Page 3 Clergy Corner If you have ever worshipped at St. John for a Christmas Vigil Mass, you have obviously been a part of a rather large overflow congregation. We, of course, are delighted to have such a large attendance to celebrate this beautiful feast, but the overcrowding can be such a distraction that it becomes difficult to properly celebrate what should be a gorgeous Liturgy. So we have decided to continue this year what was begun in 2014 as an experiment for our first Vigil Mass. As done previously, our First Vigil Mass will be held in the church building at 4:00 p.m. Then, Fr. Tony Russo will begin yet another Mass in the parish Activity Center for 4:15 p.m. The 15 minute time differential should allow the overflow victims and parking place seekers to move from the church to the center. In addition to the dual 4:00 and 4:15 Vigils, our St. John Christmas Mass schedule will be the same as most other years: 6:30 p.m. Vigil, 12:00 Midnight and then and 9:30 a.m. on Christmas Day itself. Obviously, we expect both the 4:00 and 4:15 Vigils to be extremely crowded. We urge you, if at all possible to attend one of the other ceremonies, especially the lightly-attended Midnight Mass. I realize the dual Vigil Masses will require a great deal of preliminary preparation by our staff and Liturgical Ministers. But then, other than Easter and Pentecost, what better feasts do we have to celebrate besides Christmas? It is true that the crowds and the rush of this season can present major distractions, not just for Christmas Mass, but within our daily lives as well. In fact, this Christmas season is probably symptomatic of our lives. We can allow ourselves to overlook God s presence due to the responsibilities and burdens that can so easily preoccupy us. Or we can see these same people and events as the very means by which the divine Son of God seeks to enter ever more fully into our lives. The feast of Christmas provides us with an opportunity to choose this latter option. Our next ladies retreat will not be held until this summer, but our next men s retreat will be offered from Thursday evening, February 7th until 11:30 Mass on Sunday, February 10th. We encourage you to join us for what we found to be a wonderful experience. Registration forms can be found on page 6 of this bulletin, obtained from the usher s counter at the entrance of church, from the church office or by calling Deacon Randy at 673-8307. The application fee of $75.00 is due upon registration and the total fee for the weekend is $250.00. Financial difficulty should not prevent you from making the retreat. So many of us are still uplifted and motivated by our original ACTS retreat. We wish the same for you.
