Knights of Columbus Cd913.org Issue No. 1 SEPTEMBER 2016 2016-2017 Greetings From the Navigator My Brother Sir Knights, Born: June, 1958 Birthplace: Washington, DC Grew up in Rockville, MD Moved to Wallingford, PA In 2006. I wish to thank everyone for the vote of confidence by electing me as your Navigator. The position will not be taken lightly, as I am truly honored to serve in this position. Those of you who have witnessed my climb through the chairs know that I have taken the challenge of each position seriously and I have dedicated myself to serving the positions with attention to detail. I promise to continue with the same dedication with my duties as Navigator. I would like to share my vision for the year ahead. I am dedicating this year to Saint Michael the Archangel. He is the leader of all angels and of the Army of God. Asking St. Michael to help us combat against the evils of Satan makes total sense to me because we as Catholics are challenged by constant persecution of our faith and our Catholic values. Although we always consider Jesus the champion of all things righteous, it doesn t hurt to have a saint or two intervening on our behalf. Because St Michael is the champion of all Christians, as well as the Patron Saint of soldiers, police officers, and doctors, I believe he is the perfect Saint to help lead Knights in service to others. I would like to invoke the Prayer of St. Michael at the beginning of each conclave meeting. Supporting and honoring our nation s soldiers exemplifies our patriotic degree. Doing the same for our nation s police officers, will emphasize our solidarity for those who combat evil in our local communities. Therefore, I would like to invoke the Prayer for the Safety of Soldiers and the Prayer for Police Officers on alternating months as we conclude each conclave. IMPORTANT INFORMATION 1. All 4th Degree members are invited to attend our Conclave meetings, which will be held at the Peace Council Home. The address is: 1195 Haverford Road, Crum Lynne, PA. The meeting will begin promptly at 7:30 PM in order to include the Rosary. Food will be ordered and consumed BEFORE the meeting. The monthly dinner details are being worked outs, so please be patient as we work on the transition. 2. All Knights, please join us on Wednesday, September 21 at 6:00 PM for our installation Mass and ceremony, which will be held at St. John Chrysostom Parish in Wallingford, PA. Refreshments to follow the installation. 3. Financial Secretaries, please forward the email addresses of your 4th Degree Knights so we can
communicate more efficiently through email and reduce costs of newsletter printing and postage. 4. Grand Knights, please share your council s events. I would like Fraternity to be our theme for the year. We are all Brothers in Christ. Therefore, I would like us all to share what we do within each council and with all of the other councils in the hope we can generate more support to the communities we serve. 5. Finally, pray on September 10 for the National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children, and again on September 11 for Patriot Day. Other dates to keep in mind are posted elsewhere in this newsletter. Vivat Jesus, Neal Pizzano Faithful Navigator, CDA 913 A Message from our Faithful Friar Saint Teresa of Kolkata (Mother Teresa) As I sit to write this message, the Church celebrates today, with the proclamation of Pope Francis in St. Peter s Square, the raising to the altars of sainthood of Mother Teresa- St. Teresa of Kolkata (Calcutta). This universally renowned and revered holy woman opened the eyes of the world to her mission of mercy in serving the poorest of the poor. As foundress of the Missionaries of Charity, this mission continues in 139 countries throughout the world with over 5000 sisters, priests and brothers living the charism and spirit of their now saintly Founder. Mother Teresa, in her sublime humility, saw herself as a pencil in the hand of God recognizing that it is God who does the good work through her in serving the countless poor that were so dear to her in her ministry. Many claim that the gospel according to Saint Teresa, and one she continually preached, is found in five simple yet profound words- you did it for me. Her inspiration for this mantra found their origin in the Gospel verse from Matthew and in the words of Jesus: Whatever you did for one of these least brothers (and sisters) of mine, you did it for me. (Matthew 25:40). With this insight, Mother could then say that she saw Jesus in the distressing disguise of the poor and these words were her continual motivation in a life of heroic virtue and service in the kingdom of God. All of this had one overarching source found in the words of Jesus from the cross- I thirst. For our newly proclaimed saint, these words of Jesus were more than just an expression of extreme physical thirst but more deeply Jesus unconditional and infinite love for us in which I (Jesus) thirst for your love in return. Mother Teresa loved Jesus radically above all people and things and in a personal and intimate love. It was this great love which bred her holiness and saintliness. It was most fitting that the canonization was celebrated during the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy as Saint Teresa of Calcutta truly embodied the mercy of Jesus Christ who Pope Francis stated was the face of mercy revealing the mercy of God the Father who is rich in mercy. You may recall that during the last fraternal year, I had proposed that the assembly take on a project of mercy and it was decided that a fundraiser would be held to raise some money for a charitable veteran s cause. For a number of reasons, this did not get off the ground. I would like to up the ante for this fraternal year and propose participation by the members of the Cardinal Dougherty Assembly in a hands-on project of mercy that would involve veterans and/or their families in recognition of the 4th degree ideal of patriotism and to carry on a work of mercy beyond the Year of Mercy which has been encouraged by Pope Francis. I have a couple of ideas that I will propose at the conclave in September. In addition, this would be a way to the honor the newly proclaimed saint, Teresa of Kolkata, and to imitate her as a saint of mercy. Vivat Jesus! Fr. Dennis
