3PK April 13-14, 2013 The Holy Spirit Luke 24, John 20, Acts 1 God sent the Holy Spirit to be our special helper SCHEDULE for all sites: First 10 minutes of the service hour: Relationship-building time (kids get to know each other and the volunteers) Help kids clean up their stuff. Make it fun. Tell them each to pick up 10 items, or act like you re a robot while picking up, or come up with your own creative idea to engage them in clean-up. Next 25 minutes: Large group teaching and worship Last 30 minutes: Story review, snack and small groups, activities/crafts If you finish early, have kids engage group games as parents arrive. Check out the end of the activities section to find an idea for this week Remind kids to tell their parents why they are taking home a pinwheel. Today, we re learning about the story about Pentecost, when God sent the Holy Spirit to live in us and help us follow Him. Read Acts 2 to prepare to teach it to kids.

Goal: to review the most important event in today s story: the Holy Spirit s arrival Why? We want kids to be able to have fun retelling this story to their families Tip: If kids seem to be having difficulty blowing their pinwheels, just have them wave the pinwheels around and say, Whooooosh! *Give kids a snack and then ask them these questions: REVIEW THE STORY 1. What were Jesus friends waiting for in a dark room? (the special helper) 2. What sound did they hear? ( whoooosh like the wind) 3. Then what appeared? (Flames! The Holy Spirit!) 4. Where did the Holy Spirit go? (it went inside them) 5. After the helper came, what did the disciples do? (they ran out and told people about Jesus rescue) ACTIVITY Give each kid a pinwheel. Ask if they can remember what sound Jesus followers heard just before the Holy Spirit came? (It was a loud blowing sound like the wind) Demonstrate how to make the pinwheel spin by blowing on it. Explain that the wind reminds us that the Holy Spirit is here to help us. Then lead them in these activities: 1. Lead the kids in a march around the room while blowing their pinwheels. 2. Act it out: 1. Have everybody blow on their pinwheels, 2. You yell, The Holy Spirit is here! 3. Everybody shout, Jesus rescued us and is with us! or, for 3-year-olds, just cheer! *Pray together and thank God for sending the Holy Spirit to be our special helper. Extra time? Do the pinwheel activities again, or put on a Kids' Club song and challenge the kids to keep their pinwheel moving while the music is playing.

1 In this story, the disciples go from waiting in hiding to excitement at the arrival of the Holy Spirit. Reflect those emotions in your presentations! Show 'em the Word! Cut and tape parts of the script into the kids' Bible in the props box. This will allow you to show the kids where you're getting the lesson from - and remind you of your lines at the same time! We want kids to know these truths are grounded in the Bible. Presenter: Hi Friends! Welcome to Kid s Club. I'm and I'm really glad you're here today. Before we get started, I want you to meet my friend, HOPS. She s going to remind us of the kind of choices we can make today Kids Club. Video: HOPS 2 Obey Your Leaders (about 1 minute) REVIEW Presenter: (holding up the Bible for kids to see) This is God s story. Out of all the stories in the world, this story is the most important. It s God s Rescue plan. Remember how God made the whole world and everything was good? The world was perfect! Give me a smile and a thumbs up! (Let kids respond. Then change your tone): But THEN.something bad happened. Adam and Eve disobeyed God, and sadness and death came into the world Show me your sad face. (Let kids respond) This was really sad. But even though Adam and Eve disobeyed God God loved them anyway! And God sent his own son, Jesus, to rescue us from all the wrong things in the world! We talked about how Jesus rescued us by dying on the cross! And then he came back to life and went to Heaven! That s GREAT NEWS! GOD SENDS HELP But after Jesus left for Heaven, his friends didn t know what to do. Jesus had told them he would send a special helper to help them follow him. (Show picture of the disciples waiting.) So they waited for the helper to come.

They waited (Shift) And waited... (Look really bored.) And waited. Suddenly, a sound came from Heaven! It was like a great wind! Can you guys all stand up? (Let kids stand.) Let s wave our arms like they re waving in the wind (let kids wave their arms). Now let s say whoooooosh! (Lead kids in a low whooshing noise). Great job! Go ahead and have a seat. That wind filled the whole house and THEN the special helper came! It was the Holy Spirit. Can you guys say, Holy Spirit? (Let kids say, Holy Spirit. ) And the Holy Spirit filled each (start pointing to kids) and every (keep pointing) single (keep pointing) one of you! (Try to point to as many kids as possible!) THE DISCIPLES SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS RESCUE Now we re going to watch a video to learn the story of when the disciples waited for the helper, and Jesus sent the Holy Spirit. As you watch, see if you can figure out what Jesus friends did after the Holy Spirit came to them and filled their hearts. Video: God Sends Help (about 4 minutes) So, after the Holy Spirit came, what did Jesus friends do? This picture will give us a hint. (Show picture of disciples opening windows and let kids respond.) Yes, they threw open the windows, ran out and told everybody, Jesus rescued you! Let s yell that to each other right now! Ready? 1-2-3: Jesus rescued you! We can tell others about Jesus rescue and we know the Holy Spirit will help us! That s great news! Will you guys pray with me and thank Jesus for sending a helper? (Pray, breaking it into smaller, repeatable phrases.) Pray: Hi God! Thanks for rescuing us. Thanks for sending the Holy Spirit to help us. We love you. Aaaaaa-MEN! Let s sing some songs to thank Jesus for rescuing us and sending us a helper! Song: Be Strong Song: Great Day Dismiss kids to small groups. (Be creative as you dismiss them. Ask them to come give you a high five first, or maybe tiptoe or hop--like Hops--to their groups.)
