January 22, 2017 Meditation To reach people we must appreciate and adapt to their culture, but we must also challenge and confront it. This is based on the biblical teaching that all cultures have God s grace and natural revelation in them, yet they are also in rebellious idolatry. If we overadapt to a culture, we have accepted the culture s idols. If, however, we underadapt to a culture, we may have turned our own culture into an idol, an absolute. - Tim Keller Readings to help you prepare to worship, as Jesus said, in spirit and in truth. When you hear the first song begin, please come take a seat.

The Holy God is present with us in worship, and He invites us to come to Him with true adoration. Before I Knew Words and music: Kirk Ward 2002 Kirk Ward Music Psalm 67 Please stand if able. 2 God calls us into His presence to worship Song of Gathering Before I knew what freedom was, Jesus set me free. With no control, a slave to sin, God was my enemy. But then He broke my rusty chains to share eternity. Before I knew what freedom was, Jesus set me free. Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Jesus set me free! Before I knew what loving was, He showed His love for me. He knew me in my mother s womb, He knew my sinful tendencies. Adopted by His saving grace into His family. Before I knew what loving was, He showed His love for me. Call to Worship Leader: Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, He showed His love for me! Before I knew what living was, He gave His life for me. I was defeated in my sins, death had the victory. Then all my guilt was placed on Him, That day on Calvary. Before I knew what living was, He gave His life for me. Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, He gave His life for me! Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Jesus set me free! May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, that your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations. People: Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you! Leader: Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth. People: Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you! Leader: The earth has yielded its increase; God, our God, shall bless us. People: God shall bless us; let all the ends of the earth fear him!

Song of Praise All hail the power of Jesus Name! Let angels prostrate fall; Bring forth the royal diadem, Bring forth the royal diadem, Ye chosen seed of Israel s race, ye ransomed from the fall, Hail Him Who saves you by His grace, Hail Him Who saves you by His grace, Let ev ry tribe and ev ry tongue to Him their hearts enthrall. Lift high the universal song, Lift high the universal song, O that, with yonder sacred throng, we at His feet may fall, Join in the everlasting song, Join in the everlasting song, All Hail the Power of Jesus Name Words: Edward Perronet, John Rippon Music: Oliver Holden Public domain Isaiah 66:18 1 Timothy 2:5-6 Revelation 7:11-12 A diadem is a crown. Confession of Sin Most merciful Father, we have sinned against You this week. Forgive us for coldness, impatience, and tempers out of control, for chasing comfort and status, for hard-heartedness toward our neighbors, for rebelling against Your loving rule, refusing Your care, and doubting Your love. Forgive us, gracious Lord, on account of the sacrifice of Christ! By Your Spirit, grow us in holiness, kindness, and joy. Deepen our gratitude, and help us see Your many gifts to us. Increase our worship, and teach us contentment in all circumstances. Help us do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with You. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. A time to be honest with God about our need for forgiveness. Please read together Silent Confession Assurance of Pardon The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against Him... We do not make requests of You because we are righteous, but because of Your great mercy. Daniel 9:9, 18 3

We Are Not Overcome Words and music: Isaac Wardell, Robert Heiskell 2011 Job 1:21 Lamentations 3 Song of Renewal Because of His great love, We are not overcome! Because of His great love, We are not overcome! Flesh will fail, and bones will break; Thieves will steal, the earth will shake. Night will fall, the light will fade; The Lord will give and take away. Put no trust in the earth, In the sod you stand upon. Flowers fade into dust; The Lord will make a place for us. Have no fear for your life, Turn your cheek, turn your cheek. Bear the yoke of love and death, The Lord will give life and breath. Scripture Reading He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! John 3:31-36 Song of Preparation I am weak but Thou art strong; Jesus, keep me from all wrong; I ll be satisfied as long As I walk, dear Lord, close to Thee. Just a closer walk with Thee, Grant it, Jesus, this my plea, Daily walking close to Thee, Let it be, dear Lord, let it be. Through this world of toil and snares, If I falter, Lord, who cares? Who with me my burden shares? None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee. When my feeble life is o er, Time for me will be no more; Guide me gently, safely o er, to Thy kingdom shore, to Thy shore! (x2) Just a Closer Walk Words and music: John C. Hallett Public domain 5

Our mind, body, and spirit are nourished with food that does not perish. God feeds us with His Word Sermon Text 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 19 For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. 20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. 21 To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. 23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings. Isaiah 40:8 Today s sermon is given by Pastor Matt Lorish. Leader: The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. People: Praise be to God! Sermon We encourage you to use this space to take notes or write questions. 6

Invitation to the Lord s Supper Parents who would like for their nursery-aged children to be prayed for during communion should pick them up at this time. Words of Institution The Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. Leader: Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of our faith: People: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. 1 Corinthians 11:23b-26 The Lord s Supper Gluten-free, nut-free wafers are located in the wooden boxes. If you would like, a communion distributor will pray for your children. At the back of the fellowship hall is someone ready to pray with and for you. As others take communion please feel free to pray, sing along, or talk quietly with your neighbor. Song of Communion There is life in the blood of the Lamb who was slain. There is power, there is power in His name. There is love pouring out of the wounds that were made, Pouring out, pouring over our shame. So praise the God who saves! Praise the God who bled! Praise the God who was nailed to a tree, And wore our sins upon His head. There is truth in His body, raised that third day. There is joy in a stone rolled away. There is hope pouring out of the tomb where He lay, Pouring out, pouring over the grave. There is life in the blood of the Lamb who was slain. There is power, there is power in His name. So praise the God who saves! Praise the God who bled! Praise the God who was nailed to a tree, And wore our sins... God Who Saves Words and music: Aaron Senseman 2001 Stuntman Music 7
