Salem Lutheran Church 401 S. Lake St. Lake Mills IA 50450 Welcome to the House of the Lord Fourth Sunday in Lent March 26, 2017-8:30 a.m. ***Larger print bulletins are available from the ushers. PRELUDE Allegro Maestoso G.F. Handel BELLS ANNOUNCEMENTS CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS GATHERING During the season of Lent we are called to return to the Lord with all our heart. Let us confess our sin and seek reconciliation with God and neighbor. Silence for reflection and self-examination. Merciful God, you sent Jesus Christ to save the lost. We confess that we have strayed from you and turned aside from your way. We fail in love, neglect justice, and ignore your truth. Have mercy on us and wash away our sin. Create in us clean hearts for the sake of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Behold, now is the acceptable time; now is the day of salvation. Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. INTRODUCTION Baptism is sometimes called enlightenment. The gospel for this Sunday is the story of the man born blind healed by Christ. I was blind, but now I see, declares the man. In baptism God opens our eyes to see the truth of who we are: God s beloved sons and daughters. As David was anointed king of Israel, in baptism God anoints our head with oil, and calls us to bear witness to the light of Christ in our daily lives.

GATHERING SONG Christ, the Life of All the Living ELW #339 GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. HYMN OF PRAISE CANTICLE 13 [verse 1 (women), verse 2 (men), verse 3 (all)] PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Bend your ear to our prayers, Lord Christ, and come among us. By your gracious life and death for us, bring light into the darkness of our hearts, and anoint us with your Spirit, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. CHOIR ANTHEM God So Loved the World Senior Choir WORD FIRST READING 1 Samuel 16:1-13 Bible Page 288 Samuel anointed David even though he was the eighth-oldest son of Jesse and did not match his brothers in height or other physical characteristics. With the anointing came endowment with the Spirit of the Lord, designating David as the Lord s chosen successor to Saul. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. PSALM Psalm 23 (The Psalm is read responsively) You anoint my head with oil. (Ps. 23:5) 1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. 2 The LORD makes me lie down in green pastures and leads me beside still waters. 3 You restore my soul, O LORD, and guide me along right pathways for your name s sake. 4 Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil, and my cup is running over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. SECOND READING Ephesians 5:8-14 Bible Page 207 Because we now live in the divine light that is Jesus Christ, we conduct our lives in ways that reflect the light of Christ, so that our activity is truly pleasing to God. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION RESPONSE TO THE WORD PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. OFFERING MUSICAL OFFERING OFFERING SONG GOSPEL John 9:1-41 Bible Page 105 Jesus heals a man born blind, provoking a hostile reaction that he regards as spiritual blindness to the things of God. The holy gospel according to John the ninth chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel concludes: The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound ELW #779 AFFIRMATION OF FAITH I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Lifting our voices and turning toward God, let us pray for the church, the earth, and all who are in need. A brief silence. Please respond at the end of each petition: Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Into your hands, merciful God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your steadfast love; through Christ our Lord. Amen. OFFERING PRAYER Merciful God, receive the sacrifice of our praise and thanksgiving and the offering of our lives, that following in the way of the cross, we may know the joy of the resurrection; through Christ our Lord. Amen. THE LORD'S PRAYER Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

SENDING BLESSING May God who has called us forth from the dust of the earth, and claimed us as children of the light, strengthen you on your journey into life renewed. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord s face shine upon you with grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen. SENDING SONG Be Thou My Vision ELW #793 DISMISSAL Marked with the cross of Christ, go forth to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God. Afterwards he went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. He asked his disciples to watch and pray for an hour. Jesus went further into the garden and prayed Father, if it be possible take this cup from me. But not my will but Thine be done. After an hour, he went back to his disciples and found them asleep. He woke them and again asked them to watch and pray for an hour. He went back to pray to his heavenly Father. When he returned an hour later to his disciples they were still asleep. To commemorate Jesus hour of trail in the Garden of gethsemane, Salem Church will be holding a 24- hour prayer vigil in the chapel. It will take place from after the Maundy Thursday, April 13, 2017 until the Good Friday service begins on April 14. Please sign up for 1-hour time slots to Watch and Pray with Jesus.
