What Does it Mean to be Thankful? It s hard to believe, but it s almost Thanksgiving. The fourth Thursday in November is upon us, and with it that time of year we call the holidays have begun. Christmas will be here, and another year will be gone in a New York minute. This is a time of year when we pause and remember certain things: blessings, faith, family, time s passing, etc. As we celebrate Thanksgiving, perhaps we d do well to remember that thanksgiving is more than a turkey dinner or a football game or the launch of the Christmas season. Thanksgiving is more than a holiday or a tradition. Thanksgiving is several things: it is an acknowledgement to God of the things with which He has blessed us--so it is an acknowledgement of His power as Creator and Provider. Thus, it is an act of worship whereby we remind ourselves of how little we are and how great God is! But, in its essence, thanksgiving is a matter of the heart. A thankful heart will always find a way to express thanks! Remember the 10 lepers Christ Jesus healed? The one who was truly thankful took the time to find the Lord to express thanks (Luke 17). Jesus said, the mouth speaks (expresses) out of the abundance (overflow) of what is in the heart. To truly celebrate thanksgiving and all that name implies, we must have a thankful heart. So, how does one develop a heart of thanksgiving? By reminding ourselves that we deserve judgment and He has given us grace! Again, it goes back to worship: perhaps the Psalmist is our best guide in this endeavor. Time and time again, David and others remind us to give thanks to the LORD. Why? Because all that is good in our lives is because of His provision and mercy! Because we deserve far less than the good things that we have. Because He has given His only Son that we might be forgiven and reconciled to Him! Listen to these scriptural admonitions regarding thanksgiving: 1 Chron. 16:34: O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever! Psalm 18:49: Therefore, I will give thanks to you, O LORD among the Gentiles, and sing praises to Your Name. Ps. 30:12: O LORD my God, I will give thanks to You forever. Ps. 75:1: We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks! For Your wondrous works declare that Your Name is near. Ps. 100:4 Be thankful unto Him and bless His Name! Mark 14: 23 Then He [Jesus] took the cup, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them... 2 Corinthians 9:15: Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift! Note that the words, thank, thanks, thanked, thankful, thankfulness, and thanksgiving or its derivatives appear some 140 times in Scripture. The point is simple: We are to be a thankful people because we live and exist at the grace and mercy of our marvelous Creator Who also desired to be our Savior when we rebelled against Him! So, what does it mean to be thankful? It means to celebrate this holiday with our hearts and not merely with our stomachs. It means to take our rightful place before God and joyfully acknowledge His greatness (This is what worship is). It means to abandon all pride and realize that everything good in our lives is a gift from Him. It is fitting that Thanksgiving ushers in the Christmas season. Indeed, we should tread lightly and reverently toward that stable long ago and fall on our faces before the One Who came and died that we might have life in His Holy Name! I am thankful for each of you; I am thankful for my family; I am thankful for my health; I am thankful for our freedoms; I am thankful for ministry but, above all, I am thankful both to and for Jesus without whom all other things would be meaningless!

RBA Appalachian Mountain Ministry November 2017 Newsletter Pete Soots, Director Our God is an awesome God. He blesses above and beyond. As a nation we are so blessed to have what we have, however, there are many people in this wonderful nation that do not have what we have in Warner Robins and many other cities in this fabulous nation. It is hard to believe that in this wonderful nation of ours we have people that are sleeping on bare floors, have little furniture, food, and clothing to wear in the frigid weather that we have in some parts of this nation and especially in the Appalachian Mountain area. This ministry was started to help these people who are less fortunate than us to have a little more than they can afford. It has grown from 58 pounds the first year to an estimated 880,000 pounds in 2017. This achievement could not be met without the support of Rehoboth Baptist Association, Disaster Relief, without the commitment of many workers who come weekly and sometimes twice and even three times a week to pack and load trucks to move the material to the needed areas. Additionally, we have some very good financial supporters who allow the material to be transported to the sites in the mountains. However, as the donations grow so does the need for trucks to move the material. We have been using semi-trucks because of the savings that we have achieved in the cost of shipping. The cost has been cut in more than half, and even more if you count the maintenance that is not incurred on our truck from disaster preparedness. The amount of donations has impacted the budget that we have been working with. We are asking each church and each person to seriously consider praying to Our Father in Heaven for the support you would be able to provide on a one-time donation or a monthly donation to help keep this ministry supporting a part of our nation that is in great need of the items we have sent and are sending to them. We have three sites in the mountains who work to keep their children interested in staying in school and attending on a regular basis. The toys we provide helps to do that. The sites require each child to attend for 20 days straight with no tardiness, and no disciplinary actions being taken, and if they achieve this goal they are allowed to purchase with monopoly dollars items from the closet that we have sent. In the past it has been very few children getting to do this but last month 73 children achieved the goal because they had an opportunity to receive a gift. This also teaches them how to use money which be helpful throughout their life. This time of the year there is a great need for coats, sweaters, gloves, and hats so if you have any or could purchase on please bring it over to the packing shed and we will get it on the first truck that goes thanks. Please help us with a donation for this ministry. You can make a tax deduction for your donation by sending a check to Rehoboth Baptist Association with Appalachian Ministry in the Mark For block. Thank you so much for your prayers and your donations. If we can ever be of help to any of your people, please do not hesitate to call on us and we will do everything through the power of God to help them. Serving a Mighty God, Pete Soots, Director Appalachian Mountain Ministry (478-396-9316)

I call our Seminary extension center the most overlooked opportunity in central Georgia. In years past, one had to relocate several states to have the educational opportunity that is right in our front door. New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary is a Southern Baptist, fully accredited, theologically conservative institution of higher learning. At Central Baptist in Warner Robins (our South Georgia host church), we have 3 programs that can fit anyone: Certificate--this is for those who want to learn about the Scriptures and Christian Doctrine. It is a two-year course of study that consists of 8 courses that are 8 weeks long each. These classes meet one night a week and only cost $100 each. They can be applied toward an Associate or Bachelor degree. Bachelor--This is a course of study offered through NOBTS Leavell College. We have a partnership with MGTC to offer classes in basic subjects in order to be able to complete a Baccalaureate degree. This is worthwhile for those who have never finished college or who want to qualify for entrance into the Master of Divinity program. Master of Divinity--This program is the standard in the theological field for equipping pastors and ministers. It is very thorough in its training and covers Biblical studies, counseling, Hebrew, Greek, Philosophy, church history, etc. The M.Div. is a worthwhile pursuit for anyone called to ministry. Next classes begin January 22, 2018 (Certificate) Come on, what are you waiting for? Every Christian can and needs to grow in our knowledge of the Scriptures and our Lord. Whether you re a Sunday School teacher, new Christian, person called to ministry, or a longtime Christian who wants to grow, NOBTS South Georgia in Warner Robins has a place for you. Please contact Tim Millwood at: 478-987-0005 to find out more information. There s still time--but don t delay.

For guidance in your next step with seminary call Rev. Tim Millwood today at 478-987-0005. Consider New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary Representative, Tim Millwood 478-987- 0005. God has called you to serve Him, and now you need biblical and theological preparation to pursue that call. A variety of educational options are available to you, ranging from theological seminaries and divinity schools to Bible colleges and church-based training programs. What do you look for in a school that best suits your ministry objectives? The following guide may be helpful in determining your next important steps. Theological Seminary A theological seminary educates students for leadership roles in Christian ministry, such as pastors, missionaries, church planters, counselors and other avenues of service to the Church. Its curriculum places strong emphasis on study and understanding of the Bible and theology, spiritual formation and practical tools for church ministry. Divinity School A divinity school is usually affiliated with a university. Like a law or medical school, a divinity school is essentially a theological division within a larger university. Its students can take courses unrelated to theological education. Some are more focused on the academic study of religion and Christianity, preparing students to serve in academic, religious and non-sectarian settings, while others are more pastorally-focused. Theological seminaries and divinity schools provide graduate level education, offering degrees such as Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Religion, Master of Christian Counseling and many more. A bachelor s degree is required for admission. Divinity and theological schools are typically accredited by a federal agency, and are eligible for federally-funded student loans. Bible College Bible colleges were once very prevalent throughout the U.S. Fewer exist today. Bible colleges provide undergraduate education, and usually require a high school education for admission. The curriculum is based largely on the Bible, with many entry-level courses available in Old and New Testament. Some schools may teach biblical languages. Some Bible colleges are not accredited, and, hence, not eligible for federal student loans. However, there are exceptions. Multnomah Bible College in Portland, OR, is an example of an accredited evangelical Bible college. Bible Institutes Bible institutes typically provide training for people wanting to understand the Bible better. In most instances, these schools are not accredited, and may not require a high school degree for admission. Some online programs fall in this category. Church-Based Seminary Education A relatively recent trend is the development of seminaries by churches. Still rare in the U.S., these schools may offer both undergraduate and graduate degrees that prepare students to understand and apply the Bible and theology in vocational ministry. Typically, they are not accredited.
