As part of the campaign, a street play was conducted at the junction of Duraisamy Road and Usman Road (T. Nagar) on April 10. The EC and the civic Man who conned actor Rajasree arrested Police on April 14 arrested a man from Trichy for allegedly stealing a Rolex watch and diamond and gold jewellery worth Rs. 30 lakhs from yesteryear Tamil actor Rajasree on April 12. Footage from a CCTV camera in a showroom in T. Nagar helped in the arrest. Police identified the accused as I. Sarfuddin (30) of Ramji Nagar in Trichy. Rajasree, who acted in hit films like Bhama Vijayam and Kadhalikka Neramillai, and her son Srinivasan had gone to an SBI branch in T. Nagar to take the valuables from their locker. Later, as she was sitting alone in her car in the parking lot, Sarfuddin approached her body have erected awareness banners in public places and are also using communication mediums like bulk SMS, and social media networks like Facebook and Whatsapp to spread awareness. and asked if she had dropped currency notes on the road. Page 2 MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 3 In the early days of movies, the word Talkies was used as the suffix to the name of a cinema theater as in Select Talkies, Crown Talkies and such. These names appear confusing - and even amusing to foreigners in India and to those studying the history of Indian Cinema. The word was used by theater owners to make it clear that it was wired and equipped for sound and that it screened talking pictures and not silent movies. Even after movies began to talk in 1931, silent films continued to be made for some more time and screened as before In India. So, at a given point of time in a town, both silent and talking pictures were being screened in different theaters! To distinguish between the two, the word Talkies was added to the name of the theater with sound equipment. Such names continue to be in vogue even today in the 21 st century in many parts of India, especially in small towns and rural areas. Indian Cinema played a significant role in the Freedom Movement, in spite of the rigid system of film censorship by the British government. Yet filmmakers used smart and subtle methods to introduce the message of the struggle, mainly through songs. The role of Tamil Cinema in the Freedom Movement awaits a full and in-depth study till today. Unfortunately there are no gramophone records (then commonly known as plates ) of the songs of Kalidas, and no print of the film has survived. Even the song-book is not traceable and, sadly, details about the names of its lyricist and music composer and other technicians remain unknown. Kalidas was the only Tamil talkie to be produced in 1931 and it created history. A new aural age in cinema had dawned and the role of film music began to take roots in the hearts, minds and souls of moviegoers. In the same year, many silent films were produced in Madras. They were Bhaktha Vatsal (or Durvaasa Garva Bangham ), Leila, the Star of Mingrelia, Maya Madhusudhan, Nara Narayan, Praval Padmini (or Coral Queen ), Rose of Rajasthan, Satharam, Signet Ring (the latter-day pioneer and famed filmmaker, K. Subramanyam, then cutting his teeth in cinema, wrote its story and scenario), Taranhar (story and scenario - K. Subramanyam) and Vishwamitra. Sadly these films are lost forever in the limbo of time. Even though the films were silent, they were accompanied by background music provided in the cinema house by the exhibitor. Instrument players, mostly using harmonium and tabla and sometimes a flute, sat in the pit of the theater and they played appropriate background music score. Interestingly the background score for the same movie varied from theater to theater - even from show to show - depending on the moods of the instrument players who produced the score at a moment s notice! Not any easy job that! There were also men standing at a doorway in the middle of the theater-wall and they narrated, in the local language, the events on the screen and also spoke out the dialogues in their own fashion. Such men, known as barkers, enjoyed a certain degree of popularity and some of them were treated as stars with fan following of their own! This practice was in vogue in Japan and also in small towns and villages in India. The silent films were less than 6000 feet in length and were screened at the speed of 16 frames per second. The 35 mm sound films run at 24 frames per second. Another interesting feature which was popular in that period in South India was live shows during the screening of a silent film. Projection would be stopped and dancers, mostly scantily dressed women, would come on stage and perform dances for about fifteen to twenty minutes. Such dances were widely advertised in hand bills and the crowds were larger on such days! (To be continued) Free Veda classes on Sundays Sri Sai Seva Chakra (15, Bharathi Street, West Mambalam) conducts free Veda classes from 6.30 a.m to 7.30 a.m on Sundays in Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Mahara-japuram Santhanam Salai, T. Vacant house used for nefarious activities A vacant house in a bad condition on Sivasailam Street, T. Nagar is being used by miscreants for nefarious activities. According to nearby residents, neither the plot nor the Uma Raj (Founder, Sugha Welfare Association) was felicitated by Melaka Tamil Sangam in Malaysia for her work on upliftment of women for several years. Uma has trained more than 3500 women many of whom have gone on to become entrepreneurs. She offers training in making jute NO HOLDS BARRED By M. A. SADANAND Divine Justice Over a hundred avid worshippers in the temple in Puttingal, Kollam District of Kerala, had a fiery landing in the other world a few days back, of course, minus their bodies, since TNT, doing its unlicensed dance to please the Gods, got its job right. When the rest of the world stood still, it blasted away to glory leaving over a hundred dead. God, who makes everything for His children, cannot be watched over by mere policemen or every ammunition stock examined for certification. A blasting licence needs no further scrutiny. It may also be a true depiction of what God was telling His worshippers that what He intended will happen, no matter what. Another school of thought that sprouted after the tragedy seems to have been arguing that the pyrotechnics involved were a wee bit lax and that the display was a wee bit before its time. There was nothing wrong with the contraption and the poor suckers hastened the fuse! Well, there comes the human bungle for all the world to see until the case goes to the Supreme Court 20 years later! The SC is full of 30, 40, 50 year old cases. We can hear, perhaps, a split verdict in about 50 years from now, by which time the heroes and villains in the case would be dead! Should justice crawl? I venture to suggest that fireworks be banned in all temples, their store houses, and any precincts dealing with a congregations of more than 10 people. No explosives should be licensed to be stored in any house of God! It is because of these manmade storms and thunders that we are unable to listen to God s sane advice. God needs no physical proof of his might through exhibitionism and pyrotechnics. Accept Him quietly to allow your brain to grow to full capacity. God is not a street show. You don t have to prove anything because your presence on earth is to make you realise that the heaven you always sought is here. You are part of it. You need not explode fireworks to tell the world. house is being maintained by its owner. There is no security which makes it easy for antisocial elements to misuse the building and the plot for nefarious activities, said a resident. Felicitated for creating entrepreneurs bags, artificial jewellery, masala powders, herbal mixes, squashes and other items. Her contact number is 94443 41194. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Brackish water in open drains poses hazard Sir, During the heavy rains followed by floods last December, Rajamannar Salai and 80 Feet Road, K. K. Nagar got inundated. To drain the stagnant water, Corporation workers broke and removed the slabs covering the storm water drains on the road. Four months have since passed and the storm water drains are yet to be closed. The drains are filled with stinking, brackish water which has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. It is posing a major health hazard for the residents of the street and a number of them have come down with vector diseases like viral fever and dengue. To add to their woes, the pavements on the stretch of Rajamannar Road between 80 Feet Road and Ponnambalam Road junctions are encroached upon by roadside vendors. Pedestrians are forced to walk on the road. Will the authorities take action to pump out the stagnant water from the drains, and close them and also clear the encroachments? Seshasayee, Santhosh Colony, P. V. Rajamannar Road, K. K. Nagar Vegetable shop blocks pavement Sir, A vegetable shop is encroaching on the pavement of Jubilee Road at its junction with Thambiah Road, West Mambalam. The road at the junction is already narrow. Pedestrians are forced to walk on the busy road thereby risking their lives. Will the Corporation authorities take action to evict the vegetable shop from the pavement for the benefit of pedestrians? R. Mohan, West Mambalam.
