Unfolding God s Story for Teachers Still on his second missionary journey, Paul and his friends Aquila and Priscilla traveled together to Ephesus. After a short time he departed, leaving them behind. He went to Jerusalem and then back to Antioch, where his journey had begun (see Acts 15:35-40;18:18-22). On his third journey, Paul was used by God to defeat demons in Ephesus (see 19:1,11-20), where he also survived a riot (see vv. 21-41). In Troas, God raised a young man from the dead through Paul (see 20:6-12). Near the end of this trip on which God had used Paul to grow believers and churches, Paul visited Caesarea on Palestine s coast and saw Philip the evangelist. He also was given a prophetic warning about going to Jerusalem, even though he had his heart set on going there (see 19:21; 21:7-16). He was ready not only to be bound, but also to die there for Jesus sake (Acts 21:13). Believers in Jerusalem welcomed Paul, but soon the Jewish leaders spotted him and incited a riot. After the crowd calmed down, Paul shared his testimony. This further angered the Jews, and Paul soon was bound and headed for prison. Being a Roman citizen probably kept him from being killed (see 21:15 22:29). Paul spent several years in jail awaiting his trial. During this time he shared his faith with Festus, King Agrippa, and others. He might have been released had he not appealed to Caesar (see 22:30 26:32). He therefore would face trial in Rome. This brings us to today s passage, Acts 27:1 28:2. Paul, numerous other prisoners, Luke, and others boarded a large cargo ship bound for Rome. The sailing season was growing shorter and the weather was growing more unpredictable. They were forced to stop at Fair Havens on the Island of Crete. Against Paul s advice, the centurion and the captain decided to push on. A favorable wind came up and they set sail; however, conditions quickly changed and they were forced to allow the gale to pull them along. The men threw the ship s cargo and gears overboard, but the prospect of a safe arrival still was fading. Even so, God was not finished with Paul and sent an angel to let him know all would survive. Despite what Paul s shipmates were seeing and experiencing, his prophetic announcement to them brought hope and encouragement. After going for days without food, they ate and prepared to beach the ship. However, instead of landing softly on the beach, the ship hit sand and broke apart because of the fierce waves. The men were forced to swim ashore, but all 276 of them were spared, just as God had promised! There is much to take away from this passage, but one point is very clear, God is faithful to keep His promises. God s plan for our lives is sure and His promises sustain us as we follow. Trust is paramount. As Paul declared, I believe God that it will be just the way it was told to me (Acts 27:25). Trust and be amazed! Lesson Plan Arrival Greet children at eye level and express how happy you are to see them. Be sure each child has a name tag and the security measures of your church are followed. Label all coats and personal belongings. Strongly encourage children who have brought items from home, such as toys and books, to place them on a shelf while they are working with other materials. Assure children their items will be safe and they can take them home at the end of the session. Help each child make a choice where he or she would like to begin his or her Center Time. Express the following in your own words: Have you ever had someone promise you that they ll take you to get ice cream, and they did? How did that make you feel? Now suppose a friend promises to give you a certain toy but then changes his or her mind. How would you feel if that happened? You know, there may be times in our lives when people disappoint because they don t keep their promises. I have some good news for you, though I know Someone who will never break His promises to us. God always keeps His promises! In our Bible story today, God promised to take care of Paul when he was in a dangerous situation. Listen to hear how God kept His promise. Bible Story Paul was Shipwrecked (Acts 27-28:1-2) Paul and his friends were on a boat headed for the city of Rome. Paul was on the boat as a prisoner because certain people did not want him to preach about Jesus. He was to appear before a man called Caesar, the highest authority in the land. Caesar would decide whether or not Paul would stay in prison. As the big ship sailed over the waters, the winds grew very strong. The boat rocked back and forth over the water. Finally the ship came to a safe place to stop and rest. The captain had to decide if they would stay in the harbor or continue to sail on. Paul did not think it was a good idea to keep going, so he advised the captain, If we continue to sail, we will not be safe. We will lose all we are carrying and maybe even our lives! But the captain did not listen to Paul and decided to continue to sail. After only a little while, the winds became very strong and the waves splashed higher and higher. The boat was almost knocked over! For many days the men on the ship did not see the sun or the stars. The rain poured down heavily and the ship rocked back and forth on the sea. The men threw much of their cargo overboard. They were very afraid. One night an angel came to Paul and said, Don t be afraid, Paul. God is going to take care of all of you. Paul believed God would do as He promised. He told the captain and the men what the angel had said. This time they listened to Paul and followed the instructions he gave to keep them safe. Many days later, the men spotted an island and tried to steer the ship so it would not hit the ground and break apart. It hit hard against some rocks and sand anyway, and the ship was torn into pieces because of the pounding of the waves. Even though this happened, all the men made it safely to the island. The people on the island showed them kindness; they gave them food to eat and made a fire to keep them warm. God kept His promise to Paul. The Lord had plans for Paul to tell many more people about Jesus. Talk Time 1. Show the teaching picture for today s Bible story. Ask the following: Why was Paul a prisoner? What happened while Paul and the men who were with him were on the boat? What did the angel tell Paul God would do? How did God keep His promise? 2. Say today s Bible Phrase together, God who promised is faithful (Hebrews 10:23). Express to the boys and girls that we always can believe God will keep His promises. Comment that one of God s promises is God loves us always Psalm 107:1. Express that no matter what we do, God always loves us. 3. Close the Bible Story Time in prayer, thanking God that He always keeps His promises. 4. Direct children to Craft Time. Game Time/Dismissal Bible Phrase Memory Game 6 index cards What to Do: Print each word of the Bible Phrase God who promised is faithful and the reference, Hebrews 10:23, on an index card. Number the cards in the correct order. Invite children to sit in a circle in the Game Time area. Lay the cards face up on the floor in the center of the circle. Say the Bible Phrase together. The game can be played several ways: 1) Mix up the cards and practice putting them in order; then say the verse. 2) Lay the cards face down and after saying the verse, ask children to close their eyes. Take a card away. Ask the children to open their eyes and identify the number or word that is missing. Say the verse again and continue with the same process taking a card away during each round. At the close of the activity, remind boys and girls of God s faithfulness to take care of Paul when his ship wrecked. Dismiss children when parents arrive. Be sure to follow your church s security guidelines. God s Unfolding Story for Older Preschoolers, Copyright 2013 - SundaySchoolZone.com NT11 Lesson 2 Hour A Page 4
