THE DAILY LESSON is an activity of the study group found at: www.iwso.org The subject for our current study is the entire book The Thunder of Silence By Joel S Goldsmith The Daily Lesson is a progression of excerpts from tapes recorded by Joel, or from his books or writings. It appears here and in email format each day, together with the addition of corroborating scripture and inspired comments by the Practitioner and Teacher ~Al Denninger, to take into meditation and live with throughout your day. Students note: There are words that are capitalized throughout this work. These words are used as if they are a synonym for, or as an activity of God. The portions that are italicized are spontaneous meditations. The Daily Lesson October 2, 2016 CHAPTER XIII THE FATHER WHICH SEETH IN SECRET And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. MATTHEW 6:5, 6 These words of the Master must come as a shock to us when we realize how many people believe that their most effective prayers are those said in church. How many times have we, ourselves, prayed in public, forgetting that, according to Jesus, prayer must be practiced in secret. Of old, the Pharisees and the scribes prayed in public in much the same manner as do most of the people of our world today, and for their much praying, they received the praise of their neighbors: There is only one thing they lost God's grace. ~Joel S Goldsmith Ps 91:1 (KJV) 1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. To quietly Dwell in the Fathers Presence is the open reward. ~Al Denninger

The Daily Lesson October 3, 2016 When our prayers become a matter of public utterance, we are inflating our ego, trying to make something of ourselves, setting out to glorify ourselves, not realizing that thereby we sacrifice the reward of the Father and separate ourselves from the very blessings we are seeking. Anything that glorifies ourselves or attempts to make the world believe that we are something of ourselves tends to separate us from the love of God. The whole teaching of the Master is, I can of mine self do nothing... the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.... My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. ~Joel S Goldsmith Matt 18:1-4 (KJV) 1 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? 2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, 3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Be still, and open an attitude of- Speak Lord, thy servant heareth. Be satisfied to rest in His Omniscience. ~Al Denninger

The Daily Lesson October 4, 2016 This injunction to pray in secret does not mean that we cannot unite with others in prayer or meet in church or temple for the purpose of prayer because Jesus also taught that where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. His intent was that we should not attend church because it is the accepted thing to do fashionable or politic or because our neighbors would gossip about us if we were not there. Our reason for going to church should be because of a desire to unite in a holy atmosphere in silent and secret prayer with other devoted followers of the spiritual way of life for the purpose of being in communion with God, in order that we may receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost. ~Joel S Goldsmith Ps 133:1 (KJV) 1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! Dear Brothers and Sisters, Thank you so much for the dedication that each of you bring to our evening meditations as we gather together Within in silence and in Oneness. These two hours each day are my church, our church. There is no distance between us in the high altitude of Awareness. The Father Within is the fabric of Truth and Love that binds us together in Conscious Unity. I never feel alone during these hours always Loved, always Lifted. Immanuel. Thank you Father for the Holy atmosphere that you provide and for the unconditional Love and Grace You Are. We, your individual Expressions gathered here, are bound in Heaven - Spirit to Spirit and Soul to Soul, ~al.within

The Daily Lesson October 5, 2016 Jesus also reminds us not to pray in holy mountains, nor yet in that Temple in Jerusalem, again meaning that we are not to expect any greater realization of the Presence in holy mountains or in temples than we would find if we were praying in our garden or at home or in our living room, because the kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, Lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within us. The only way we can pray without ceasing is to pray wherever we are in the home, on the street, in the air, under the water, in church or out. ~Joel S Goldsmith Isa 26:3 (to :) (KJV) 3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: Jesus tells us that The Kingdom is within us It shouldn t be too far away then, or too hard to find. Our opportunities to Practice are boundless. ~Al Denninger

The Daily Lesson October 6, 2016 Prayer itself should never be a public display, nor for the purpose of being heard or seen of men. Prayer is a secret and a sacred experience, and, therefore, it must take place within the realm of our own consciousness, and then the Father that seeth in secret will reward us openly. It is only after we begin the practice of secret prayer that we learn the efficacy of true prayer and begin to observe the changes that take place in our lives when we have periods every day for retiring to some quiet place where we can enter into a peaceful Silence, and there in secrecy commune with God. The Master taught that our prayers must be addressed to the Father that is within us, and there is no way to reach that center where God is except when we are quiet, peaceful, and serene within. So it becomes necessary to go into the closet, close the door of the sanctuary, and shut out the sounds and sights of the senses that we may touch that Center. Every thought that takes place within our consciousness reaches the throne of God and returns to us. It does not have to be seen or heard. There is only one way in which it can be measured it must be sacred and unselfish: Right here within my own being is the Father, and this Father knows what thoughts I have; this Father knows the meditations of my heart; this Father knows whether I act from a standpoint of purity or from seif-interest and hypocrisy. ~Joel S Goldsmith Matt 6:5-8 (KJV) 5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. 7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. I can of mine own self do nothing, the Spirit Within doeth the work. There is nothing I want Father, just to Be with You ~al.within

The Daily Lesson October 7, 2016 Within us are the issues of life, and they are decided there. Within us is the entire kingdom of God. That means that within us is the entire kingdom of immortality, eternality, virtue, prosperity, harmony, health, wholeness, completeness, and fulfillment. In our human selfhood, we can never bring that forth because as a human being we are living in terms of effect and not cause, but when a human being learns to make contact with his Source, he is then drawing on the Invisible and is back in Eden. ~Joel S Goldsmith I Cor 2:9-12 (KJV) 9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. So then, here is our work today: Learn to lessen the distraction of the shadows of effect and heighten our relationship with the Source of Being. In other words, Be still and listen. ~Al Denninger

The Daily Lesson October 8, 2016 Only by abiding in the inner sanctuary can the return to the Father's house be accomplished, because in meditation the ego or personal sense of I that Adam who lives by the sweat of his brow is still. It is not claiming power, understanding, or wisdom. On the contrary, it is taking an attitude of humility, as if to say, I am insufficient, incomplete, inharmonious; and so now I turn to the Source of my being, to That which is greater than I. By our stillness, we indicate our humility. ~Joel S Goldsmith II Cor 3:5 (KJV) 5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; I surrender Father. I await Your direction for every step. That does not mean that I sit here stagnating it means I am in a constant listening movement upward in Your Infinite Way. ~al.within

The Daily Lesson October 9, 2016 Customary prayer makes one superior to God because it tells God what it wants and usually when it wants it. It sets up the ego because it dares to try to influence God in one's behalf or in behalf of another. But in the silence of meditation, the prayer is: I do not ask You to serve my purpose, to do my will or my wish or my bidding. I am Your servant do what You will with me. Teach me, feed me, direct me. You are closer to me than breathing. You know my needs, and it is Your good pleasure to give me the kingdom. Therefore I wait upon You. ~Joel S Goldsmith Matt 6:10 Thy will (KJV) 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. In order for the ego to be unemployed we have to fire it. Then STOP and listen for the Father to direct, supply and comfort his offspring. There is no desire or lack in the Kingdom of God. All that the Father has is thine. Speak Lord, thy servant heareth. ~al.within

The Daily Lesson October 10, 2016 In this waiting, a vacuum is created, and the ego is in abeyance. The personal sense of self with its desires, wishes, hopes, and ambitions fades away, and then there is room for that transcendental spark to be kindled. There must be humility, before the Spirit of the Lord can be upon us. So it is that when we pray in secret, realizing our oneness with the Father and that, because of that oneness, all that the Father has is ours by divine inheritance and, therefore, it is our Father's good pleasure to give us the kingdom, we then need no longer look to any man for reward, compensation, gratitude, co-operation, or affection. When we understand our relationship with the Father, we learn to mold every thought and deed in accordance with His will. ~Joel S Goldsmith Matt 5:5,6 (KJV) 5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Submit your self to God. Empty out the noise and cluttered thoughts, so to be filled with Righteous understanding, that we may learn to pray aright without ceasing. I give my life to you Father. Not for any reason. Not with any expectations or desires. Just to Be with You. Loving You Feeling Your Love ~al.within

The Daily Lesson October 11, 2016 The nature and purpose of secret prayer is little understood in the religious life of men and women today. Secrecy, however, is as potent as silence. Actually, it is the key to spiritual success, and without secrecy, spiritual demonstration is impossible. ~Joel S Goldsmith Matt 6:18 (KJV) 18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. Ps 91:1,2 (KJV) 1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Our relationship with God is Spirit to Spirit, Soul to Soul. We must be willing to secretly and silently transcend this reasoning world consciousness and open out a Way for the imprisoned splendor to escape. ~Al Denninger

The Daily Lesson October 12, 2016 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. MATTHEW 6:1, 2 Is not that a plain enough statement? And yet how many people in the world do their charity before men, have their generosity published in the newspapers, on the church bulletin board, or somewhere else where some neighbor, fellow citizen, or business associate needing to be impressed can see and tell them and others of their nobility and great contribution to the community, and possibly add what good Christians they are. But Jesus said of this practice, Ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. MATTHEW 6:3, 4 ~Joel S Goldsmith God s Love is unconditional, so being God s instrument should not be any different. Unconditional means without conditions - no expectations, no rewards, no limits and no explainations... The answer is simple: God is Love - Be Love Loving. ~Al Denninger

The Daily Lesson October 13, 2016 The Father within us is our very own Soul, and anything that we do, our Soul knows; and if we do it in silence and in secrecy, He knows how to reward us openly. But when we do anything of a good nature and do it openly, there is first of all the implication that we are doing it, which is not true since God is the author of all good works and we are at best instruments or transparencies through which God's grace is appearing. Moreover, subconsciously we want others to be aware of our good works and to praise, admire, or thank us for our generosity and philanthropy as if we of ourselves were good. ~Joel S Goldsmith Luke 17:21 (KJV) 21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you. John 14:10 (KJV) 10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Matt 6:6 and thy (KJV) 6 and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. Today is the day the Lord hath made and I live in it. I live not I Christ liveth within Me Seeing the Father Work is my open reward. ~Al Denninger

The Daily Lesson October 14, 2016 When, however, we do our alms secretly, the personal sense of self is entirely absent, and God alone witnesses our good works. Any act of good performed secretly and sacredly attests to the absence of personal sense and the presence of God. Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. MATTHEW 6:16 18 ~Joel S Goldsmith My alms. My good. My works. My acts. My supply. My health. My meditation. Who s really? Gods impersonal Omnipresent Life. ~Al Denninger

The Daily Lesson October 15, 2016 Let us not wear our spiritual heart on our sleeve: Let us not boast to men that we have found the secret of communion with the Source of life. Let us not expose our spiritual pearls to those unprepared to receive them, for in so doing they may be lost or trampled upon. Let our light shine by its fruitage rather than be flaunted before men and obscured by a veil of words. ~Joel S Goldsmith Matt 7:6 (to 3rd,) (KJV) 6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, Matt 7:20 (KJV) 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Let God direct your Life and Work. A beacon of Truth can never be obscured. ~Al Denninger

The Daily Lesson October 16, 2016 It is not selfish to keep our relationship with God secret, because our light will shine to those prepared to see light, our wisdom will be heard by those who have ears to hear even that which is imparted without words or thoughts. ~Joel S Goldsmith II Cor 4:6,7 (KJV) 6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. Luke 12:37 (to :) (KJV) 37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: The Light that is found shining through us is His. Selfless, unconditional Love beaming because it Loves to. Soul to Soul, Spirit to Spirit. ~Al Denninger

The Daily Lesson October 17, 2016 The spiritual fast is an inward communing with God while abstaining from words or thoughts. It is an abiding in God unobserved by those around us. It is prayer in its highest sense in that it is a refraining from seeking anything of God, yet it is an awareness of God's grace freely flowing. ~Joel S Goldsmith John 15:4 (to.) (KJV) 4 Abide in me, and I in you. Is there anything else? Be still. There is no effort required just surrender and acceptance that I Am within you Illuminating your Way. ~Al Denninger

The Daily Lesson October 18, 2016 A teaching on such a high level of consciousness can never be understood by the human reasoning mind and, therefore, can be obeyed only by those whose goal is spiritual realization. How seldom are these esoteric teachings of Jesus on secrecy openly taught! How seldom is it recognized that there is a spiritual center in every person which is referred to in such revelations as, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine, or I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee, or I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. ~Joel S Goldsmith I Cor 2:9-14 (KJV) 9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. Thank you Father, for shining Your Light through great masters like Jesus and Paul, and through teachers like Joel to me, that I may Know Thee aright. Watching the Truth as it Flows through the millennium is a clear and Present example of your Infinite Way of Be-ing. Thou art Ever with us finding new Instruments to Beam Your Light, feel Your Love and demonstrate Liberty, Peace and Fulfilment. ~al.within

The Daily Lesson October 19, 2016 How many of us understand the mystery of these teachings? How many of us know that the I is literally in the midst of us and that that I that seeth in secret rewardeth us openly? By contemplation and meditation, we must solve the mystery of the spiritual life, and this we can do only when secretly and sacredly contemplating the nature of the Infinite Invisible which is closer to us than breathing. We must never believe that the mysteries of God will be revealed to us in the midst of the noise and clamor of discussion, argument, or theorizing. The hidden mysteries are not hidden from those who understand and obey the teaching of the Sermon on the Mount. ~Joel S Goldsmith Luke 17:21 (KJV) 21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you. Matt 6:6 (KJV) 6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. Ye have heard it said of old, You can find the answer to anything you want written out in the Bible. But I say unto you, Study deeply the Sermon on the Mount. Be still and look within the letter of the Word to the activity of Spirit that wrote it down from an Actual Experience. There you will find the Secret to a Spiritual Life beaming out from within You. ~Al Denninger This concludes Chapter 13 of The Thunder of Silence, by Joel S Goldsmith. Tomorrow we begin Chapter 14, entitled When Ye Pray.
