First, my congratulations go out to all the officers who were elected at the last meeting to lead this Assembly for the next fraternal year. They will need and will expect the help of the membership to assist them to have a successful year. To my successor, Mike Meehan, I pledge to you my offer of cooperation in anything I can help you with. I will try to stay out of your way, but, I will always be willing to help. During the past fraternal year, we had some trying and difficult to events, but for the most part, it has been a very good year for our Assembly. I would like to thank all of you who participated and helped along the way both as Color Corps members or those who worked behind the scenes. In particular, I would like to single out Mike Meehan, Mike Horten and Raleigh Cooper for their help. I would encourage those members who were not so active last year (or even longer) to become more engaged in our activities meetings, prayer services/family socials, honor guard/color corps events, corporate communions, etc. Except for funerals, all of our events are listed on our website, announced by e-mail or by telephone calls. We have two dates to remember still on the calendar for June. First, we have the Corporate Communion/Corpus Christi Procession at the Basilica on June 3 rd, and, second, the events and the scheduled for Flag Day, June 14 th Officer Installation, Community Picnic and the Flag Retirement Ceremony. We need Sir Knights to show up in Regalia to escort the flags to the Inspecting Officers. The entire Catholic community is invited to these events. Our Assembly will be hosting an Exemplification this year on March 16 th. While this is a 4 th Degree event, and we must get worthy members of our councils through the second and third degrees, we must also recruit new member for our councils. This is the only way we can insure that we have members who will be able to sustain the Order in the future Finally, I want to wish each of you a very safe and happy 4 th of July holiday. Remember those who gave and continue to insure your liberties we enjoy in this country. VIVAT JESUS Bill Soffe
CAPTAINS COMMENTS St. Augustine, one of the Roman Catholic Church s early fathers, relates an encounter he had on a beach in North Africa that makes a point. His story in his book The City of God (written about 426 AD) that one day he was walking along beach thinking about what was the nature of God when he came upon a small child that had dug a hole in the sandy beach and was running back and forth to the ocean trying to fill his hole with the ocean. When St. Augustine asked the child what he was doing the child told him he was putting the ocean into the hole. Of course the saint told him that this was impossible to do, the child responded that neither was it possible to understand the nature of God and he disappeared. The saint realized that he was being told by God through an angle a truth. The nature of God is truly fascinating, the traditional view is Michelangelo s bearded old man of the Sistine Chapel which is widely accepted and widely broadcast. Some feminists claim God is a she, some say he is darker skinned or more oriental. Humans picture the creator as being more like ourselves, the same for Heaven and Hell. It is not God s fault we have these paradigms, it s our simple way to relate to God. We can t envision beyond our experiences. I ve been reading a lot of Cosmology and Quantum Physics lately. When you ask what happened before the Big Bang you find a completely different set of paradigms for seeing the world we experience. Before the Big Band there was no space time. God existed prior to the Big Bang and prior to time and space, God exists outside spacetime. To God all the past, present and future might exist at once. There is order and rules to the forces that make up creation down through to the sub-atomic levels layers of creation that Isaac Newton could not imagine. God is above the Heisenberg Principal; for God knows where every electron is and how fast it is moving. Simply put, we experience our reality as time in a way that we see as an eternal progression of hours in one direction, but this is our situational experience, for time speeds up or slows down around large objects, and speed affects time. There are stars and planetary bodies that are tearing themselves apart through extreme gravity forces these make our concept of Hell seem mild. There is a cold vastness out there that we are just being able to perceive. We are on the beach and dipping our toes into the ocean of knowledge. None of these discoveries conflicts with our theologies; for the God that can command sub-atomic particles in their orbits or how galaxies behave can easily transubstantiate. We must be very special to God for he is powerfully in love with us, so much so that he sent his son to redeem us and bring us back to His love. In some future time we might envision God differently than we do today because we grew up. God is eternal. The more questions we answer and we find out the more we are aware of what we do not know. St. Augustine s little messenger is correct we cannot conceive the nature of God. God is such a small word for such an unfathomable mystery. Vivat Jesus, Mike Meehan UPDATE ON SEMINARIAN MATTHEW DONAHUE Our adopted seminarian Matthew Donahue will continue his studies for the Priesthood at the Pontifical College of North America in Rome, Italy.
