October Mission to Haiti

Ridge Street * Marquette * Michigan 49855 * (906) 226-2912 October Mission to Haiti Since the devastating January 12 earthquake in Haiti, much relief and recovery still needs to be done, but people are building for the future as well. In early October, I will leave for a 3-4-week mission representing St. Paul's and our diocese. This trip will include a potpourri of activities. I'll start on the Island of La Gonâve as an interpreter and go-fer for a medical team from Covenant Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. Then I'll return to the mainland and hike up to Crochu, our partner community in the mountains, where I'll have three main projects: a water resources assessment for the small villages highest in the mountains where we are looking into the possibility of building a system of gutters and cisterns to be managed by a women's water cooperative assisting a medical mission from Friends of Haiti, a Catholic-based relief and development organization out of Green Bay serving as an in-field consultant to a clergy spouses group from the Diocese of Alabama who are starting a school lunch program for the students (grades kindergarten to 6th) and teachers at St. Alban's Episcopal School. Many children here get only one small meal a day, and a hot lunch will be a big boost to children's nutrition. While there, we hope to help the people in the community start a local microenterprise, creating Christmas and note cards to sell and help support the school lunch program. In addition, I'll make plans with my friends in Crochu for a small medical-exploratory team to visit for about a week in January. This would enable more people from St. Paul's and our diocese to work and worship with our sisters and brothers here and to learn firsthand about the people and their needs and strengths. Finally, a couple of mules will carry two or three suitcases full of goods donated by people throughout the Diocese as well as the Marquette community and beyond including cloth and sewing supplies for the women's sewing co-op that we help support through Laurie's Fund for Haiti's Children and medical supplies for the small, local clinic that we also help support through Laurie's Fund. Here's our Wish List for this mission: a pair of size 9 1/2 men's running shoes (used but still in pretty good shape) for my host Louis-Jacques who walks miles every day in his roles as a community leader and as layleader, teacher and community health worker at St. Alban's one or two laptops, used but in good working order over-the-counter medicines especially Ibuprofen, children's Motrin, antibiotic and antifungal creams, anti-itch creams, antacids and Ora-gel (for sore teeth and gums). Room at the Inn by Iris Erickson and Pat Micklow Fall is here so once again St. Paul s will resume its ministry to Marquette s homeless. We will be hosting our homeless guests October 3 7 and will need your help to staff all shifts and provide meals for that week. We strive to see the face of Christ in each of the guests and serve them with love, dignity and respect. Sign-up for this week will begin on September 5 after our Sunday service. Re-formation of Bread + Wine Women s Annual Fall Retreat by Coralie Hambleton The Women s Ministry Council s Annual Fall Retreat is September 16-18, 2010 at Page Conference Center. We begin with check in at 5:00 pm and dinner at 6:00 pm. The retreat ends on Saturday at 3:00 pm. Maryfran Crist from the Diocese of Chicago will invite us to explore Mary, Martha and Me, Walking With Jesus and how these roles help us move through life s struggles, changes and our transformation in Christ. Maryfran is an RN, community health coordinator, and a clown. She has learned that humor and laughter are helpful in dealing with all life experiences. If you know Maryfran and have been challenged and entertained by her, spread the word; we don t want anyone to miss this wonderful opportunity for growth and fellowship. We will worship together using the Anglican Rosary on Thursday night. If you have a Rosary please bring it with you; otherwise, we will have some to use, or possibly to make. We will also be sharing Compline, Morning and Evening Prayer and the Eucharist as an integral part of our time together. Part of the fun and fellowship of this retreat is preparing our meals together. We began a new tradition last year making Stone Soup and we ask you to bring one dry ingredient or vegetable (other than beans) to throw into our pot. Soup maestro Teena Maki brings and adds the other necessary ingredients and it becomes a harmony for your taste buds. Bring a snack to pass if you like. All other food will be provided. Page provides all linens and bedding. Simply bring your clothes and personal items and look forward to a wonderful time. Register early for the Kelsey Cottage which sleeps 12 and is first come/ first served. The cabins are able to be heated and will be available. Cost is 100.00 per person. 2010 Women s Fall Retreat REGISTRATION FORM Name : Address: by Bryan Spencer Spring brought the beginning of the food fellowship "Bread + Wine - St. Paul's Episcopal Gourmands" for the food enthusiasts among us. The idea includes a round robin rotation of host homes/kitchens providing the main course, with eight to ten guests rounding out the theme by contributing complementary courses, stories and enjoyment to the shared meal. The few groups which organized dinners March through June reported goodly experiences of eating and being merry. The autumn Bread + Wine spreadsheet for September through November is under construction. Scrip Card Information by Barb Carpenter In the coming, months a Scrip Card Program will be available at St. Paul s Parish. Participation in this program will provide extra money each month for our church without costing you any money. When you purchase a Scrip Card (which is like a gift card or gift certificate) for a business, you will pay full face value for it. If it s worth $25.00, you will pay $25.00 and get $25.00 worth of merchandise or service in return. St. Paul s will buy the cards and pay less than face value. For example, Econo Foods will give us a 3% profit, so we will pay $97.00 for cards worth $100.00. The extra $3.00 is profit for St. Paul s. Each business that we contact will decide what profit margin they will give to us. We will provide an order form with the participating businesses listed. You would fill out the order form and return it to St. Paul s with a check or money order for the amount you ordered. We would buy these cards from the businesses and you would pick them up within a week. The more families participating, the more money St. Paul s will make. This money will be used to supplement our monthly income so we can meet our monthly expenses and not withdraw as much from our trusts. This is a great money making opportunity for us without asking for a donation. Please spread the word to family, friends and neighbors. The more we sell, the more money we make. We are offering them to the church membership first. A donation of $10.00 is suggested per chair. If you would like one that needs repair, a $3.00 donation is suggested. Sunday Parish Brunch Returns September 26 by Chris Niles A great big Thank You to all who have gathered at our table for the monthly parish brunches. The monetary donations have helped a lot in defraying food costs and the cleanup crews have been awesome! We really could not do this without your help. After taking June, July and August off, we will be back again on the last Sunday in September (the 26 th ). We hope you have enjoyed the Sunday brunches as much as we have enjoyed our part in this food and fellowship ministry. Remember that we now serve during coffee hour, instead of before church service. Hope your summer was spectacular with butterfly mornings and forget-me-knot afternoons.

From Bob Railey s Pen: Seasonal Planning The close date for folks to sign up to be part of a seasonal planning team for after-epiphany is September 12. With Easter 2011 falling very late, the after-epiphany season will be as long as it ever is (nine Sundays). Any who have ideas of how areas of parish life (especially beyond worship, which always has seasonal emphasis) can reflect this green season of the Incarnational block of seasons are invited to be part of the team. Highlights of the after-epiphany season include the week for Christian unity (which we at St. Paul s tend to expand into a week for inter-faith unity), and that traditional Anglican, pre-lent blowout opportunity Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras). The sign-up display is posted on the sign-up bulletin board in the chapel hallway. The display will remain posted into February for the remaining seasons of the 2010-2011 liturgical year. Ministry Support Team It has been far too long since we have had significant attendance at an MST meeting. As long as Kevin is heavily involved with eastern region congregations, we are limited to the first Sunday of the month. There is much accumulated business and information sharing that needs to be done. All commissioned members are expected to attend. In addition, the following are strongly encouraged to attend: all LifeCycles members; new Covenant members resulting from the recent, second-generation discernment; and others who have significant roles in any ministry area within St. Paul s. We will be meeting Sunday, September 5 at 9:00 a.m. in the chapel. Kevin scoured his calendar for a time more user-friendly than Labor Day weekend, but nothing else worked. As usual, the Marquette County campaign is being organized by our ecumenical partners of ELCA. Also as usual, all monies collected go 75% to fight world-wide hunger (through CROP, an agency of Church World Service) and 25% to local food pantries (the same ones who benefit from our weekly food donations). Walkers are encouraged to pick up envelopes early to have maximum opportunity to collect contributions from the various communities you belong to (work, school, service clubs, recreational groups, etc.). The official time and place of the Hunger Walk is: Sunday, October 3, 2:00 p.m., meeting at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ishpeming and walking a portion of the Heritage Trail. As usual, any who cannot walk at that time and place may walk at their own convenience. Fall Quarter Schedule The usual display for October through December is now posted on the sign-up bulletin board in the chapel hallway; it will remain there through September 12. You may use the schedule to sign up for specific role(s) on specific dates; you may use the appropriate rosters to indicate when you should not be scheduled or to increase (or decrease) your level of involvement.
