Ron was born in Moberly, Missouri, attended seminary at the Graduate Seminary at Phillips University, Enid, Oklahoma, and received his M.Div. from San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo, California. Ordained as a Disciple minister, he served churches in Kansas, Missouri, and the Northbrae Community Church in Berkeley, California before moving back to the Kansas City area for retirement.
