Many people upon first attending our church comment on the friendliness of the congregation, which is helped by greeters before and after the service, and a fellowship tea following the service. Our size allows us to get to know one another personally and our sharing the joys and concerns each Sunday morning during the service expresses the members' honest concern for each other and promotes unity. Music plays an important part of our worship service. The members of our congregation are a people who believe in prayer. We share a vision to see the church grow and reach more people for Jesus Christ. Our church has been fortunate to have dedicated and committed individuals to serve as Elders and Deacons and as teachers and leaders for Sunday school, Bible Study Groups, Men's Breakfast, Knit Nite group and Outreach/fellowship bowling and basketball. Our Deacons have a wonderful ministry which includes Samaritan s Purse shoe box ministry, biannual rummage sales, coats for winter, quarterly community outreach missions which have included building houses, and working with local charities. We have a part time church secretary who helps with the work necessary in the life of the church. Spiritual growth is felt in our congregation not only through worship service but through Sunday school and Bible Study done in an atmosphere of sharing our faith. Our financial needs presently have been met without pledging, with mission giving as a strong point. Our annual Spaghetti Feed fund raiser helps with our commitments. One concern would be to see growth in numbers within our church, and bring the youth
back. Our congregation is very bible oriented and would like to maintain that strength in Worship service. The congregation will support and assist the pastor through our prayers and hard work. Mission Statement Calvary Presbyterian Church's mission is to nurture the spiritual growth of our congregation to become more Christ-like and to bring others to experience a personal relationship and salvation with Jesus Christ. Duration of services to be provided shall be the lesser of 12 months or when a new pastor is hired and begins working at Calvary Presbyterian Church. This position requires the Interim Pastor to: perform pastoral duties by preaching and worship leadership; administer the sacraments of baptism and holy communion; officiate at weddings and funerals act as Head of staff lead the Church in its outreach to the community and be a visible representative for CPC provide for the spiritual growth, by leading bible study groups and supporting educational programs provide for pastoral care and counseling in conjunction with the Deacons assess and promote CPC's future and facilitate the well-being our congregation Participate fully in the Presbytery according to the Polity of Evangelical Covenant Order of Presbyterians (ECO) denomination Our Local Community Stockton is located in the northern San Joaquin Valley and is the 13th largest city in California. The city is south of the state capital Sacramento and east of San Francisco and has an estimated population of 302,400.
Built during the California Gold Rush, Stockton's seaport serves as a gateway to the Delta waterways. The main industry continues to be farming and agriculture. Stockton has been the location of the oldest university in California, University of the Pacific since 1923. Our church is located in a more established part of Stockton in a neighborhood surrounded by homes and apartments. Our church community is a commuter group with very few members living within a 5 miles radius. One of our missions has been to try to involve our surrounding neighbors in our worship. The city of Stockton has struggled with social problems for the last several years with bankruptcy, crime rate, and homelessness. Things are improving which offers us an opportunity to see our church grow and reach more people for Jesus Christ. Narrative Questions 1. What would you say is unique about your church? Our congregation has always been committed to generous mission giving even through hard times. We are a multi-generation of faithful members with strong beliefs in Biblical truths. We live lives dependent on the power of the Holy Spirit, prayer and study of God s Word. 2. Describe how your church is fulfilling its mission in its community. We have a strong participation in local missions. Also when there is a need either in the community or with families, our church is very willing to help in any way possible. 3. Describe limitations that you believe your church has to fulfilling its mission in its community. We are experiencing struggles during our pastoral transition. We also have the need to reach out to the surrounding neighborhood. We are looking for someone inspired by God to grow this church by bringing in the youth and young families in honor of our L o r d J e s u s Christ 4. What social and theological issues affect your church s ministry in the present world and explain how your church deals with them. We are deeply concerned with the watering down of Biblical truths we see around us. We continue teaching Bible truths and encourage our members to reach out to others in the community. 5. What are your congregation s skills and gifts that help your church carry out its mission? We are a congregation that believes in the power of prayer. We have a very active congregation. Our members are faithful in visiting the sick and shut-ins. Our people respond when there are needs in our church and community by coming out and supporting all our outreaches, missions and events. We just do what needs to be done. 6.
