A Message From The Chapter Directors Alright already with the weather. As of this writing (March 24) I m sure all of us want to get our bikes/trikes out for a Chapter ride. We had thirty-two members in attendance at our March meeting and one guest (Mark Harris father). For those of you who were unable to attend, we acknowledged George Woodside for another great article published in Wing World regarding the GPS system on the Gold Wing. We also acknowledged our family members who sustained injuries/surgeries recently. Of course there was John Higley with a broken bone in his lower leg due to a fall, Dusty Rhoades with a leg injury due to a snow boarder running into him, Jim Hudson recovering from a shoulder surgery and of course, Kay Dyer who will now be having a knee replacement surgery. I guess we will have to have a separate table at the next meeting just for the above members. All joking aside, I know all of the Sierra Eagle s family wishes you all a speedy recovery. Also discussed was the Vial of Life. For those of you who may not be familiar with this, it is an empty prescription bottle that you keep in the left side faring pocket. Inside the bottle you place a list of your current medications and any allergies to medications you may have. In the event that (heaven forbid) something should happen during a group ride, and you need to be transported to a medical facility, that vial can accompany you to the hospital and given to the medical personnel. For those of you who currently have these vials in your bike/trike, please make sure that they are up to date. It is also a good idea to keep the list in the glove compartment of your car. Sue and I have a list for each other that we keep in our wallets. We would like to again, thank everyone for supporting the Veteran s Guest House for last months charity. They were really grateful for all the donations. Our charity for June will be the Humane Society. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Joan Rhoades for stepping up and agreeing to coordinate the next charity event. Joan is working with the Director of Operations to address us about the Humane Society and its current needs. We will have one more charity later this year. So far recommendations have been made for Precious Paws Society of Nevada, Reno Gospel Mission and Evelyn Mount Community Outreach. Any other suggestions are appreciated. We discussed having a garage sale with all proceeds going to support our chapter. Steve Rubenstein and Charla Brand volunteered to use their home for this event. It will be held on June 2, 2018 at 7AM. We will have more on this event later. Our thanks also go out to Ken Crow for another great Safety Social on March 22 which was attended by 14 of our members. Page 2

Sue and I will be out of the county starting April 15 and returning home on May 5. In our absence, our capable Assistant Chapter Directors, Jim and Kathy Hudson, will be taking over and our calendar of events will continue as scheduled. If you have any questions during this time please contact Jim and Kathy at jhudson@att.net or by calling them at (775) 552-2491. Taking a look at the calendar for April, we will have the TRC Course on April 13th and 14th.The classroom portion of the course will be held on the 13 th from 1600 2000 hours at REMSA, 400B Edison Way, Reno. The practical portion of the course will be held on the 14 th from 1200 1600 at Summit Racing, 960 East Glendale, Sparks. Of course we will have our monthly meeting April 14 th at Denny s. If the weather finally decides to cooperate, there may be a ride after the meeting for those of you not attending the TRC course. On April 20th, 21st, 22nd, the RV SIG will have it s shake down trip at Gold Ranch RV Park in Verdi. On April 26th we will have our Safety Social. We will advise everyone later if it will take place at Summit Racing or Denny s, depending on what the weather is doing. We currently have the Almanor Lake ride scheduled on April 28th with Ken Crow as your Road Captain. I would like to wish my wife Happy Birthday on April 20 th. We will be spending her birthday at sea and our Anniversary in London. Thanks for putting up with me all these years and I look forward to many more together. A Message From The Assistant Chapter Directors Well, it is now officially Spring, 2018, and as I m writing this, snow flurries are looming. Our ride to Smith Valley that was scheduled for today has been cancelled, and now I have to try to get out of my funk and write something intelligent. The good news is that by next week, it is supposed to get into the 70 s, so maybe we ve turned a corner on this Winter stuff. If you haven t yet looked at the April issue of Wing World, take a look at the article on pages 54-55. Our own George Woodside penned a great product review article on the Long Ride Shields Taka windshield. It s a great article/review, and gets the name of the Sierra Eagles out there on a national basis. Thanks, George for your efforts. I finally had the opportunity to head to Big Valley Honda to take a look at the 2018 Gold Wing. They had three on the floor, two Gold Wings (the former F6B) and a beautiful, blue Gold Wing Tour, which is a Demo. Sadly, the weather was such that I couldn t take it out for a spin, but I look forward to doing so in the near future. My first impression is that it appears to be more oriented to sport touring than touring. The saddlebags are significantly smaller, and carrying capacity is definitely reduced in them. Additionally, the profile is definitely more narrow, and I have some concerns about weather protection. The new electrically adjustable windshield is fantastic, though seemed a bit narrow for my liking. I m sure the aftermarket will take care of this. I m very interested in the DCT transmission it was weird not having a clutch lever on the bike. All in all, it s a beautiful bike, but for now, I think I m going to keep my 2015. That having been said, after I take a demo ride on it, my impression might change. All the trade magazines have absolutely loved the new design, and its riding characteristics. Weather permitting, our safety social will be April 26th at 6:00 p.m. Let s all try to make it! See you all at the April meeting on the 14th! Chapter Treasurers Clyde and Lucy Herring would like to remind you about the Door Prize incentive. They are asking everyone to check boxes in the garage and other storage places to see if there is anything that could be donated as a door prize. They can use anything you think someone else could use or would like. As a reward you receive double 50/50 raffle tickets! A very special THANK YOU to everyone who donates items to the Chapter for our monthly Door Prize Pool and those who continue to buy the 50/25/25 tickets. March Chapter Gathering Notes Our gathering started with Chapter Director Ken Pouliot leading the Pledge of Allegiance. We had thirty-two GWRRA members. Ken welcomed everyone to the gathering and asked that everyone be sure to have their name tags and that they had signed in. Mark Harris brought a guest whose name is Jerry Harris who happens to be his Dad. Discussed having a Garage Sale to make money for the Chapter. Steve Rubenstein and Charla Brand volunteered to use their house for this event. It will be held on June 2, 2018 at 7 AM. Please price all items before bringing them to the event. Charity for the month of June will be the Human Society. Joan Rhoades will be handling this one. Suggestion for September is Reno Gospel Mission. The activity binder has been updated and will be available at meetings on the front table. Ken thanked Clyde Herring for our CPR class. He did an awesome job. Don't forget to update your Vial of Life and be sure it is in your left side pocket of your motorcycle faring. Having them in your other vehicles is also recommended. Congratulations to George Woodside on another article published in the Wing World. New Gold Books have been received. Twenty-two personal invitation letters will be sent out on March 15th to inactive members. Motor Awareness: Jim Hudson has more pamphlets to be handed out if anyone needs one. Also reminded us to talk with people about Motorcycle Awareness. Ken Crow presented Certificates and Patches for Level 4 Masters to Ken Pouliot and Jim Hudson. He also presented Master shirts to Jim Hudson, Ken Pouliot, Chris Ward, and Dusty Rhoades. We now have 17 members that are Master Riders. Mickey Farrington discussed the TRC Advanced Rider Course. The class portion will be on April 13th at REMSA from 4 PM to 8 PM. The riding portion will be on April 14th at Summit Racing from Noon to 4 PM. Cost is $30.00 Marianne Farrington discussed a Cruise that the District in New Mexico is putting on in February of 2019. Page 6
