of shock and sorrow, open our eyes, our hearts, and our hands to the movements of your Spirit, who flows in us like the river whose streams makes glad the city of God, and the hearts of all who dwell in it, and in You. In the name of Christ, our healer and our Light, we pray, Amen. Prayer by the Rev. Dr. Laurie Ann Kraus, Coordinator, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PCUSA) Charge Conference Reminder: If your conference was prior to November 10, please complete your online submittal by November 22! Any questions/concerns, please email Amy at ahaines@wocumc.org.

Pastor and Church Profiles Last week an email/letter was sent out asking every pastor and every Staff/Pastor-Parish Relations Committee in the West Ohio Conference to complete a new profile for the Cabinet. Please try and complete the forms by December 15 th. Completing this form does not mean that you desire a move. Those who have requested a move have already contacted the district office. Think of it instead as another tool in the Cabinet toolbox when they begin to make appointments and have to consider moves that have not been requested-- they no longer have to rely solely on memory! We ask that you give an honest snapshot of your ministry/your congregation. These profiles will then be updated every year. The reservation deadline for the Clergy and Spouse/ Guest Christmas Gathering is November 20th. RESOURCES Discovering Your Call to Ministry Web Class starts January 11 Offered January 11, 2016 - February 7, 2016. Do you know someone who has the nagging feeling there is something more that God wants them to do besides, teach Sunday school, lead worship, be on the church board, or sit in the pew? Share the class that has helped others discover their call to ministry. Weekly assignments which help students explore their call and gifts to ministry can be done at a time that is convenient and meets their schedule. At the end of the course students will be able to share their gifts and call to ministry. The guide and instructor over the four weeks is Carl Ellis an ordained pastor in the United Methodist Church, who has taught and mentored hundreds of lay persons moving into new forms of ministry. Rev. Dr. Carl K. Ellis, Lay Academy for Rural church Ministries, cellis@larcm.org, www.larcm.org. United Methodist Student Day November 29 Digital Advertising Grants for Easter Rethink Church is now accepting applications for their 2016 Easter Digital Advertising Grants. This grant is for local churches who want to raise awareness of their church in the community by means of online digital advertising during the Easter season. These ads will link directly to the church website and will be geo-targeted to each church s community. The grant provides pre-designed static banners that display a seasonal Rethink Church message, the Rethink Church logo, the UMC brand promise and the local church logo. If a church does not have a logo, they can create a brand standard logo for them. The ads will run for two months (February March 2016). A church may see their ads on websites as large as CNN and The Weather Channel as well as on local news websites. They also provide a follow-up report on click through rates and site visits to each church from the advertising period. Click here for the FAQ that should help answer questions about the digital grant process. Visit their website HERE http:// www.umcom.org/services-products/digital-advertising-grants to learn more about our selection criteria and to apply. Deadline to apply is January 7, 2016! Grants are awarded on a first come, first served basis. Churches can only be awarded one grant type of any kind once per year. United Methodist Student Day calls the Church to support students as they prepare for life in uniting faith with knowledge. (Par. 263.4, The Book of Discipline 2008) Offerings provide scholarships and loans to deserving United Methodist students. Here are sermon starters, talking points and other resources to help inspire your congregation to share their gifts on Student Day. http:// www.umcgiving.org/resource-articles/united-methodist-student-daypastors-leaders-kit
