Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel - St. Thomas More December 4 th, 2016 Second day of Advent The voice of John the Baptist begins to be heard with the Second day of Advent. Similar in fervor to the great prophet Isaiah seven hundred years before him, John the Baptist awakens in the Jewish people a sense of God s impending coming into the world. The first reading opens with the phrase, a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse. The image of a tree stump is quite powerful. In chapter 10, Isaiah uses the shocking image of the majestic Lebanese cedar being leveled in an armed conflict between God and Assyrian soldiers. When chapters 10 and 11 of Isaiah are read back-to-back, the opening words to today s reading of a shoot sprouting from a stump are understood much like the smoke rising from the ashes. Through this child, the root of Jesse, a new era of unprecedented peace in nature and among all nations would be realized through God s coming into the world. Matthew summarizes the core of John s message: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand! Matthew uses the Greek word metanoia here, commonly translated as repent. More precisely, it literally means change of heart and mind. John challenged his fellow Israelites to think and believe in a new way that would lead to a total conversion. His urgency stems from his firm conviction in the imminent arrival of the kingdom of heaven, an alternative to the more common kingdom of God heard in the other New Testament Gospels. Matthew was likely responding here to his largely Jewish audience who, out of reverence for the name God, would prefer the kingdom of heaven language. John s belief that the kingdom of heaven was at hand stems from his eschatological (end-time) view of the world. John and his followers embraced an imminent messianic visitation, insisting that all of Israel repent for the forgiveness of sins in the hope that God would soon act decisively in Israel s history. Matthew certainly believed that Jesus shared this same worldview, since Jesus first words in the Gospel of Matthew are identical to John s: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (Mt 4:17b). For both John and Jesus, the best way to prepare for the coming of the Lord was to begin with repentance from all that turns us away from God. Adapted from Liturgical Publications Inc, Connect!
