SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 2, 2017 WE ASSEMBLE IN GOD S NAME PRELUDE Melody Horatio W. Parker WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP (adapted from Psalm) One: How long must we feel that you have forgotten us, O Lord? All: How long must we bear such deep pain in our souls? One: Answer us, O Lord my God! Look at us, we beg you! All: Let us see your light; give hope to our hearts! One: Yet we still will sing praises to you, O Lord, because you have been so generous with us in the past, and you are faithful. All: Because you have been so faithful, we come to worship you and sing with joy. *HYMN # 307 God of Grace and God of Glory CWM RHONDDA *PRAYER OF CONFESSION Rev. Dr. Elizabeth L. Downs Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We blame you when things in our lives go wrong and we blame others for our misfortune and unhappiness; we fear our doubt and our certainty; we have not loved you or neighbor as you have commanded. We are afraid to walk into the unknown in your name, depending solely on you, for we cannot foresee the outcome. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be *SILENT CONFESSION Lead us that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. *DECLARATION OF GOD S FORGIVENESS Rev. Dr. Elizabeth L. Downs Hear the Good News....... In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God. Alleluia! Amen. *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE # 447 We Are Forgiven WE ARE FORGIVEN We are forgiven. We are forgiven. Thanks be to God, Thanks be to God. We are forgiven. We are forgiven. Thanks be to God, Thanks be to God. 2

OFFERING OF THE PLEDGES AND GIFTS OF THE PEOPLE OFFERTORY The Shepherd s Psalm Daniel Protheroe (The text is based on Psalm 23) *OFFERTORY RESPONSE # 717 For the Life That You Have Given PLEADING SAVIOR *PRAYER OF THANKS WE GO FORTH IN GOD S NAME *HYMN # 338 O Beautiful for Spacious Skies MATERNA *CHARGE AND BLESSING POSTLUDE La Réjouissance G.F. Handel (The postlude is offered as an instrumental prayer, not a performance. You are invited to remain seated; if you wish to depart, please do so quietly, remembering those who are still worshipping.) + + + *Please rise in body, mind, or spirit. Thank you for gathering with us for worship this morning. Following worship, there will be a coffee hour in the small dining area. Please join us! Today s music draws on the contributions of composers from the United States and the British Isles. The Prelude is by Horatio William Parker (1863-1919), an American composer, organist and teacher who taught the undergraduate Charles Ives at Yale University. The Postlude is from Music for the Royal Fireworks by G.F. Handel, written for King George II of Great Britain in 1749. Handel was born in Germany but spent the bulk of his career in London. Daniel Protheroe (1866-1934) emigrated from Wales to the U.S. at age 19, living in Scranton, Milwaukee and Chicago. Wallingford Riegger (1885-1961) lived and worked in New York City. His arrangement of this piece by German composer Carl Bohm was tucked away in the choir library until the recent renovation and cataloguing of all the music stored there. 4
