Jesus Christ is the one and true hero How many of us have gone to the theater to enjoy a good movie? I think most of us go to relax and enjoy a good time, whether it is watching an action, horror, comedy, science fiction, or superhero movie. I confess that I like the movies a lot, and I am fascinated by the superheroes movies. Superman is one of those heroes that I wanted to be when I was a child and that possibly some of you wanted to be as well. But the problem with the movies is that when the movie is over, life continues its course. Even though Superman may have saved the world, our life continues in the same form, with the same routine that sometimes is nonsensical. Some months ago, we Christians, lived the Holy Week where we celebrated the passion, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the only true hero because with His death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead, He has saved all of us. In other words, He has saved the whole world. And although we have certainly seen many movies about the life of Jesus of Nazareth, we know and strongly belief that Jesus is not a character invented by a writer and played by a Hollywood actor, but He is a real person who loves us immensely. He protects us from our enemies as a shepherd protects his sheep from the wolf that wants to devour them, just as the Lord Jesus tells us: "I give my life for my sheep" (Jn. 10,14). The Lord Jesus takes cares of us always and we should always follow him. In the same way Christ Jesus, by the immense love He has for us, sends the Holy Ghost and with this, we can obey the Lord through our love for Him and for our brothers and sisters. Jesus says: "As the Father loves me, so I love you. Remain in my love." (Jn. 15:9). That is why Christ is the true hero among heroes because He is not a selfish being who wants power only for himself, but He gives us his power, His strength so that we may follow his steps and make of this world a better one. When a mother worries about her children, when a teacher prepares their lessons with care so that their students may learn, when a police officer ensures the safety of the citizens, and when a priest celebrates the Eucharist with love then we are all heroes because we have in us the same Spirit of Christ. And when we manifest the Holy Spirit in our lives, we are true witnesses of the resurrection of the Lord. September 16th 2018 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend Mass Schedule St. Patrick's (SPC) N. OLOL Events Calendar From the Parish Office Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) Sharing Our Blessings As we begin the 2018-19 Catholic Ministries Appeal Thanks to all who have made the past appeals a success. Diocesan campaign raised more than $6.44 million the most in CMA history. The average gift per household increased for the 13 th straight year to $242. Our parish goal has been established at $60,706 which is the basic 3% increase over last years goal. Thanks to all who have enabled us to reach the goals over the years. One point of interest is that the diocesan participation rate last year was only 28%. Our parish participation rate was 26.67%. Each year our goal goes up & it would be a big help if everyone contributed something. If you do not receive a letter from the diocese & would like to contribute there are envelopes at the doors of the worship sites. You can mail your contribution to the diocese or drop them into the collection. On any check or envelope please put #359 which is our parish ID number. Please pray & support the CMA in the weeks ahead. An Evangelization & Catechesis committee is needed. Do you have ideas about how to make our Parish better? Call Patty at the Parish office to get more information on how to become part of this committee. Throughout the month we are celebrating the transfer of the faith, catechesis. Children s Liturgy of the Word catechists, Anna Delibertis and Sandy Moniot were recognized on 9/9. On 9/16, we acknowledge the role of parents and guardians because they share the Catholic faith with their families by their words and actions. But Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all of us to build the community of faith by rededicating ourselves to the mission of handing it on and being a witness to the Gospel. On this day consider the ways we are witnesses for Jesus Christ. We also thank the teachers and staff at St. Michael s School, who will be recognized on 9/21 at the 11AM Mass. Page 3 of 6

In 305 AD, during the Roman persecution of Christians, he hid many of his parishioners in salt mines. On a visit to them, he was caught and tortured. He was thrown alive into a furnace, but miraculously did not burn! The next day he was put into a pit of starved bears. At his command, the bears laid down and did not attack! He was beheaded the next day. Two vials of his blood were captured and taken to Naples to serve as relics. One thousand years later and three times a year to this day, when his dried blood is exposed, it boils! Living a holy life worked for him. What can God do with us?
