KNOLLWOOD AT WORSHIP GATHERING FOR WORSHIP Please silence all electronic devices. Thank you! THE CHIMES Three chimes are sounded, awakening us to the presence of God, alerting us to the voice of Christ, centering us in the embrace of the Spirit. As we gather, we present ourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is our spiritual worship. THE OPENING SENTENCE... Josh Godwin One: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. THE PRELUDE Procession from The Kandinsky Suite... Dan Knight Dan Knight, piano THE CALL TO WORSHIP... Josh Godwin One: We arrive at the first Sunday in Lent. All: We begin our journey together. One: Our own temptations will come, All: But we are promised that the Lord is our refuge. One: Together we worship. All: Together we feel the nearness of Your word and Spirit. One: We can proclaim together, All: Jesus is Lord! ~John Roach THE CHORAL INTROIT Savior, Source of Every Blessing... W.A. Mozart, arr. Jack Schrader The Men s Choir; Charlotte Brown, piano Savior, source of every blessing, tune my heart to grateful lays. Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for ceaseless songs of praise. Josh Godwin *THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN OF PRAISE, NO. 29 O Worship the King... LYONS CONFESSING OUR NEED FOR FORGIVENESS THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)... Most of us don t really want to give up anything. * Those who are able will stand. Ushers will seat those waiting. Hearing aids and large print hymns are available from the ushers. 2
Letting go is not even part of our tradition. We would rather not have our time in the desert with attractive temptations. Yet a journey into the desert is necessary. When we try again to avoid the Lenten journey, remind us of the promise of your word. Always be near us in our hearts. ~John Roach THE SILENT CONFESSION THE ASSURANCE OF PARDON LISTENING FOR GOD S WORD THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Psalm 91:1-2, 9-14... THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE... Diane Lipsett THE ANTHEM On Eagle s Wings... Michael Joncas, arr. Douglas E. Wagner The Men s Choir And he will raise you up on eagle s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, Make you to shine like the sun and hold you in the palm of his hand. You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord, who abide in his shadow for life, Say to the Lord, My refuge, my Rock in whom I trust! The snare of the fowler will never capture you, and famine will bring you no fear; Under his wings your refuge, his faithfulness your shield. You need not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day; Though thousands fall about you, near you it shall not come. For to his angels he s given a command to guard you in all of your ways; Upon their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone. THE SERMON... ABOUT OUR BANNERS According to the Gospels, Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness of Judea wrestling with the kind of Messiah he would be. There, Jesus renounced the seductions of power, success, and status to follow in the way of suffering love. He must have realized early on, that his path would lead to a confrontation with the civil and religious authorities. Nonetheless, Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem (Luke 9:51), even if that meant--as ultimately it did--he would face death on a cross. The banners portray Jesus in the wilderness, contemplating the road ahead. They will remain up throughout Lent, a 40-day period of preparation for the celebration of Easter. The artist is Knollwood s own Bambi Setzer. FOR THE CHILDREN Worship Care is provided for children, infant - kindergarten aged on the first floor of Bldg. B. Children s Worship meets on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays of the month for 1st through 3rd graders. During the second hymn, children meet their leaders in the narthex to walk to B244, where their parents will pick up their children after the service. For the 2nd and 4th Sundays children are invited to enjoy the worship service with their families. Children s activity bulletins and crayons are available in the narthex. 5
