To All... many thanks for making my year an enjoyable one! WELCOME NEW MEMBERS In May, we had one (1) addition to our District Membership and that was the return of Bud Darough, to the Nelson Club... Welcome Back Bud! New Members are vital to our Association s existence, so I am delighted to report that there were 18 New or Returning Members who joined District VIII, this past year. So, congratulations to: Edmonton (5); Sherwood Park (4); Stampede City (4); Nelson (3); Regina (1) and Wallace (1). Unfortunately, due to attrition we had a net loss of 20 members; so, please keep those new members coming in! DISTRICT VIII ANNUAL CONVENTION For those who were unable to attend this year s District Convention, in Nelson, B.C. from June 7 10, 2018, there 128 Registered Delegates and for the Governor s Banquet there were 135 in attendance! Special thanks to our out of District attendees: Chris & Judy Randall (Victoria); Roger Lindley (Blacklake, CA); Henry & Nora Berumen, Larry & Alice Duba, and Lowell & Sharon Gist (Fresno). The Bocce and Golf Award Presentations: Page 5 Men s Low Gross: Mike Wagg Men s Low Net: Steve Marshall Bocce Winners: Laura Young, John Hodgson, Jim Malott & Dale Woodroffe Ladies Low Gross: Betty Fenton Ladies Low Net: Laura Young Saturday, Business Meeting: Call to Order was at 0900, and Secretary-Treasurer Michael Matei did the Roll Call and established that we had Quorum; with 10 of our 11 Clubs present; so, we got off to a great start. ( : International President Dale Woodroffe gave Greetings and a brief report of what has been going on within International this past year. District Officer Reports were then given, followed by Club Delegate Reports. A Curl-A-Rama Report was given by IPG John Hodgson. Then, Michael Matei presented the District Financial Statements, and advised that District had a $35 surplus, versus a $2,663 budgeted deficit. Bruce Swanson Edmonton Club gave his presentation for the 2019 Convention, in Drumheller, and there was considerable interest, so it looks like it will be well attended; book your room early! Next up was Lt. Governor Larry Fenton who presented his 2018/19 Budget; and that was quickly approved. IPG John Hodgson then gave his Nominations and that too was quickly approved (Phew). Last but not least, the District Awards were presented: Bulletin Award Man Mile Award Membership Award Calgary Bruce Martin accepting Stampede City Jim Barrette accepting Edmonton David Winfield Accepting I must admit, my frequent reference to having a Sgt. @ Arms who would be assessing fines of $1 - $5 did allow the meeting to run smoothly. Still, if there had been a Sgt. @ Arms we probably would have collected $200+. ( :
Ladies Luncheon: Page 6 While I do not have any pictures showing that I was actually there, I was and had the opportunity to thank the Gyrettes and Gyro Spouses for all that they do to support Gyro; to acknowledge the recent 70 th Anniversary of the Calgary Gyrette Club and to encourage other Gyrette Clubs to let the Governor know when they have Special Anniversaries, etc.; and, then I introduced Larry Fenton as the Incoming Governor and Derm Jackman as the Incoming Lt. Governor Derm Jackman Secretary/Treasure Dave Jenner All in all, it was a great Convention, with great memories, renewed and new friendships; soooo, Kudos to the Nelson Club for a well-organized; well run; and very successful District Convention. It is not an easy task to have everything run smoothly; to have great meals; to have great entertainment; and to have everyone enjoy themselves, but, the Gyros and Spouses, of the Gyro Club of Nelson, DID IT! Special thanks to Convention Chair Ray Ballan, Co-chair Joe Vingo, and everyone on your Committee for a job well done! Everyone s attention to details allowed me, as Governor, to enjoy myself.
