EVERY SPIRITUAL BLESSING Ephesians 1:1-14 wednesday 1 aug You have every spiritual blessing in Christ. You have wisdom, peace, joy and transforming power. It is yours, not because you earned it, but because Jesus earned it for you. All you need to do is connect with God and it will download into your heart. I use a very big Bible software program for my research which is web-based. When I purchase an upgrade it downloads onto all my computers. But sometimes there is a lag between when I purchase the software upgrade and when it actually upgrades the program on my hard drive. It only downloads onto each computer when it is logged on to the internet. Sometimes I take my laptop away on the plane expecting to work with the new software only to realise that I had forgotten to connect to the internet long enough to allow the software to download. This is how it is for us with the spiritual blessings that God wants to give us. They are all ours but we have to give ourselves plenty of download time. We can operate in the peace, confidence and power of the Holy Spirit but we are often too quick to run ahead in life operating with the old software, that is, the old mindsets and desires. God wants to give you a new heart and put a new Spirit in you. This is what Paul is talking about here. It is yours in Christ. You just need to log-on to receive it. Read Ephesians 1:1-14 Spend some time seeking God. Ask Him to fill you with His Spirit.

thursday 2 aug PREDESTINATION Ephesians 1:1-14 We are always in a position of response to God. This is one of the most important theological truths. It is a vital perspective lest we be constantly doing things to try to evoke a response from God. Everything we do is in response to what God has initiated in us. This is underlined by Paul here when he tells us that even before the creation of the world God predestined us to walk the path we are now walking. Such an idea is a real mind twister and has vexed many people who have tried to fit this into a neat theological system. Many people have even rejected the idea because it causes too many logical paradoxes. But God transcends space and time and therefore His ways will not always seem rationally coherent. This doesn t mean that God s ways are irrational. No, it is entirely rational that the God who is beyond space and time will not always seem to obey the laws of logic. The Christian Philosopher Blaise Pascal said: Reason s last step is the recognition that there are an infinite number of things which are beyond it. So reason demands, when we are speaking about God, that we not put logical limits on what He can do. We are indeed responsible for the choices we make. If we don t choose God then we will miss His blessings. However, we are also told that we only choose Him because He first revealed Himself to us. It is a truth that is revealed in order to put us in our place, the most wonderful place to be: in the position of response. Read Ephesians 1:1-14 again and reflect on Acts 13:48 What is God doing and saying to you now and how do you need to respond to Him?

PAUL S PRAYER Ephesians 1:15-23 friday 3 aug I love the prayers of Paul because they show me what is on offer from God. I was sitting in a restaurant the other day wondering what to order when I heard someone next to me asking for a dish that sounded delicious that I didn t even see on the menu. This is what Paul s prayers are like. They are the prayers of a man who tasted all the best on the menu and is ordering the best dishes for his people. When I read this prayer in Ephesians 1:15-23 I think to myself, Wow, that sounds amazing, I ll have one of those too! Do you feel like you could do with some wisdom and revelation from God? What about having the eyes of your heart enlightened so that you will gain a view that will put everything in its right perspective? I could do with that kind of clarity when my mind gets clouded with dysfunctional thoughts and unwarranted fears and concerns. Do you feel like you need to get connected with the power of God for breakthrough in those areas of your life that are stagnant and broken? That resurrection power is your inheritance in Christ and Paul reminds us that it is there for us if we will see it. And his prayer is that our eyes will be opened so that we can operate, not in despair and hopelessness, but in hope and confidence. I could do with that, what about you? Read Ephesians 1:15-23 Pray this prayer for yourself and for others who need the same things.

4/5 aug Anaesthetics - Psalm 42 I am convinced that the worst thing that could ever happen to me is that I end up being happy without God. If I have strayed away from God I want my heart to feel the cold emptiness of what is lacking. I want, in other words, to be sensitive to reality. I don t want my soul drugged by synthetic replacements for God. I don t want spiritual anaesthetics to dull my awareness of reality. It s strange, but I always know when my heart has become dull to reality. I know what it feels like to sense clearly. I know the joy of rising above the cloud level to see things in the stark light of God s presence. Even when I see terrible truths about myself, as I inevitably do, there is a sweetness to the truth (cf. Ezekiel 3:3) because in seeing this I find myself in agreement with God and am then positioned to be able to receive His love and forgiveness. Yes, I know this joy and I can never forget it. And I know when I have lost it; when the world becomes hazy again; when I descend again into the dark cloud of self-administered anaesthesia. Let yourself feel empty if you are empty. Let yourself feel the sadness of your spiritual loneliness if you have departed God s side. Pray that this sadness smashes through the veneer of false joy. For this sadness will lead you back to God. The Psalmist moves from the emptiness of his soul to God. His sadness drives him to seek. Hope is reaching out of darkness and alienation towards God. God is there to be found by those who seek Him. Read Psalm 42. Ask God to attune your heart to reality.

ALL OF GOD Ephesians 2:1-10 monday 6 aug The upshot of the truth about our predestination that Paul addresses in Ephesians 1 is that God is always the initiator and we are always in the position of response. That is why this truth is so important and why we dare not try to interpret it down so that it makes more sense to us. The reason why you are a Christian is because God chose you. It wasn t at your initiation that you were saved but at God s initiation. It is for us now to respond to what He has done. The first response to this truth should not be to try and figure out how this coheres logically with the issue of human choice and free will. As I said previously, it doesn t need to be logical. The right response is to praise and thank God for saving you when you couldn t save yourself. As Paul says here in Ephesians 2, you were dead and God made you alive. Dead people do not choose to be raised up; they cannot choose to be raised up precisely because they are dead. Paul doesn t say that we were unwell in our transgressions and were raised up after we called on Him in faith. No, he says that we were dead and that God made us alive and even gave us the faith with which we then reached out to God. Paul s point in sharing this mind-twisting truth is to nail down the idea that salvation is all of God and not earned or warranted by us in any way. It is all by grace. Read Ephesians 2:1-10 It is all thanks to God that we are saved so let s offer up that thanks.

tuesday 7 aug PREPARED IN ADVANCE Ephesians 2:1-10 The perspective of predestination, as paradoxical as it is, is a wonderful perspective because it means that we are stepping into a life that has been worked out beforehand. It means that today you don t need to make life happen. You don t need to cut a way through the jungle of life; the path has already been cut for you. The works that God has called you to do have been prepared beforehand. In fact, you were created with exactly the right attributes and abilities to do the very works God has prepared for you to do and even now, if you connect with God, He will equip you with the strength and wisdom to do what He has foreordained for you to do. There is nothing to achieve in the Kingdom of God. All we have to do is step into the works of God. God is doing things in people s lives today and He has prepared them and you for a moment of divine encounter. You will encounter the providence and sovereignty of God as you step into these works and they will encounter the love and grace of God in you. The path is laid out; you just need to be intentional about walking in it. You can go to the same places and do the same things with any number of different agendas. But if you choose today to serve God wherever you go and in whatever it is that you do, and if you remain alert to what God is doing, then you will walk into the works of God today. That s what I call living! Read Ephesians 2:1-10 again Commit yourself to God and ask Him to lead you into His works today.
