Signs of Life Last summer we did some landscaping in our yard, which included transplanting three shrubs. Diane created the design and did most of the work, and I pretty much just dug holes (it s what I m best at.) I had a sense of impending doom as I prepared to move the plants. I was certain that I d commit herbicide and kill them all. To ease my fears, we purchased a product that is suppose to help reduce transplant shock. Several weeks after the relocation, two of the plants seemed to be thriving but the third was not. I suggested that we pull it out and admit defeat. However, Diane had hope and thought we should wait and see. I mostly forgot about it except when I piled snow on top of it this past winter. Low and behold, a few months later after some sunshine and water, there are now signs of life. It s so easy to give up and concede defeat when it appears that things aren t going as we might think they ought to. And yet, if we patiently endure we will reap a harvest
that includes character-strength and confident- hope. Of course, if this was easy, everyone would do it. It is not easy, but it is possible with God being our helper. For me, problems arise when I try to endure in my own strength which then results in frustration and discouragement. It is when I surrender to God and follow His way vs. my own that He strengthens me to patiently endure. Then I begin to distinguish between what I want and what God wants; thus my character is refined. Finally, hope takes root and replaces my attitude of resignation. (See Romans 5:3-5) God specializes in resurrection. When everyone else declares; it s over, God says, I m just beginning. A long time ago, after the nation of Judah had been exiled and left for dead, God gave the prophet Isaiah a word picture of hope and new life for his people. Isaiah said, Out of the stump of David s family will grow a shoot yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root. (Isaiah 11:1) That s a vivid picture: an old stump considered dead, but yet a new branch grows from it. Is there something you have been trying to patiently wait for, but it seems that it will never come? Possibly it is a person or a relationship that you are ready to sign off. Have you considered that God may want to grow a new shoot from an old stump. Please allow me to encourage you to not give up just yet. As my bride said about the shrub I was ready to pull out of the ground, wait and see. What if you were to wait, watch, and pray? Stay the course and don t give up.
