June 25, 2017 First Presbyterian Church The Third Sunday of Pentecost Glorify. Grow. Mission Statement: We, as the Church, are the Body of Christ equipped through prayer by the Holy Spirit to glorify God; through passionate worship, nurturing fellowship, sacrificial service, respectful evangelism, and active discipleship, we encourage and challenge all ages of our congregation and community to grow in relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Ask an usher for a large print bulletin, Bible, or hearing enhancement device. Prayer cards, visitor information cards, and offering envelopes can be found in the pews. Please place them in the offering plate. Preaching: Rev. Chris Campbell 8:30 Lay Leader: Brett Shideler 11:00 Lay Leader: Ron MacLeod

The Worship of God 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. Words in bold are spoken by the congregation. Invites all who are able to stand. The flowers are given to the glory of God by Barbara Hughes in honor of the ministers. Gathering Preparation for Worship God sent his Son into this world to redeem us. Jesus Christ purchased our freedom and now we are free to serve God, to have peace, and to live forever with Jesus in God s presence. The Holy Spirit gives us understanding into God s unfailing and everlasting love. Prelude Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven Michael Burkhardt Call to Worship The God of creation makes us one in body! Let us join hearts and hands in praise of the Lord! The God of peace makes us one in the Spirit! Let us join hearts and voices in praise of the Lord! Let us worship God! Hymn 475 Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing Nettleton Prayer of Confession (silently, then said together) Merciful God, you made us in your image, with a mind to know you, a heart to love you, and a will to serve you. But our knowledge is imperfect, our love inconstant, our obedience incomplete. Day by day, we fail to grow into your likeness. In your tender love, forgive us through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen. Assurance of Pardon Friends, believe the good news of the Gospel! In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! The Gloria Patri Greatorex Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Passing the Peace Greet those around you with, The peace of Christ be with you. Hymn 688 Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart Morecambe Stanzas 1, 4, 5 Community Joys and Events 2

Proclaiming Scripture Reading Luke 3:2-3, 8 14 New Testament page 60 Children s Time (11:00) Children (age 3 to fourth grade) are invited to go to Kids For Christ (KFC) in room 216. Anthem (11:00) A Gladsome Hymn of Praise Austin Lovelace Karyn Myers, guest conductor A gladsome hymn of praise we sing, and thankfully we gather To bless the love of God above, our everlasting Father. From shades of night He calls the light, and from the sod the flower; From every cloud His blessings break in sunshine or in shower. Full in His sight His children stand, by His strong arm defended, And He whose wisdom guides the world, our footsteps hath attended. For nothing falls unknown to Him, or care or joy or sorrow, And He whose mercy ruled the past will be our stay tomorrow. Then praise the Lord with one accord, to His great name give glory, And of His never changing love repeat the wondrous story. In Him rejoice with heart and voice whose glory fadeth never, Whose providence is our defense, who lives and loves forever. Scripture Reading Joel 2:12 17, 27 29 Old Testament page 847 The Sermon Joel: Rend Your Hearts, Not Your Clothes Rev. Campbell Responding Pastoral Prayer and the Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Offertory What Then Should We Do Leon Boellmann The Doxology Old Hundredth Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise Him, all creatures here below. Praise Him above ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Affirmation of Faith Heidelberg Confession Q & A 54 What do you believe concerning the holy catholic church? I believe that the Son of God through his Spirit and Word, out of the entire human race, from the beginning of the world to its end, gathers, protects, and preserves for himself a community chosen for eternal life and united in true faith. And of this community I am and always will be a living member. 3

Reinhold Niebuhr: An American Conscience June 18, June 25 and July 2 The Theological Inquiries and Indigators Sunday School Classes will host a three-week series on the life and works of the American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr. The series will be led by Rev. Dr. Larry Thomas in the Fellowship Hall today at 9:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome. M&E FunRai$er Italian Dinner, July 29, 5-8 PM M & E (Your Mission & Evangelism Team) is having an Eyetalian Dinnah (TexMex pronunciation) on Saturday, July 29, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. We are having a 5 Star chef cater this meal. Vito, of Vito s restaurant, will be creating a sumptuous repast to overwhelm your gastronomic senses. We have limited seating, only the first 200 can be seated. Tickets will be available outside the Chapel and in the Narthex. Tickets will be on sale for the ridiculously low price of $10 for adults (or kids eating Italian food) and $2 for kids. The kids will have the one option of hot dogs, drinks and a movie elsewhere in the building. Think of that, a certified baby/youth sitter for $2. You and your wife can escape the kids for 2-1/2 hours for less than $1 per hour per kid. Your M&E team is great, ain t it. If you want to escape your significant other for 2 hours, your spouse could attend the movie. Of course, if you leave your spouse to watch the movie, it might cost you a bundle, since there will be a silent auction with items to rival the Neiman-Marcus Christmas book. For dessert, we will have a bake sale with lots of scrumptious items prepared by members of the congregation. Finally, we will have entertainment in the Fellowship Hall while you enjoy your dinner and bake sale items. All the money raised through this event will be used to support mission and evangelism activities such as helping to prepare backpacks of school supplies for Carter students, other Carter needs, supporting fix-it projects for people needing assistance, local mission activities, supporting missionaries abroad, and other requests for support that arise during the year. More news to follow in upcoming weeks about this extravaganza.
