Deputy Grand Knight s Report: THE COMPASS Newsletter of the Knights of Columbus Fr. Michael Cottrell Council 7672 St. Francis of Assisi Parish Grove City, Florida April 2018 - Easter Season Brothers, March has slipped away, and another Lenten Season has come and gone. Please pray for those who were in the latest RCIA Class and who become Catholics at the Easter Vigil. If you have never attended The Easter Vigil Mass, I encourage you to try to make it next year; it really is a wonderful and impressive celebration to be a part of. On March 12 th the Knights and Ladies Auxiliary hosted the soup supper. We had 18 soups to share, with a wide variety of flavors. Thank you to all the Ladies and Knights who brought soup. They all looked very delicious. I would also like to thank Gerry Chesney and the woman s guild for setting up these soup suppers. We had a pancake breakfast on March 11 th, it was very well attended, and we were able to have breakfast with our fellow Parishioners and make new friends. As you look at our upcoming calendar, we have a pancake breakfast on April 8 th and a spaghetti dinner on April 17 th. The spaghetti dinner is on a Tuesday for the Religious Education Families. Keep in mind that we still need help for these events. Without teamwork, none of these events would be possible. March 15 th, 16 th and 17 th was another Tootsie roll drive, thank you Brother Gil Ulrich and all who participated with your time and talents. I know Gil appreciates it very much. On May 6 th at 3:00 PM the Knights of Columbus and our St. Francis of Assisi Parish, along with East Englewood Church of Christ, Faith Lutheran Church, First Baptist Church, Lemon Bay Church of Christ, Living Hope Church of God, Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, St. David s Episcopal Church, Westcoast Church and Placida Road Church of God will be sponsoring an Ecumenical Prayer Service for all retired and active first responders in our area at our Parish. Please, if you know of any neighbors, friends, relatives that are first responders, retired or active, be sure to invite them to this Prayer Service. It would be great to fill the church with first responders, and most importantly let them know that we appreciate and support what they do for our community. SEE POSTER AND INVITATION LETTER PP. 13 14 continued... 1

I would like to request that if you haven t joined the Father McGivney Guild to please do so. Also, please persuade your family and friends to join the Guild too. It is not restricted to just Knights. The more people that join the Guild and learn more about Father McGivney and his life, the more that are apt to pray for his canonization. There are three ways to help change the world: with your words, with your deeds, and with your prayer. As Catholics we should always try to do our best by practicing all three ways. Pray for those in need. Help those that are less fortunate than us. But always try to remember that we all have our own struggles in life. I hope everyone had a chance to celebrate Easter with your families and loved ones. Vivat Jesus, John Dean, DGK My Brother Knights Request from the Past Grand Knight: You received in the mail this past week an envelope with the following printed on the outside. BROTHER KNIGHTS ARE A PEOPLE OF LIFE Inside the envelope you will find return address labels and a great magnet for your car or fridge. Please purchase and use these labels to show that you are supporting LIFE from Conception to natural death. Any donation you can make would be appreciated. GOD BLESS..... CHUCK PGN 2

------ NOTES FROM THE K OF C LADIES AUXILIARY: March has been a quiet month with few activities for the Ladies Auxiliary as we have traveled through our Lenten Journey in preparation for Easter. April 4 th is our night at Visani s Comedy Club, our largest fundraiser of the year. This is always an enjoyable night out with the Knights and the ladies. We are planning a bake sale to be held at the pancake breakfast on Sunday, April 22 nd. This will be another way to earn some funds to give to our charities in May. Election of officers will take place at the upcoming April meeting. The year is winding down fast and soon it will be summer when many of our ladies head back up north to be with families. Those of us who will remain here will start our preparation for the upcoming year. Margaret Posey Bauer, Ladies Auxiliary President Spotlight....... by Trudi Ryan Anyone who has attended Council 7672 social functions and vied for the coveted Baskets that our Ladies raffle off during the festivities has seen the handiwork of Flo Hughes, our first member of the Ladies Auxiliary to be featured in this new column titled Spotlight to appear monthly in the Auxiliary section of the Compass. Flo Hughes, having moved here from Grand Blanc, MI in 1995 with Richard her husband is celebrating 57 years of marriage!!. She states that she was raised on a farm in Warren MI and graduated from Immaculata High School in Detroit. She says she was lucky enough to be a stay-at-home Mom to six kids. And now she has 14 grand children and 2 and ½ (?) great grandchildren. We ll have to check back to see when and where to find that half!! Listed as her current hobbies: golf, crochet, water aerobics and living her life to the fullest!! She involves herself with our Knights of Columbus and the Parish Guild, is a Eucharistic Minister and works the Pancake Breakfasts and the Spaghetti Dinners for the Ladies Auxiliary. She IS the Basket Lady!!!... and a very good one at that. 3

Hopefully, our Council, the Assembly and our Ladies Auxiliary will look into the options for members and their families to have an opportunity to see this highly acclaimed film. The Knights of Columbus nationally has endorsed this film and recommends that viewing the film which is dedicated to the persecuted Christians of today will help to spread awareness of their plight. Watch for further updates. Larry Norton, Director of Family & Culture of Life 9

Special Message from Our Knights of Columbus Field Agent: Brothers and Sisters, The last few months have been very busy. I have had a lot of new Long Term Care and Term Life Insurance policies being requested. A handful of formerly declined members have resubmitted for life insurance and been approved. A lot of members are funding single premium whole life policies because of the guaranteed growth in cash value as well as the additional income in the event of an early demise. It s a great time to invest in products that have a guaranteed minimum interest rate. Take a look to see if you have one of the old 3.0% or 3.5% guaranteed minimum rate annuities, some of our members have forgotten that they purchased those when they joined the Knights years ago. And if you don t have an annuity you can purchase one with a guaranteed minimum interest rate. We are currently providing a 2.5% rate of return. We have had two new members join simply for the Term Life Insurance that we provide. The new E-Member program is a great way to get your kids protected with the Knights of Columbus. They also receive material that encourages them to grow in their faith and to step up to being a better man. Unfortunately I ve also been very busy with funerals and claims. Please do your loved ones a favor and get your affairs in order. It is heartbreaking to meet with a widow or widower and they have no clue about any of the financial affairs of the house, they don t have the passwords to the online accounts, or they don t know about your investments or insurances (including medical, car, house, etc.). Let s get together and go over a simple checklist with you and your loved one and go over these things. It will help your family in the event of a death. Please give me a call, I will make time to take care of you and your family. Ask around and you will have plenty of testimony that I m looking out for your best interests and want to make sure that your family is protected. May God bless you, your family and your efforts. Knights Welcome RCIA Candidates Holy Saturday: On this day, our candidates in the RCIA program at St. Francis of Assisi will be received into full communion with the Catholic church, during the solemn celebration of the Easter Vigil. They will come into full communion through their reception of the sacraments of Adult Baptism, Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist. In recognition of this most holy and joyous turning point in their lives, officers and members of our Knights of Columbus Council welcomed them at the church and presented them each with a Holy Bible. At the conclusion of the welcome they also received a blessing from Father York. 12

Ecumenical Prayer Service for First Responders: Please make copies of the Invitation Letter on page 14 and give them to your friends and acquaintances who are ACTIVE or RETIRED first responders. This is a major undertaking of your Council and we need your support both in Inviting and Attending this service. Thank You 13

Report from Our Financial Secretary: Each year the Council is required to submit an accounting of our Fraternal Activity. This information is very important to the Good of the Order. We need each and every Brother Knight to faithfully report his volunteer hours each year, which along with the report of every other Brother Knight constitutes an accounting of our annual work. The form below is used to accomplish this task. Since it is difficult come up with this information from memory for previous months we are publishing the form for your use as you go through the year. Please print out the form contained on Page 16. Keep it at hand for use throughout the year. Keeping the original copy to use as a Master and making a new copy for next month s use on a monthly basis would be ideal for tracking your monthly hours and then making an accurate summary report for year end submission. Thank you for your attention to this request. Submitted on behalf of Ed Wilson PLEASE PRINT THE ANNUAL SURVEY REPORT FORM ON PAGE 16, 15
