Faith Formation Gifts of Love Not much is known about St. Valentine or the history of Valentine's Day. Some historians state St. Valentine refused to renounce his faith and Christianity and was executed on February 14, 269. Other depictions of St. Valentine tell that he secretly married couples so husbands wouldn't have to go to war. Another variation of the legend of St. Valentine says he refused to sacrifice to pagan gods, was imprisoned and while imprisoned he healed the jailer's blind daughter. On the day of his execution, he left the girl a note signed, "Your Valentine." Although the exact origin of the holiday is not widely agreed upon, it is widely recognized as a day for love. It is also a day when gifts are exchanged by sweethearts...usually in the form of chocolates. This Valentine's Day why not give some gifts of love like Jesus did. The Gift of Forgiveness Jesus was a master of forgiveness - he forgave those disciples who did not support him, those who crucified him as he said "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do." If Jesus can forgive under such circumstances, surely we can find an occasion to forgive. The Gift of Comfort - He promises that if we take his yoke on us (that means to follow his laws), we will be comforted. We should look for opportunities to comfort others (in words and deeds). The Gift of Love Jesus loved little children and he also loved people of other races, other belief systems, even those who did not love him. In fact, he said to bless those who cursed and hated us. Consider who the hated are in present-day life. It could be world leaders, school bullies, folks whose way of life is different from ours...think about some loveable qualities which that person has and endeavor to see him as a child of God. Have a Happy Valentine's Day and give some gifts of love. ~Blessings, Linda Cummer, Faith Formation Coordinator (Resource: http://www.biblewise.com) Health & Wellness Living Healthy is a Prayer FIVE WAYS TO PROTECT BONE HEALTH Bones are filled with lots of little holes, like a honeycomb. Over time, these holes get bigger and make our bones less dense. Osteoporosis occurs when you lose so much bone density that your bones become weak and break easily. Your risk of developing osteoporosis increases with age. Also long term use off certain medications, such as corticosteroids and some anti-seizure drugs, raises your risk. Taking care of your bones can help them stay stronger. * Get a bone density test. All women over the age of 65 should have their bone density checked. This test may be repeated every two years or more if needed. * Consume calcium and vitamin D. Low-fat milk and dairy products, dark green leafy vegetables, sardines and calciumfortified juices and cereals are good sources of calcium. Fortified milk, saltwater fish, and egg yolks provide Vitamin D. * Engage in weight-bearing exercise. Walking, jogging, climbing stairs, dancing, playing tennis and weight training are good examples of weight-bearing exercise. * Avoid smoking and limit alcohol. Long-term heavy drinking may cause bone loss. Smoking raises the risk for breaking a bone. * Discuss medicine with your doctor. Several medicines are available to help prevent or treat osteoporosis, but not everyone needs them. (Adapted from WPS Wise & Well, Fall 2018)

David Ruby Jesus said to Simon, Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men. Luke 5:10 Dear Brothers and Sisters, In today s Gospel, Simon Peter and his fellow fishermen have a frustrating night of fishing. Simon questions Jesus after He suggests they lower their nets and give it another shot. Why on earth would they catch anything now? Jesus put these fishermen to the test. He created a situation so the disciples would learn to trust Him and Simon is deeply sorry for doubting Jesus who, of course, forgives him. God s mercy is there for all who ask forgiveness and all who have faith in Him. Furthermore, Jesus is telling the fishermen they have the ability to transform the world! Here in our Parish, we have fantastic faith formation educators who are catching young souls to be disciples of Christ. Youth Ministry does the very thing Jesus did with the fishermen-they bring young people into experiences where they see the face of Jesus in others, where they encounter God s mercy in an intimate way and are forever changed because of these events. Students who attend Youth Ministry programs sponsored by the Bishop s Appeal tend to become very connected with their Catholic faith and they truly become the future of our Church. Please make your gift to the Bishop s Appeal today and help reach out to build young disciples of Christ! Contact our parish office, use the pledge card you received at home or visit the Bishop s Appeal website at www.catholicfoundationgb.org/give to make a gift. Thank you for your gift to the Bishop s Appeal and for your support of Stella Maris Parish.
