THE GOD WE TRUST Isaiah 41.10 ISA 41.10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Intro In life, no one gets to live their lives in isolation Everybody s got somebody- in some fashion or another- to live with It s just the way God designed life to be lived That we would share our lives as well Illus- Sam the Driver I was traveling along Memorial Drive in Greenville the other day when the Check Engine light on my car came on Never a good thing So I turned around and limped back to the dealership to have it fixed Nothing interesting about that, except what happened as a result of it I met a man- his name was Sam- and we had quite a conversation as he drove me home He had quite a story to tell Sam is a walking miracle He had a stroke 5 years ago He was walking along one day when he began getting dizzy Not knowing what it was, he started to sit down when he collapsed on the floor And Sam was lucky, he was around some friends- and they could see he was in distress They immediately called EMS They got him to the hospital But it wasn t looking good for Sam He was having a stroke 4 days Sam remained in a coma His wife came to visit No one was sure he was going to make it But then after 4 days- with his wife next to him- he opened his eyes And from that time forward his life slowly started to improve He said the 4 days in a coma transformed his life Ques- So I asked him, In what way? And that is when he backed up to tell me his life story Sam was a truck driver He drove the big rigs- not 18 wheelers, but larger He transported the windmills for the utilities that you see in places like Elizabeth City And he did this work for more than 30 years But as he was nearing retirement- his first wife died He went back to work for a short while, completing a total of 34 years 1

But his heart wasn t in it So he retired- alone, in Bath- where he met his second wife 2 And at that point his life began to take a different turn He remarried, moved to Bear Grass, and started a mission to save the animals And that s what the two are doing today So far they have collected 15 cats and dogs They know them all by name And they intend to save as many as they can He is also working part time at the dealership And in his off time he helps his wife And on s they go to Macedonia Christian Church on Highway 17, where he goes to church every Sam is a miracle, and he will be the first to tell you- and since his stroke he says he is a changed man He and his wife are on a mission to save the animals It might not be what we would do, but for Sam it s what he feels he needs to do But there is a powerful lesson here 1. If God Has Saved You- Then You Have A Story To Tell- And A Responsibility To Share It Sam s story unfolded in a car He had no idea who I was, but as we kept traveling he kept talking I don t think it had anything to do with inspiring trust- I just think he had a story he wanted to tell We see it throughout scripture God has a story he wants to tell And he wants it shared by me and you Illus- Sam As A Changed Man What comes through loud and clear in Sam s life is gratitude He learned to trust God And he wants others to know what he has been through- and that God is alive and well But Sam s story is our story too And that is what Isaiah 41.10 is trying to tell us, what God wants others to know about what only he can do 2. That If You Can Trust God To Save You For Eternity, Then You Can Trust Him To Lead You For A Lifetime As Jesus says, MT 11.28 Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. But knowing this- and living it out- requires trust Too many wait too long, because they have not learned where their redemption lies Illus- Death Bed Confessions

Ques- Maybe you remember the thief on the cross? He converted at the last minute, and was promised Paradise 3 Ques- But suppose he had not been on that cross? Would he have surrendered to Christ then? Ques- And what about death bed conversions? What is the difference between that- and living one s life in the grace of Christ today? Or doesn t it matter? There is a reason why we trust God now- not later- it is foolish to believe the world is a safe place Dangers are everywhere But it is also foolish to doubt And not share one s faith Knowing God saves you- but that in no way proves you trust him More is expected than that More is required than that Ques- If you don t know God- how can you trust God? And if you don t trust God- how can you love God? Few folks will take a step of faith toward anyone they do not trust But it also works in a much more significant way Since our lives reveal where our faith is- we also show the depth, weight, and love in it too I. BUT GOD CAN BE TRUSTED- HE WILL NEVER MISLEAD YOU- AND HE NEVER MAKES MISTAKES (Mt. 11.28) MT 11.28 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Ques- We have all heard the words of Jesus- we know them, maybe quote them- but do we trust them? It seems not And so these words remain relevant today 1. You Never Know God Is All You Need Until God Is All You Have As Proverbs 3.5 says, PROV 3.5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. God can be trusted- but know it and doing it are two different things Lots of people have trust problems They judge inaccurately, so they don t benefit spiritually Illus- Cosmetology I was talking to the girl who cuts my hair She is a cosmetologist We were talking about her job She was complaining about her hours- she stands all day long And we got to talking about salaries for cosmetologists They make good money to cut hair

4 She was trained at Mitchell s, and today she makes a good salary She cuts my hair and makes $18 in 15 minutes You can quickly add it up Men s haircuts are the cheapest- she earns somewhere around $100 an hour She works about 50 hours a week At $100, or $5,000 per month, or $60,000 per year Not bad Ques- But anybody can cut hair- so why does she earn so much more? She has a level of expertise And she has come to be trusted As here credentials indicate And she is good at it Ques- But would I trust her to change the oil in my car? Would I trust her to install a new roof on the parsonage? And that s where her credentials reveal Some might not like her hair styles But for every critic, there are 100 s who like her- and trust her She has earned her credentials Ques- And what about spiritual matters? How do you determine expertise? Is it simply a matter of reading the Bible- or is there something more Those in the know say Yes The reason to keep going to a cosmetologist is hair doesn t stop growing The reason to keep going to church is to keep getting infusions of faith 1. And The More We Trust God- The Less We Suffer- And Find Immunity From Despair Illus- Look At Your Gauges! Recently while working on my car I have been in despair mode I have an ammeter, water temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, and a gas gauge And all of them are there so I can trust what s going on under the hood Ask any pilot when they are disoriented in flight what they are taught to do- Look at your gauges! Illus- John Kennedy, Jr. You might remember John Kennedy, Jr. He died through disorientation over the Atlantic, killing himself and all of his passengers I have this friend, who every time the gas gauge gets down to ¾ of a tank, they fill it back up But I also know some who go past E - and stay there Their car runs on fumes Now consider that which matters most of all

Ques- Do you know anybody whose spiritual gas tank is on E? They are running on fumes, and it is only a matter of time before despair follows 5 II. GOD CALLS US TO TAKE SIMPLE STEPS OF FAITH (Prov. 3.5-6) PROV 3.5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. There are so many people I see trying so hard to make it They go to great lengths to give their families what they want- beyond what they need So they are tired, and harassed- stretched to the limit And they do these things even though they too have needs I sympathize with these people- and God does too 1. That Is Why We Are Admonished To Have Faith- Not Because God Needs It, But Because We Need It As Isaiah 53.6 says, ISA 53.6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Living like the world only makes us more worldly No wonder so many are so tired You can see it on their faces They are exhausted trying to make a living instead of designing their lives on Christ Illus- Stationary Bike Over the years I have worked hard at maintaining good health For years I have exercised, and I have done pretty well These days I ride an exercise bike I get on my bike, and I ride as hard as I can- but that s exercise, not living in the real world But for some that s what the real world is like for them They are pedaling as fast as they can- but not getting anywhere And like a hamster on the wheel, all they succeed in doing is exhausting themselves 2. Trust Comes Down To Faith- We Start With Simple Faith- And Move Toward Greater Maturity It seems what gets people is the phrase that says PROV 3.5 lean not on your own understanding Ques- How exactly do you do that? Just start your day all over again Illus- Let s Start Our Day All Over Ques- Have you ever had one of those days when you never got out of bed? You miss the alarm clock- and you fall out of bed You rush to the shower and burn yourself You try to shave and cut your face You rush to the car- driving high speed, dodging red lights because you are late You get to work- and find out nothing runs right You get home- so you kick the cat You put the dinner in the oven- and burn it

Your spouse is cranky- and your children are fighting 6 It shouldn t have to be said, but when life gets like that- we need to stop God is never rushed, Jesus never had to hurry, and Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly So start your day all over again III. EVERYTHING GOD GIVES IS MEANT FOR US TO DEVELOP TRUST- AND WHEN WE LEARN THAT LESSON WE COME TO REALIZE HE HAS BEEN ALONGSIDE US THE ENTIRE TIME (Isa. 41.10) ISA 41.10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. If faith and trust were easy, then everybody could be trusted But we know that s not true We still have criminals, unbelievers, and politicians 1. But That s Not God s Way- Politicians Can t Be Trusted- But God Never Fails Ques- The question is, Do we believe it? Illus- He Was There Never say, God s not there He was there when the storm raged and the disciples were afraid He was there to raise Lazarus after 3 days in the tomb He was there when the Emmaus walkers asked him to eat with them He was there for Thomas- so he could put his hands in the holes of his body He was there when Christ rose from the grave Ques- If he was there in all those places- don t you think he will be there for you in yours? Conclusion As Psalm 20.7 says, PS 20.7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. Ques- So when it comes to trust for you- is it a what- or is it a who? Trust is personal It emanates from you It is not a part of you- it is all of you Your brain, your feelings, your experiences, your training and education- all wrapped up into one Ques- And isn t that what God wants? That you would be wrapped up in trusting just one The God We Trust- who loves you June 10, 2018 Fort Barnwell Baptist Church Fort Barnwell, NC 28526 Reese Blanchett 2018 Sermon outlines may be used for preaching and teaching purposes But may not be published or sold.
