The One He Loves Hebrews 12:1-13

Jonah 2:1-3 1 Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish:

Jonah 2:1-3 1 Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish:

Jonah 2:1-3 2 I called to the Lord in my distress, and he answered me. I cried out for help from deep inside Sheol; you heard my voice.

Jonah 2:1-3 3 You threw me into the depths, into the heart of the seas, and the current overcame me. All your breakers and your billows swept over me.

Why Hebrews 12?

Hebrews 12: Theology of God s Discipline Jonah 1-2: Story of God s Discipline

Outline: 1. The Race of Endurance 2. The Enemy of Endurance 3. The Goal of Endurance

1. The Race of Endurance

Hebrews 12:1-3 1 Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us,

Hebrews 12:1-3 2 keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith. For the joy that lay before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 12:1-3 3 For consider him who endured such hostility from sinners against himself, so that you won't grow weary and give up.

Hebrews 12:3 3 For consider him who endured such hostility from sinners against himself, so that you won't grow weary and give up.

Hebrews 12:12 12 Therefore, strengthen your tired hands and weakened knees.

The Race of Endurance 1. Reminding the Hebrews that the Christian life is a race of endurance.

The Race of Endurance 1. Reminding the Hebrews that the Christian life is a race of endurance. 2. Reminding the Hebrews that the endurance race is possible.

2 Kings 14:25 25 He restored Israel's border from Lebo-hamath as far as the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word the Lord, the God of Israel, had spoken through his servant, the prophet Jonah son of Amittai from Gath-hepher.

2. The Enemy of Endurance

Hebrews 12:4-8 4 In struggling against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

Hebrews 12:4-8 5 And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons: My son, do not take the Lord s discipline lightly or lose heart when you are reproved by him,

Hebrews 12:4-8 6 for the Lord disciplines the one he loves and punishes every son he receives.

Hebrews 12:4-8 7 Endure suffering as discipline: God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline?

Hebrews 12:4-8 8 But if you are without discipline which all receive then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

Hebrews 10:32-36 32 Remember the earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings.

Hebrews 10:32-36 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to taunts and afflictions, and at other times you were companions of those who were treated that way.

Hebrews 10:32-36 34 For you sympathized with the prisoners and accepted with joy the confiscation of your possessions, because you know that you yourselves have a better and enduring possession.

Hebrews 10:32-36 35 So don t throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.

Hebrews 10:32-36 36 For you need endurance, so that after you have done God s will, you may receive what was promised.

Pain: a. Pain can be productive.

Hebrews 12:11 11 No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Pain: a. Pain can be productive. b. Pain will be interpreted.

Hebrews 12:3-6 3 For consider him who endured such hostility from sinners against himself, so that you won't grow weary and give up.

Hebrews 12:7-8 7 Endure suffering as discipline: God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline?

Hebrews 12:7-8 8 But if you are without discipline-which all receive-then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

Three Modes of God Discipline: 1. Correction

Hebrews 12:5 5 And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons: My son, do not take the Lord's discipline lightly or lose heart when you are reproved by him.

Job 42:7 7 After the Lord had finished speaking to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Temanite: I am angry with you and your two friends, for you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.

Three Modes of God Discipline: 1. Correction 2. Protection

2 Corinthians 12:6-10 6 For if I want to boast, I wouldn t be a fool, because I would be telling the truth. But I will spare you, so that no one can credit me with something beyond what he sees in me or hears from me,

2 Corinthians 12:6-10 7 especially because of the extraordinary revelations. Therefore, so that I would not exalt myself, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to torment me so that I would not exalt myself.

Three Modes of God Discipline: 1. Correction 2. Protection 3. Instruction

2 Corinthians 1:3-6 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort.

2 Corinthians 1:3-6 4 He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

2 Corinthians 1:3-6 5 For just as the sufferings of Christ overflow to us, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.

2 Corinthians 1:3-6 6 If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings that we suffer.

Hebrews 2:10 10 For in bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was entirely appropriate that God-for whom and through whom all things exist-should make the source of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

Hebrews 5:8 8 Although he was the Son, he learned obedience from what he suffered.

Job 42:5 5 I had only heard about you before, but now I have seen you with my own eyes.

3. The Goal of Endurance

Hebrews 12:10-11 10 For they disciplined us for a short time based on what seemed good to them, but he does it for our benefit, so that we can share his holiness.

Hebrews 12:10-11 11 No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Application 1. Submit to the Father.

Hebrews 12:9 9 Furthermore, we had human fathers discipline us, and we respected them. Shouldn t we submit even more to the Father of spirits and live?

2 Corinthians 12:6-10 8 Concerning this, I pleaded with the Lord three times that it would leave me.

2 Corinthians 12:6-10 9 But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness. Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ s power may reside in me.

2 Corinthians 12:6-10 10 So I take pleasure in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and in difficulties, for the sake of Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Application 1. Submit to the Father. 2. Strengthen your tired hands and weakened knees.

Hebrews 12:12-13 12 Therefore, strengthen your tired hands and weakened knees,

Hebrews 12:12-13 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated but healed instead.
