Martin Luther This Epistle is really the chief part of the New Testament and the very purest Gospel, and is worthy not only that every Christian should know it word for word, by heart, but occupy himself with it every day, as the daily bread of the soul. It can never be read or pondered too much, and the more it is dealt with the more precious it becomes, and the better it tastes.
Romans 1:16-17 (NIV) 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.
v. 15. And there Paul said, I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. Why is Paul eager to preach the gospel in Rome? For I am not ashamed of the gospel Why is he not ashamed of the gospel? For it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes, first to the Jew and then to the Gentile. How is the gospel the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes? For in it, the righteousness of God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last. Is this a new idea that Paul thought up? No, Habakkuk 2:4, just as it is written, The righteous will live by faith.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel
Romans 1:1-4 (NIV) Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures regarding his Son, who as to his earthly life was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.
because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes
10 As it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one; 11 there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. 12 All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one. 17 and the way of peace they do not know. 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.
Romans 1:18 18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness,
Romans 5:9-10 9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God s wrath through him! 10 For if, while we were God s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!
Romans 1:19-20 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God s invisible qualities his eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
Romans 2:14-15 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.)
Romans 3:19-20 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law (that s Israel), so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.
Ephesians 2:8-9 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.
For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed
21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement through the shedding of his blood to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.
